Re:United Nations University, Not the UN
In your haste to exonerate the UN, you missed something.
Yes, if you read the actual Google cached page (and not just the map), you'd find something interesting in the headline and very first paragraph:
"Fifty million climate refugees by 2010.
Today we find a world of asymmetric development, unsustainable natural resource use, and continued rural and urban poverty. There is general agreement about the current global environmental and development crisis. It is also known that the consequences of these global changes have the most devastating impacts on the poorest, who historically have had limited entitlements and opportunities for growth."
Now that's not an 'official' UN site... or is it? Let's go to the front page of the grida.no site and see who they are:
"GRID-Arendal is a collaborating centre of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Established in 1989 by the Government of Norway as a Norwegian Foundation, our mission is to communicate environmental information to policy-makers and facilitate environmental decision-making for change. We are based in Arendal, Norway and have offices in Ottawa, Canada and Stockholm, Sweden."
Long story short - even if the UN *itself* didn't put out such a statement, one of its own programs authorized and publicized it - no matter the source.
TFA's author is right in the premise of pointing out excessive alarmism.
As for the actuality of flooding and such, sure, it is happening. OTOH, I'm kind of wondering where those 50m refugees are. Katrina and Pakistan (your sort-of examples) have bupkis to do with rising sea levels - one was blasted by hurricane storm surge in lands which were below sea level since long before human settlement - the other was due to flooding, yes, but not from the sea at all.
BTW - It doesn't help when you're fudging your defense with (obviously paraphrased): 'OAMG it's all environmental and no one can tell if it's AGW or not, so we better FUD them in and count them as AGW refugees anyway!'
Seriously - let's stick to known facts, and stop making extrapolations based on emotion and guesswork.

Here is a link to the map, whuch the UN took down but was still to be found in Google's cache.

United Nations University, Not the UN
This article clearly demonstrates what's wrong with America's science reporting. If the UN had released a report claiming 50 million global warming refugees by 2010, there would be dozens of news articles on it. The supposed incriminating evidence is a Google Cache page with this map that doesn't itself say anything about refugees, but does highlight areas most susceptible to sea level rise. The "50 million climate refugees by 2010" statement is not referenced anywhere in any UN report, it's a six words on one defunct graphic that was part of a larger report on world agriculture by the UN University. This 50 million by 2010 figure comes from Dr. Bogardi at the UN University in Bonn, NOT the United Nations.
The problem with this prediction being made by any scientist is that keeping track of how many refugees there are is difficult (current estimate by the UN is 1 million a year, a figure that the Red Cross lends support to with the statement that environmental disasters are displacing more people than war now) and the causes are debatable. The epic flooding in Pakistan created 10 million refugees, Hurricane Katrina added a quarter of a million refugees, and desertification in Africa is displacing millions. Can we blame these events on Global Warming? Hurricanes and floods happen without a warming world, but a warming world increases the chances of such disasters happening.
Then there are the refugees that no one realizes. In the small coastal town where I live in North Carolina, houses have been falling into the swamp one by one for decades, but the residents blame it on people building their homes in flood zones, not realizing that sea levels in their state have risen three times the rate of rise on the rest of the Atlantic coast. People didn't build their homes in the water, the water rose 1.5 meters over the 50 years since they were built, but nobody realizes this because of landscape amnesia.
You can read all about the various estimates concerning environmental refugees on Wikipedia. It took the author of this untruth less than an hour to post their nonsense and the deniers flooded the Internet with it quickly. It took me two hours to research and write this response, because I wanted to know what I was talking about, and I will only reach a very small audience in comparison. This is why I despair when considering how science could possibly stand a chance against the overwhelming confidence ignorance brings the unscientific masses.

Re:Online poker may not be illegal, sending money
What *is* illegal as of the recent UIGEA act is for banks to provide you the ability to send your money to / receive money from these online gaming sites.
And, so where are the sibling indictments for the card companies and banks?
I notice that Full Tilt was taking deposits by Visa, MasterCard and AMEX. And, they were also allowing international withdrawals at global banks, like Citigroup, Bank of America, Barclays, etc. Then it would be simply a matter of pulling funds from a local U.S. branch to yield the results of the withdrawal to the linked international account.
Please, DHS, don't patronize us. Your buddies at the banks and credit card companies have been giving a blind eye to this supposedly illegal money transfer scheme when they themselves have been part and parcel to it all along, wholesale, the entire time. How does someone from the U.S. get money into a company like Full Tilt Poker to even play if the banks are not complicit?
Let's call this what it is, payback time for monied gambling interests that pull the puppet strings of our government. The Senate Majority Leader happens to harken from Nevada and also happens to have the ear of the President. (Mr. Change, aka Mr. Freedom, who renewed and escalated the Patriot Act and boldly empowered DHS with extra-judicial powers to seize private domain name property in violation of the Fifth Amendment.) There is no justice in a government that issues indictments/prosecutes/punishes based on a corrupt system of graft, nepotism and crony politics.
Welcome to the Banana Republic of America.

Re:So what?
look at Thorium and not Uranium. Uranium is scarce in the Earth and needs to be refined to U235 and then precious little of that is actually burnt in a nuclear reactor. From a kg of U, only miniscule amounts of it actually is turned into energy. Thorium, on the other hand, is as plentiful as lead on the planet, doesn't require isotopic refinement, and is mostly burnt in a reactor. And unlike Uranium at Fukushima, Thorium doesn't do anything by itself - turn off the power or let a tsunami hit it, it will stop immediately. Watch India this year when they get their Thorium reactor running, China announced in March that they are going with Thorium.
Why do we still have U-reactors? Possibly because of cold war politics requiring Plutonium for bombs since the 60s, and the French twisting the EU's arms to use U in Europe in the 80's and later.
Instead of saying "I'd take it over freezing in the dark...", say stuff like "I will change my day-to-day lifestyle to be more sustainable", which is something you can do today and inspire others, and look for technology solutions.
Eg. Suggest that your town follows the example of Grossmugl in Austria, by turning off the lights at night, to save energy and reduce light pollution, http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?ie=UTF8&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=de&tl=en&twu=1&u=http://www.starlightoasis.org/&usg=ALkJrhjTZ2SQ3o4rJ3P2u9RyVcU-rSKIlw -

This guarantees spam
Well, now we know that "+1" isn't about search quality.
Most ad clicks come from a tiny percentage of users. 85% of ad clicks come from 8% of users. Worse, from an advertiser perspective, the heavy clickers don't buy much. Also, ad click-through dropped 50% from 2007 to 2011. Only losers click on ads now.
"+1" is likely to have similar demographics. If it's important to you for your friends to know that you like some product, you probably have no life. Or you're a spambot. As an approach to social networking, it seems rather lame. Wave and Buzz were at least original.
As someone who tracks search spam, I've been underwhelmed by Google in the last six months. The Google Places merge into web search last October, and the subsequent heavy spamming of recommendations, should have taught them that "social signals" are very easily spammed.
Levy's new book "In the Plex", about Google, just came out. I recommend it if you need to understand Google.

The military is gettin into it with fake personas
The Guardian disclosed that a "Californian corporation has been awarded a contract with United States Central Command (Centcom), which oversees US armed operations in the Middle East and Central Asia, to develop what is described as an 'online persona management service' that will allow one US serviceman or woman to control up to 10 separate identities based all over the world."
A program called Operation Metalgear "involves an army of fake cyber personalities immersed in social networking websites for the purposes of manipulating the mass population via influence, crawling information from major online communities (such as Facebook), and identifying anonymous personalities via correlating stored information from multiple sources to establish connections between separate online accounts, using this information to arrest dissidents and activists who work anonymously."
Here's an opportunity along those lines : US Air Force seeking software that "will allow 10 personas per user, replete with background, history, supporting details, and cyber presences that are technically, culturally and geographacilly [sic] consistent." And "individual applications will enable an operator to exercise a number of different online persons from the same workstation and without fear of being discovered by sophisticated adversaries." Finally, "personas must be able to appear to originate in nearly any part of the world and can interact through conventional online services and social media platforms. The service includes a user friendly application environment to maximize the user's situational awareness by displaying real-time local information."

Re:And, it's gone now
Also, there's Google's cached version.
But regardless, I'd probably remove it, too, since there's a huge, unreasonable, internet shitstorm over nothing. Yes, their example is oversimplified, but it's intended for the average college freshman (not always the brightest tool in the shed). It's also an example of things they would be wise to avoid, not a rule. If you don't know how to secure your router, it's probably best not to set one up in your dorm room. -
Re:QQ
I have to politely disagree. Nobody ever amassed money in the millions of dollars by being stupid, or we would all be rich. On top of that, the economic crash you mention is from 2007 and everyone still investing today already trimmed their goals, learned their lessons and started over. So why has Facebook continued to make money? I think you're mistaking investors for purely commercial ad revenue --one is asking for a stake of profits, while the other simply pays X euros, gets what they want and bail out next month if things look risky. There are no angel-seed-investor contracts for them, because they don't care about facebook as much as they want ad sales and user data.
Keeping that in mind...
Most investors who's money's at Facebook likely tought like you do, and skipped any serious investigation because surely those who came before them did it, right?
Before anyone signs an agreement for a single cent to go to facebook, serious investigation takes place. Even Google's startup was nothing more than a very risky ad business model that everyone "serious" denied them at first. Eventually someone gave them 100k and others followed suit. where you're going to put money than
Bad things will happen and luck has a role at startup times. But Facebook stopped being a startup half a decade ago. That means that it's not investors so much as well-informed paying customers. And with all the money they're throwing at Facebook, you can be sure they pay their private analysts to run 'credit reports' and stay on top of their game to jump on whatever the next successful looking revenue source well before the other well-informed giants do. If bubbles happen --well, there's always risk funds, insurance, and sadly, the newborn expectation of 'too big to fail' and taxpayer bailouts.

If you want to see a real clothing program at work
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3xrkMhKwII
"Marvelous Designer" is a cloth simulation program. You drape the fabric over an object (human avatar, or anything else you want). Then it simulates how the fabric will drape in more or less real time (a fast PC helps in that). It takes into account stretch, stiffness, etc. Then you can export the model to other 3D programs, or to sewing software to produce actual clothing from it.
I used it to make this dress and bedspread for a virtual world:

Re:Nothing but respect...
With all the lies that we get told out of all governments these days who knows what to believe. There was a report earlier that was taken down that US West Coast readings were up to ten times normal. Then a report that the EPA radiation meters were down(now apparently working) and a retraction of the story in my first link. Who knows what to believe any more. Even I could be a sock puppet. I loved sock puppets when I was young. Isn't it awful how words change from denoting nice things to nasty.

Re:Where is the line?
The court's ruling itself can be found here. It's a little wonky linguistically and the frames are messy, but scroll down and you'll find some really interesting details. For your question it seems the court considered two factors - was it a computerised device (which the translation makes difficult to establish...seemingly could be read either way) and second, was there an intrusion which exposed personal data. Since the latter didn't occur it doesn't matter if the former is true.
As for other details, the case involves a guy posting a threat - on 4chan - to commit a school shooting and apparantly hacked the Wifi as a little camo'. -
Naughton's resumeIn his current resume, "Microsoft" was changed to "Fortune 500 company" in a couple of places, but google cache hasn't caught up yet.
From the original resume:
Co-counsel defending Microsoft against a putative consumer class action alleging that it had violated wiretapping statutes and common law privacy rights by designing Windows to permit third parties to place cookies on computers. Obtained dismissal of complaint.
and this:
Represented Microsoft in several dozen lawsuits against resellers and corporate end-users of counterfeit, infringing, and unlicensed software.
At least he seems to know which side his bread is buttered on.

Removing Microsoft references from Bio
Noticed something interesting about the Huffingpost's blogger and IP lawyer Edward Naughton's bio on his law firm's site Brown Rudnick The current page doesn't mention that Mr. Naughton represented Microsoft in different lawsuits. However googlecache reveals something different:
"This is Google's cache of http://www.brownrudnick.com/bio/bio.asp?ID=512&ForwdName=Edward+J.+Naughton. It is a snapshot of the page as it appeared on Mar 8, 2011 07:27:15 GMT. The current page could have changed in the meantime. Learn more"
What does the cached version say?
Just this:
"Co-counsel defending Microsoft against a putative consumer class action alleging that it had violated wiretapping statutes and common law privacy rights by designing Windows to permit third parties to place cookies on computers. Obtained dismissal of complaint."and this:
" Represented Microsoft in several dozen lawsuits against resellers and corporate end-users of counterfeit, infringing, and unlicensed software."I wonder why that information was removed from his bio?
Also, he mentions and links to "prominent" blogger Florian Müller. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Re:Priorities
There haven't been any direct deaths from the emission of greenhouse gases either, so how is that any different?
You're kidding! That was elementary school knowledge even outside the USA 20 years ago. Skin melanoma is only one type of cancer it produces. Its deaths are 1 in 5 cases. We're not counting the detrimental effects of cataracts and the other skin cancers, and who knows what else.
When something is so devastating and beta quality, society is learning that it must die at the outset, lest you want to put up with unexpected alternatives. Here's to hoping that the timeline to either harness/ban nuclear power is unlike civilization's slow tobacco control laws which weren't dreamed up while several millenia of exposure and are deeply ingrained figurative cancer pushed world health into a corner hard enough to crush the lobbyists and peer pressure even japan to make laws following the USA (per the conclusion of that paper.)

Re:SSL is the key
Even factoring in the People's OS, evidence shows that they have no OS chokehold over their supposedly oppressed citizens: By Microsoft's shamefaced anti-IE6 campaign figures, the Chinese are the kings of the IE6 holdout with 35% --a full 10% lead over the South Korean runner-ups. Other analysts placed China at 45% last November, when 15% was the world's average.
An older article article stresses CCW Research's statement that 33% of new PC buyers uninstall that Linux derivative right off the bat, but the PC shop tends to do just prior to the sale that for them as a loyalty perk. More unsettling is that IE6 isn't the only IE... IE7 and IE8 numbers has to push the balance even further away from the People's OS --new pirated PC's don't easily get XP even in the USA, especially in the mobile form-factors. That counts for fewer Windows downupgrades to XP that would otherwise beef up IE6's numbers in China.

A code thief like you cares about Open SORES
And frankly, open "standards" - the ability to say "I need to be able to play my songs & videos, open my books, and view & edit my documents on whatever device I buy," is the only part of "open" that most individuals care about (and even that... it's often not viewed as a terribly urgent need.) by Americano (920576) on Tuesday March 01, @01:30AM (#35345360)
Or is this not proof of how you "program", by asking others to do your work for you, or, how you steal code from books and claim it as yours?
