Re: Stupid
A proper Russian made or officially licensed AK-47 which supports fully automatic firing? True... it'd take 9-12 months for your NFA paperwork to clear before you could take possession of the rifle.
You can however walk into oodles of gun stores and buy a knock off (AK-47 is probably the most patent infringed firearm in history) or maybe licensed version for a few hundred dollars.
A quick search turns up plenty, take this one which is only a 30 min drive from where I am sitting and the shop looks to close at 8pm today and as an FFL will run a background check on you should you show up to buy it in person.
So yes... you can just go down to the gun store and buy what most people will scream is an AK-47 if they see it: http://i.imgur.com/ueu7x5T.jpg

Re:False Flag operation -- how can you tell?
LOL You're worried about someone bringing that into a fast food restaurant? Dude, if I have a firearm like that and want to bring it in to a restaurant then there's fuck all you can do about it - if I'm a criminal. It's not even all *that* dangerous - but I pulled the "scariest" sounding one off the link you gave me. I came up with this:
https://www.gunsamerica.com/93...
So, using that as your definition, you're worried about someone walking around with that legally? Why? 'Snot like they're gonna go shooting the place up with that. If you're worried about criminals then you've a whole other issue and that issue really isn't that firearm in particular - or anything like it. Those are pretty harmless as firearms go.
Let's start with the name in the URL...
AK-47... That sounds scary but the AK-47 is a very specific thing - this is semi-automatic, for starters.
Bullpup, now there's a scary name. That has to do with where the handle is and where the stock is, for the most part. It's a design style.
That thing is painted in silly colors, the person owning it is an idiot, and it's less lethal than half the shit I keep in my basement - and I have firearms from long before you were born.If a criminal is walking around with *any* firearm, it's a bad thing. Criminals are (generally) not allowed firearms. I know a criminal who took a firearm from someone who was threatening to shoot his wife. He was actually allowed to do so, the judge was willing to accept that. It's when he took it, took it and hid it, and then didn't cal the cops immediately (even though he called not long after) he is doing time in prison.
How much more strict do you want the laws? What's reasonable to you?
Anything you're calling an assault rifle is shit to be worried about. Yeah, they fire big bad bullets. They're not the problem. The problem is that criminals have them when they're not supposed to have them. Using a firearm in a crime is bad, m'kay. Using an assault rifle in a crime? That's just stupid. That's how you get dead. They're going to use whatever and they're going to acquire what they need. That's what bad people have always done - they don't obey the laws. That thing you're calling an assault rifle is not even an automatic or even a select-fire weapon. They're sporting rifles that you weirdos decided to get pissed about which made people think they're all the more awesome and buy even more of them, sort of ruining the gun market but also bringing some neat new tech into it, for no reason.
That's like getting mad that someone has their father's old Ruger
.22 LR which they used to go plink tin-cans. That's what that rifle is that you're calling an assault rifle. If some dumb ass wants to run around with it and pretend he's Rambo then there's jack shit we can do about it - and generally, they aren't the ones that are the problem. Not comparatively speaking, no... Those things you're looking for are called sport rifles, and yes - deaths and injuries do occur. That's part of living in a nation without tyranny. Now, tyranny is not necessarily be what the guy with the guns protect YOU with - you have to do that on your own, or not. Tyranny is the government taking away that one more liberty. I don't know about you but I kind of like my rights - all of them. I like your rights too. How many things do you want the government take away that you're scared of? Think that through, carefully.
No, I don't want them taking away the rights of gay people to marry, no I don't want them taking away the right to abort, nor do I want to teach the kids that some Mexican carpenter named Jesus's dad knocked up the daughter at a house he was contracting on and that's why we celebrate Christmas. I like all of my rights. I like the rights that you enjoy that make you someone I don't even like. That's true, I like your rights too. I value your rights as much as I value my own - perhaps mor

Re:Not sure why this ban would even be necessary
There is now a
.308 (a rifle cartridge) in test markets that's a polymer case, metal primer, powder and metal bullet. They are trying to find ways to contain the heat a bit longer, long enough to get it out of the breech on a bolt gun.
The purpose of that is to keep the rifle barrel at a lower and more stable temp longer with sustained fire, making snipers more effective because a warmer barrel puts the bullet in a different place.
It will not be long before the case and possibly the primer will be plastic. Leaving only the projectile as the last step.
Here's an article from almost 2 years ago talking about how plastic cartridges are "just around the corner." Not to mention, plastic ammunition has been around since the 1970's in some form or another.
Yet, most armies still choose the standard brass/lead/copper ammunition for anything more important than target practice. Probably a good reason for that - metal ammo works now, as opposed to maybe working sometime in the indeterminate future.
Of course, all that is ignoring the fact that you missed my point - it's not likely that a plastic barreled muzzle loader would be able to withstand the pressures released when touching the powder load off. In the case of a cap-and-ball pistol, you're looking at catastrophic detonation of the cylinder... not what I would want happening to something I'm holding in my hand.

Re:Seems fairly intelligent...
We need actionable information, or pointers to where we can find it. Anyone know where to start?
Unless you still think letter-writing and phone calls are going to make a difference at this point.

Re:Pro-tip: Shoot them dead.
Boys anti-tank rifle. You can find them in the U.S. re-chambered for
.50 BMG. Comes with a 5 round detachable magazine. Costs around $5000 on up. They should call it AT reach out and touch someone.I imagine something similar is in new production but am not up on current
.50 BMG rifles. -
Re:M-44 sniper rifle?
Fair enough.
:-)
It bothered me to no end every time the "Assault Weapons Ban" issue came up in the media that they would just regurgitate the same crap that the pro-ban senators were vomiting up without actually checking the facts and realizing that the crap that these senators were talking about was ALREADY BANNED (and still is) and the legislation they were trying to pass was for something completely different than what they were telling reporters. But the reporters didn't bother to check. So here we are, a year later, and I have yet to see blood in the streets or machine guns at the local gun shop (at least for under $10,000 anyway). The reporters completely goofed it for the most part.
There is so much intrigue around the role of a sniper that sometimes I think reporters are a little eager to use the word when it really doesn't make sense. This article was one example.
Compare and contrast...
Russian Mosin-Nagant M-44 - Does this look remotely like a sniper rifle?
Savage 10FP-LE2 "sniper" rifle - This is what the professionals in law enforcement often turn to.
I've got both of these in my collection. I love the M44 but the idea of sharpshooting with it, let alone sniping, is laughable. -

Re:Crucial point
Don't forget that it semi-automatic AK-47s are still easy (and cheap!) to get.
And the only thing that fully automatic is good for is either display of banging noises, or laying down covering fire for an trench attack.
Or really, really, really hunting Bambi hardcore style. -
Re:I'm a parent.
My mom used to not let me play with toy guns. I now have a large collection of real guns including some of the dreaded "assault" rifles. My next purchase will be a Model 97 shotgun.
I shoot targets, not animals because deer aren't doing anything that bothers me. Although if I lived in an area where deer are a menace I might develop a taste for venison. -
Re:7.62??? Why not .50 caliberThe scariest part of that page: "**SOLD**"
Rest easy. That is a fully automatic weapon. It is regulated under a whole parallel universe of extremely stringent Federal gun laws, about which the general public knows very little.
To buy a gun like that, you have to 1) get permission of your local police chief or sheriff, who can turn you down for any reason or no reason; 2) submit fingerprints and a photograph; 3) pass a thorough FBI background check; 4) comply with all State and local laws, as about one-quarter of the states do not allow such weapons to be owned; and 5) pay a $200 tax every time the gun is bought or sold.
These are the safest guns in the American arsenal. There are about 400,000 machine guns in the National Firearms Registry, and only one of them is known to have been used in a crime, EVER: a contract murder by a police officer many years ago.
Any history of felony conviction, domestic violence conviction or restraining order, drug addiction, or involuntary commitment to a mental hospital is an automatic disqualification. In practice, if you have the least reputation with your local PD as a trouble maker, you can forget about ever getting permission to buy such a gun.
This kind of gun is bought by wealthy, law-abiding collectors, who often refrain from ever firing them, in order to preserve their value as collector's items.
Me, I've got my eye on a nice little Ruger AC-556.
