Another thing that makes ya go hmmm...
From the main page, it seems that one of Digital Candle's products is Go!Zilla -an ad blocker and a download manager.
According to the site GoZilla is Ad-Free.
Which begs the question - why is Go!Zilla offering companies the chance to advertise with GoZilla. I mean, if the product isn't adware/spyware, how would you advertise with it?

Re:come on!
Mozilla was not the first. Go!Zilla was.

Another 'zilla to pester
I wonder if they'll go after the product of one of my former employers, Go!Zilla. It used to have a more lizardy logo, but now it only has big eyes.
As a lark when I worked there, I once arranged for us to buy a number of 6 foot inflatable Godzilla dolls, which we dressed in company t-shirts and abused. We also had "I love the lizard!" logo tshirts.
But that was a long time ago and the company is gone now; only the product remains. -
Auriate/Radiate did a similar tactic
Remember one of your favorite companies that got shareware authors to release their software for free in exchange for including an ad client that watched where you went on the Internet? They also got sued. Their settlement? You can purchase a discounted version of Go!Zilla Plus through them, which I believe is actually the registered version one of their products.
If you believe you once used a product with the Auriate/Radiate ad client, and believe you might be entitled to the aforementioned discounted version of Go!Zilla, the page to determine this is titled "Class Action", and may be found off of Radiate's privacy disclosure. They used to be called Auriate until a series of negatively slanted stories came out about them (or, so several articles have led me to believe).
Note I did not this link to this page directly because they redirect you to their privacy policy page first anyway. Please don't take advantage of their offer unless you really *really* installed a product that used their ad client; I don't feel like being sued for posting this.

Re:Not an important question really.
I cannot download a file to a different drive with out it first being on my C drive as a temp file (most of the time this is true), so if there isnt any room on C: then your fucked. This can be fixed if you change your temp drive to the drive your saving it to but thats incredibly lame.
I always though this was IE's most brain dead idea. There are a few solutions though. You might want to try gozilla. It's addware and the last version I tried was increadibly buggy, but if you do a lot of downloading it's the best thing I've found.I've always wondered why there isn't a linux equivilent. I bet it would be easy to write a download aid program for OS software, since it could grab the MIRRORS file and ping the locations. Actually a perl script could prbably do it, does anyone know about something like this?

If you have Windows then get......these two ftp clients:
They won't speed up the download but it can resume if interrupted and uses mirrors.

Re:Outrageous Violation of Privacy
I'm surprised people find this OK.
When you consider the alternatives (feature deficient or time limited software), banner ads are definitely the lesser of two (well, three) evils. I currently work for a company that makes money by imbedding ads in software. At first, I was totally against the concept (I use junkbuster to block website ads) but now I can see the appeal (as outlined below):
1) It gives the users a choice in *useable* software. Not some piece of crippleware.
2) In some cases, you can use the traditional shareware model and give registered users a version without the ads. Take Go!Zilla ( http://www.gozilla.com) for example.
3) It's an almost guaranteed way for developers to get _paid_. I like writing free (speech and/or beer) software. I like having money to take care of my family. The ads permit the software developers to do both of these in a manner that's been proven to work in other industries (tv, radio, magazines). Just like these other mediums, if you don't want to see the ads, choose a different product. Don't condemn the developers methods of revenue unless you're ready to cough up money to support the application that they are giving you for free. (Obviously, I don't agree with ads that display in commercial applications.)
So now, besides tracking what web page I am
viewing they'll be tracking what part of the
app I use ?
Well, let's ignore the fact that developers could already put this feature into the software without telling you. The only part that needs to be "tracked" is whether or not you clicked on the ad. Some places will do you a favor and not download ads when the window is not active or minimized. Some even limit the bandwidth used by the ads so that it does not interfere with your network use.
How can they put banner ads without a live
connection to/from my app.
Simple answer is that they cannot. You application will talk to the ad server to get new ads.
This is as bad as the Intel ID. Combine the
two and you might as well run naked all over
the Internet.
Pure FUD. I'm surprised you surf the web at all. All webservers I've seen keep logs. From what I've seen, most companies couldn't care less about individuals anyways. All they care about is your demographic profile. What ads can they show you that will increase your chance of clicking on one of them and possibly purchasing their product or service.

Go!zilla works on this modelThe Win32 downloading program Go!Zilla uses exactly this model. The "free" version is banner supported, but if you register the ads go away.
I've found that I am willing to put up with it, because I only see the ads while interacting with Gozilla. Most of the time, it's just quitely sitting minimized in my tray. When I want to download a new file or manage downloaded files, I only see the ads for a brief time.
So, I think it's possible for ad supported software to work, but not everywhere. I could never use a word processor which constantly had bouncing flashing ad banners above my work. Or compiling and seeing "This link of your project brought to you by Acme Corp."
I also don't think business's would put up with ads in their "work" software. So I think ad banners will be an avoidable option. I like options.

C++ dudes : Get Involved. Some Ideas.I really want to support mozilla.org, I think it's great. I want it to kick IE's ass, I want it to be a smack in Billy Gate's face.
I wrote to the Mozilla Wishlist once ... with some idea's I had accumulated over the months. If anybody here is good in C++, you may want to take up one of my ideas as a project.
And if yer not a C++ guru, go to mozilla.org anyway and help out however you can. It's a great project, and I want it to be the best it can be.
Attached is the letter I sent to the wishlist.

Dear Mozilla Team,
Over the past few months, I have kept a text file of ideas that I thought up for Mozilla 5. It would be my pleasure to share these ideas with you, and it excites me how for the first time, with mozilla.org, I can have a part in influencing the design of one of my favorite programs, Netscape Communicator.I have 3 big ideas that are major feature requests, some other ideas that would be easy to impliment and would be very useful, and a small list of crazy ideas that may or may not interest you.
I'd like to have someone reply to me with their opinion on each idea if that is possible.
Again, I really hope that you guys consider these ideas for Mozilla 5.
And now, the rugged list of ideas for Netscape 5.0
you know how you have telnet://, gopher://, ftp:// ?
It would be very easy to have these:finger://
whois://
dns:// (resolve hostname to ip and vice versa)
ping://
trace:// (traceroute)etc. I'm telling you, it would be easy to do and I would LOVE it, it would make Netscape an all around net-utility belt and not add much bloat at all!
---------------------
Have a good download manager built in. Go!Zilla is a great tool.
Heck, why don't you buy out GoZilla and add it to netscape? It searches "Ftp search sites" for other download locations and tests the speed of each server, and lets you download from the fastest one. It supports canceling of a download (with ability to resume later)
this would be a must have feature. I really, really would like to see this, but please do not add "ads" like in SmartDownload. check out http://www.gozilla.com to see what i mean.
trust me on this one guys..
-----------------
maximum syntax guessing / Smart browsing.
if a user types in www.something.co and forgets to type the "m", then try contacting something.com IF something.co doesn't resolve / connect.
I'm sure you guys can think of an innovative way to handle these kinds of URL errors:
wwww.something.com
www.somethingcom
wwwsomething.com
wwws.omething.com
www.something.commremember, you would only try syntax guessing if:
1) the address that they typed in didn't resolve or connect
2) the option for syntax guessing is enabled
3) the address typed is suitable for syntax guessing. for example, if a genius domain (www.something.com) didn't exist, then dont try fixing it.
=====--more ideas summed up in a line or 2--====
* multiple email accounts
* very advanced / expert email filters
* remembering site passwords
* full intellimouse support
* full screen viewing
* when you paste text from the clipboard that's multiline but contains a url, still read that url.
IE, notepad is a multiline Edit control, and its possible to actually get a Carriage return / line feed before or after the actual URL. and when you paste it into the Netscape URL dropdown box, which is one line, the url doesn't show. If you dont know what im talking about, then forget it..* support those blocks that can make a link underline or whatever when you move the mouse over it (like ie)
* consider including an ActiveX wrapper.
-*-begin crazy ideas-*-
* I miss Infoseek's "QuickSeek", which provided a very easy way to search InfoSeek.
make it so you can type the following into the url box?av tigers
and it would search altavista for "tigers"?is beer
and it would search infoseek for beer.--
* Align netscape.exe using WinAlign or something to make it load faster
* perhaps make it "work well" or even integrate with ICQ? (both of you are owned by aol now..)* i dont think anybody needs the "set as wallpaper" popupmenu feature.
* consider VBscript support, if you're bored.
make a way for users of netscape to easily submit "wishlists" and programs ideas. let them know netscape cares.
---end ideas---
In closing, I hope you at the very least CONSIDER these ideas and their benefits to your users. Personally, I think that it would be a very good investment.
