Spyware... one more reason
to use giFT.

Re:Command line
giFT, I think. Consists of a server (can connect to OpenFT, Gnutella, Fasttrack, Soulseek, etc, at varying success rate) that does the downloading, and a client that can be on remote host as well if desired. The best client for it just happens to be giFTcurs, a console app...

Re:Is FastTrack network same as the old Linux KaZa
The old kza will not work because it does not have the new encryption layers. Instead you can use giFT, giFT-FastTrack and giFTcurs.
It looks alot better than kza and it's guaranteed to be free of spyware (it's free software). It's all in Debian, except for gift-fasttrack which you can get here:
deb ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/gift-fasttrack unstable main -
Easy, first..
Download giFT, then setup OpenFT in LAN mode. Then all your content management problems will be gone.

Re:mutella
Yeah, I was one. Not anymore, since I've learned the existence of giFT I'm not using it anymore.
giFT works with a small server, which clients can connect. So I can control it graphically on my home (using giFToxic) or remotely (using ssh and giFTcurs).
Also, giFT turns all that reseach into garbage, since it can connect on several servers of several different types. Tt currently comes with OpenFT (giFT original protocol) and Gnutella by default but you can also find FastTrack network plugin for it. There is also a OpenNap network plugin in the works (and I just can't wait to put my hands on it). -
important to support giFTproject
*sigh* ... I've tried to submit giFT related stories several times and gotten rejected all the time. Seems almost as if /. editors would rather have stories about bitching over KaZaA/Morpheus than helping make an important alternative project more well known and supported. The result of this can clearly be seen in this answer to your post further down.If you are tired of bitching and want to do something about it then get invovlved.
Cheers...

WHAT ABOUT giFT PROJECT!?!?
You stupidass rejecting editors!!!
They need HELP NOW!

About spywareAs you and others have said KaZaA does include spyware. In older versions it was optionable, but in the latest so called "security fix" it's mandatory.
However. There are alternatives and one of the less known ones is Grokster. This is also an official client to the fasttrack network and it does also include spyware but you can disable it. Actually it's disabled by default! I've been using it and when I've checked with AdAware it's green. So go get it!
Meanwhile. What happened to giFT/OpenFT?? I'm still waiting..

giFT was that software
There is morpheus compatible software, called giFT. It worked up until MusicCity deliberatly changed the protocol and broke the free libraries that worked with it.
see here for more along with a plotted history of how they reverse engineered it, and how their work was broken.

Re:Hmmm
giFT (http://www.giftproject.org/) is working on an open source implementation. Details will come soon (and everyone is welcome to help!)
