Re:They are?
They also can regenerate their heart if it is damaged or a piece is taken off (I'm not sure how they discovered this) but scientists are trying to figure out what implications this could have for vertebrate regeneration. http://www.gofish.com/player.gfp?gfid=30-1193095

There are tons of smaller sites that are a hellofa lot more firendly. My favorite so far is Go Fish.

Beyond You Tube: Go FishYou tube does tap into the "AFHV" vein. Go fish is tapping into a much more interesting conceptual space, where they ar edeveloping online Reality TV. Right now they have a thing called America's Dream Date. People are sending in videos to contend for the prize of going to Paris for a week.
Most of the videos suck. Most of them are
"Hi! My name is Bennifer and I have a great sense of humor, and like to have fun."
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Z ZBut some are really amazing.
One woman talks about how a guy stole her suitcase, but it had a dead dog in it...
One guy is an elvis impersonator and a total nut.
There's a woman who is either the greatest actress I've ever seen, or, she has the WORST sense of self worth ever witnessed outside of a suicide hotline.
The range of other videos is much like YouTube, but this reality TV angle is really pretty interesting and innovative.
check it out.

no - I don't work there or hav stock in it - I just think it's weird.

Splash splash
So, I am biased because I have a friend who works here, but check out gofish (ick, flash 9... oh well).
Basically, it's the only immitator that I am aware of that is actually trying to go out and do "directed" content. Like, not just a bunch of people getting drunk and filming themselves laughing at thier own idiocy, but actually saying "hey people, we're gonna have a contest so, make a video about.... THIS".
Not that I don't like the mindlessness you can see on youtube, of course. Sometimes that's fun, and necessary, but I like the idea of taking this huge pool of wasted potential and pointing it in a direction. I'm hoping someday they start going beyond the braindead dating meme and start filming political/satire themes, but that's just my own personal interest. -
But how to make money....
The real challenge here is that Youtube relying on copyrighted content to get all the click-thru's from SE's prevents it from establishing any meaningful ad revenues.... One competitor who has seemingly figured out a way around this is http://www.gofish.com/ , in addition to the normal video sharing application they launched a reality-TV like show where they are directing the user-base to submit specific types of videos to compete, thereby eliminating the copyright and Adult issues that plague advertisers..

Google Playing catchup now
We've been doing this for ages at http://www.gofish.com/ We provide the service for a number of big and small search engines. They had to do this to remain competetive in search. To be honest, google releases many services that are derrivative of existing ones -- like google maps or mail. In each of these cases they innovate in improving the service in some way. I am a bit biased here but, I think the real story here is google is now just following the pack. Where are the inovative features? More importantly where is 50 cents audiobook?

Gofish does it better

I didn't -- cough -- work on this or anything. Really. -
The new age of search companies.
What's a lot more interesting is the amount of new search startups. A great deal of these are really just search aggregators, but there are some really innovative new companies coming out of the woodworks. A search engine I've been using recently is http://www.gofish.com/ This is the direction that the small search engines are going, I feel. More paid search results, mixed with digital media purchasing. GoFish.com actually just launched a useful new service which allows you to search for digital media (music and video) then buy an mp3 and download the content, or stream it from their webserver. I'm finding it to be a rather entertaining method to waste my day.
