Re:and what about xerox's stuff?
How about this? Seriously, look at the ratio of searches for HTC, Nokia, Samsung, Blackberry to iphone and then append "cracked screen" onto any of these search terms and you'll see that, though iPhone doesn't necessarily lead in market share anymore, it certainly leads in cracked searches. Are iPhone users naturally clumsier or is the iPhone designed to be fragile?
-
Re:and what about xerox's stuff?
Jobs and Apple are the modern equivalent of Edison and Edison electric, they invent a few things but far more often then steal other people's ideas and perfect them. Nokias had multitasking, youtube videos... in 2006 if not earlier, Velo 1, Palm and similar devices had grid icons, touch screens years earlier. But there is one area where iPhone is far ahead of Android. I hope Apple patented this method of planned obsolescence.

Re:Is this the same source code?
Yes, the ICS tree that will be released to AOSP is the same code used to do the build for Galaxy Nexus (among other products).
Instructions on building for Galaxy Nexus will likely end up here (alongside Nexus S):
http://source.android.com/source/building-devices.htmlThe handful of closed source userspace pieces necessary (some firmware, the hardware opengl libraries, samsung radio library, etc) will end up here:
http://code.google.com/android/nexus/drivers.html
(please disregard the unfortunate use of "drivers" here -- all the kernel drivers are GPLv2, none are closed source)What's not included is the Google Mobile Apps (gmail, gcalendar, gtalk, maps, etc). These are proprietary Google applications, not part of the core Android platform (which consists of the lower level libraries, dalvik vm, framework libraries, services, core apps like phone, contacts, launcher, settings, etc, etc).

Re:Wrong summary
No need to offend me. I migrated as soon as I received the first email, but I didn't know some services wouldn't be available after the migration.
For instance, when I try to access http://plus.google.com/, I get the following message:
"Google+ is not yet available for Google Apps. Learn More.
Thanks for your patience!"
And the "Learn More" links here: http://www.google.com/support/plus/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1407609
So, it's not a problem about me knowing how to use the Internet... it just doesn't support Google Apps... yet.
Of course, I could create a new Gmail address just for it, but it's just lame that I can't use my 12 year old email address for it anymore. -

Sharing Reader items on Google+
This is copied from elsewhere. You can already great a custom 'send to' using the following:
Gear > Reader settings > Send to > Create custom link
Name: Google+
URL: https://plusone.google.com/_/+1/confirm?url=${url}
Icon URL :https://ssl.gstatic.com/s2/oz/images/favicon.icoIt enables you to send things from reader to your stream easily. All this announcement really is, is a formalization of the above 'hack'. This is because buzz is dead and instead of sharing there by default, you will now share to plus.

Removed Reader link from Gmail
This would certainly explain why the Reader link recently disappeared from the Gmail navigation bar. I find it really unfortunate that Google decided to string us along for so long, offering alternatives like "use a bookmark." Google has yet to sell me on +, and I am far from convinced that merging Reader into the fold will do much to change that. The time is fast approaching to move to a new RSS reader.

I started a project that seeks to do something similar. My application is home automation. I'm using an inexpensive android tablet connected directly to an arduino (no ADK needed) to control a light switch and sense the environment. I'm the Project Lead for Growl
Hi, I'm the Project Lead for Growl. I'll be happy to respond to any questions replied to this thread, as long as they are kept nice, courteous, professional, etc.
So a few items I already know are going to be brought up.
1) We've had a large amount of inbound support requests in the last 2 weeks, more than we get in a 6 month period of time usually. http://groups.google.com/group/growldiscuss/about?hl=en_US shows the statistics about just this month alone. Bear in mind this month is not done yet, this is not our only list/group/whatever google wants to call those things. We're also fielding support requests on twitter, and a direct email address (due to popular demand).
2) Source code was planned to be pushed over the wall this weekend. Since this post is up, we're changing our plans and going to work on getting the source up today. We've tried off and on over the last two weeks, but have ran into issues with multiple unclosed heads for instance in the repo, things like that. More technical issues, less issues with regards to actually posting source because we don't want to (we do, just i.e. there are just problems). We have a deadline to meet in order to get the source posted, but we also have people who need 1.3.1 since there are problems in 1.3 (just like in every other software product ever, in every version ever)
3) This guy was banned for only a month because he was responding in a very hostile way. He was told he would be unbanned at that point. However, he seems just like an angry individual in general, and I hope he gets counseling or something in order to help with anger management issues. He was not banned because he forked Growl, I think that's kind of neat actually and the point of being open source. He was being a poisonous person, and was removed as such. I will not discuss this any further, but wanted to address this here.
4) We will be providing source in the form of our chosen vcs. If you do not know how to use a vcs but you work with oss, or want to work with oss, not learning a vcs is doing yourself a disservice. Future employers, or current oss projects, will find your knowing a vcs up front an asset, and we want to promote that. Tarball distributions will be ended as of 1.3.

NO, FUCKTARD, the mortgage mess was caused first and foremost by the securitzation of bad loans, which were MASSIVELY ENCOURAGED by the Republican administration at the time via Bush's Ownership Society. Hell, if you were even being a tiny bit intellectually honest you could bother yourself to google Bush Touts Home Ownership and see the numerous articles of the GOP drooling all over each other about how great fantastic it is that every 'murkin is gonna have a house.
IT WAS THOSE bad loans that collapsed the mortgage industry, moron. PLEASE DO bother your lazy ass to get the facts straight before you just FART OUT some ignorant propaganda that you're rebreathing out of Rush Limbaugh's diseased asshole.

Re:Nice distro but they messed up the desktop
My household runs on Ubuntu 10.04LTS right now. 5 machines of it. I've been running Ubuntu since 7.04. I do NOT upgrade releases with each new release. I go from one LTS to the next after giving the new LTS a period to settle down, usually a few months. 12.04LTS is due soon.
Shuttleworth, owner of Canonical, owner of Ubuntu, seems committed to Unity Desktop from what I have read of his pronouncements. For me, it looks like I have to find a replacement for Ubuntu.
I have had 11.10 running in a virtual machine. I absolutely HATE everything about it. Everything. If I had wanted a hand-held I'd have bought a fscking hand-held device. I do software development and a hand-held UI just does NOT cut it. I hate GNOME3 too. Want to see what other Linux professionals think? Have a look:
ESR's blog article titled "Ubuntu and GNOME jump the shark". He thinks even less of it than I do. His solution is XFCE.
Dave Jones G+. Search the page for "linus torvalds". One of Linus' comments is a scathing assault on Unity and GNOME3. Linus has gone to XFCE. See also the Wikipedia article on Linus Torvalds.
Here's the wrinkle. Since I go from LTS to LTS, if Unity in 12.04 does NOT have an option for a GNOME2 desktop, it will be a long, long time before there's an opportunity for me to switch back to Ubuntu, assuming they come to their senses and give me a GNOME2 UI.
There's good news!!! There are at least 2 forks of GNOME2 now: MATE and BlueBubble:
MATE Desktop Environment. A fork of GNOME2 on GitHub
BlueBubble Desktop. Apparently Fedora basedThere's hope!
I have tried both Lubuntu and Xubuntu in virtual machines. Looks like Xubuntu will do at 12.04LTS unless Ubuntu comes to its senses.

Lies damm lies and Slashdot
Let's start with the lie in the summary.
"Now that ICS is out, though, the source is nowhere in sight. "
ICS isn't out. It has been shown but it is not out.
And we have this statement " - To reiterate, these servers contain only the ‘gingerbread’ and ‘master’
branches from the old AOSP servers. We plan to release the source for the
recently-announced Ice Cream Sandwich soon, once it’s available on devices. "
Source: http://groups.google.com/group/android-building/msg/c73c14f9b0dcd15a?pli=1
In other words this is all click bait and the summary should be appended.
The source will be released when the phones are released aka when the program is distributed the source code will be released.Wow now Slashdot is now Trolling.

Re:Congratulations, citizens of NATO countries!
Actually, liberals have pretty much been unified in their stance against supporting dictatorship regimes, who murder their citizens and fail to respect basic human rights. Unlike some, other groups. Watch The War On Democracy and then show me a single liberal who supports overthrowing democratic governments. Show me a single liberal who is against basic human rights. In every case I can think of, liberals have opposed supporting these regimes, whilst those on the right-wing have often argued otherwise (though sometimes they do admit they got it wrong)

French cops are too soft
In where I live, you could be charged of national treason for reporting a police officer locking six girls in his own basement for his own pleasure and occasionally taking them out for earning money by prostitution (that how he got caught - after locking them up for two years, and two girls were already found dead).
And good luck of being caught misbehaved in public, or you would be dragged into the police station and being hit for at least two hours, even when you are a high ranking military officer yourself.
I'm risking my life telling you this. Now please excuse while I get the door, someone has been knocking my door vigorously for several minutes already... -

Re:Impatient, much?
I don't know where the Slashdot summary pulled the (strangely unlinked) quote from JBQ, but in his most recent post in Google+. he confirmed the source is coming: https://plus.google.com/112218872649456413744/posts/HB5qQHeNKBQ
JBQ is the guy who almost resigned in protest over the Cyanogenmod debacle (when Google demanded that they don't bundle the Google apps with their rom), and he's the guy in charge of releasing the code to the Android open source project.
So when he says the source is coming, I'm inclined to believe him. -

Re:*headdesk*.For once an AC post I can agree with. There's also this post talking about moving the AOSP from kernel.org due to load issues to Google's own servers, and includes this on ICS:

Re:Bad title.
4.0 is out? Where? The first phone running 4.0 (the Galaxy Nexus) doesn't come out til next month.
You can run ICS quite happily in the android emulator from the SDK right now. So, yeah, it's out.
The source isn't out yet, but Google's been very specific that it will be released in the next few weeks ("We plan to release the source for the recently-announced Ice Cream Sandwich soon, once it’s available on devices") just as Gingerbread was.
This post is a joke -- it focuses on the comments on an engineer who has nothing to do with the ICS code release, and says as much. However, some people seem so convinced that Google's gone full-evil that they're jumping on every "no comment".
Don't
/. editors check stories for troll submissions these days? -
Re:Sue!Well that's cool because ICS isn't available yet (binary or source). It will launch with the galaxy nexus. Which also happens to be when the source will be made available.
We plan to release the source for the recently-announced Ice Cream Sandwich soon, once it’s available on devices.
http://groups.google.com/group/android-building/msg/c73c14f9b0dcd15a This article is a complete non-story.
-
Re:Bad title.
If by "being very evasive", you mean posting the following tidbit here:
We plan to release the source for the recently-announced Ice Cream Sandwich soon, once it’s available on devices.
But that doesn't sound evasive at all. It sounds like the exact thing they've been saying since the 3.1 ruckus (which was bad, and was their fault, unquestionably). Wait at least till the first ICS device (Galaxy Nexus, I think) is shipped -- if you don't feel like giving them a reasonable couple weeks after that, well ok, but nobody paying any attention at all could possibly expect they'd have released the source by now, since they always said it would be when the phone-ready version (previously 3.1, now 4.0) was out.

Hi!
As you know, like many other projects the Android Open-Source Project was
affected by the recent kernel.org downtime. So, we’re pleased to let you
know that the Gingerbread source code is now available again, and AOSP git
servers are back online.
Even before the kernel.org downtime, it was clear that AOSP was sometimes
taxing kernel.org’s git infrastructure. When we did the Gingerbread source
release, for example, load due to AOSP made part of kernel.org unusable for
several days. This isn’t fair to kernel.org’s staff or the community, so for
some time we’ve been preparing our own git hosting on Google servers.
We were finishing up just as kernel.org experienced their downtime, so the
Gingerbread source is now available on Google’s servers. Accordingly, the
git URLs have changed.
Here are the instructions to access the new git servers:
- You need to get the latest version of the repo tool:
curl https://dl-ssl.google.com/dl/googlesource/git-repo/repo > ~/bin/repo
- You need to initialize a new repository:
repo init -u https://android.googlesource.com/platform/manifest -b
android-2.3.7_r1
- The full instructions are at
http://source.android.com/source/downloading.html
There are a few limitations to be aware of:
- Our priority has been getting the main source code mirrors back online,
so for the moment gitweb source browsing and Gerrit Code Review are still
unavailable.
- We are now working on bringing AOSP’s Gerrit Code Review site back up,
and hope to be able to say something here soon.
- It might be a little while longer before gitweb comes back,
unfortunately, since Gerrit Code Review is the next priority.
- To reiterate, these servers contain only the ‘gingerbread’ and ‘master’
branches from the old AOSP servers. We plan to release the source for the
recently-announced Ice Cream Sandwich soon, once it’s available on devices.
- As these new servers are, well, new, there may be hiccups if we
encounter unexpected issues. However we’re keeping a close eye on them and
will respond to any issues as quickly as possible.
Finally, we’d like to send a huge “thank-you” to the kernel.org community
and Oregon State University Open-Source Lab staff. They’ve done an
incredible job hosting the AOSP source code mirror and Gerrit Code Review
for nearly 3 years. Without them, it’s safe to say that AOSP would not be
where we are today.
Thanks, and happy coding!
- Dan -
Re:Umm....Gingerbread is version 2.3. Ice Cream Sandwich is version 4.0. Most devices won't ever see the 3.0 updates and instead will just jump to 4.0.
This whole article is a non-issue - Google has said several times that the source would be released along with the new Galaxy Nexus. From http://groups.google.com/group/android-building/msg/c73c14f9b0dcd15a
:We plan to release the source for the recently-announced Ice Cream Sandwich soon, once it’s available on devices.
They had some decent reasons for not releasing the Honeycomb source. Perhaps their reasons weren't good enough to make up for not releasing it at all, but their promises to release the 4.0 source have kept devs happy for a few months now. I see 4.0 as the update to 3.x that cleans up the source properly, and has the added benefit of no longer dividing between phones and tablets. Devs can finally get back to writing one app that works on everything.

Re:Telescopes need to be focused?
Oh, I forgot to say - the reason for the focus on a telescope is to correct for warping of the structure of the telescope, not really to move the focal plane per se.
And there is something comical about having a mirror the size of the earth's orbit focusing its light in on a central point floating only 56 meters above the surface of the meter at the center. I imagine that all kinds of crazy effects come into play in such a situation. Sunlight reflecting off of a comet in the ort cloud would probably burn a hole in a steel plate for starters...
Hmm, the CMB has a flux of 3uW/m^2. The mirror has an area of 5*10^23 m^2. So, that means that your eyepiece has 1.6 exawatts of power focused on it just from the big bang. You'd certainly have no trouble making out the structure of the early universe.
Actually, I'm not certain about the last calculation - the mirror has that much radiation falling on it, but I'm not sure if all of that would be focused on the eyepiece. Plus, that assumes that your mirror reflects all wavelengths of EM since most of that energy is way down into the RF range.

Re:Telescopes need to be focused?
I think you're going to need a bigger mirror for that...
:)Focal planes only exist at less than the hyperfocal distance, given by H=f^2/NC.
The hubble has a focal length of 58m - let's consider that a good figure to shoot for. Let's say the pixel size is 10uM. Suppose we want a hyperfocal distance of 2000 light years.
Plugging it all into google we get that we need an aperature of f-1.8x10^-10. That's a bit faster than the typical DSLR lens. F-number is just f/d, so given that f is 56m we can plug that back into google and get that you need a mirror about 2.8 au in diameter. Have fun with that...
