Re:I'm one of the suckers
Hurricane Electric has been very good for me for almost a year now so I would recommend them: http://www.he.net/. They run some kind of modified Slackware and have MySQL and PHP.

Re:So who is a good host?
Following the suggestion of another slashdot poster in some story awhile back, I checked out hurricane electric. My site's hosted there, and from what I can see they've got pretty good rates. And hey, they run Linux..

Agreed! Here's some more...
I have a list of links to organizations who are interested in defending similar freedoms.
Union for the Public Domain, EFF, Digital Future Coalition, and more.
Please take a look and feel free to suggest any more to me. -
Activism (or: Don't Just Sit There!)
Analysis on Slashdot will do little to change anything, unless there's a bit of activism to go along with it.
There are a number of organizations in existence who apparently work on some aspect or another of intellectual property rights. An incomplete list (with links) can be found here. A cursory look makes me think that Union for the Public Domain is promising (though moving slowly) as an organization moving the right direction.
Anyone know of any others? Or, should another one be necessary? There needs to be someway to focus resources on this matter...

Might find some things..
here. Whenever I need to check devices I usually do it via the command line w/ the UCD SNMP package. and i automate the checking of devices via shell scripts and just have it page me if things go wrong..

A Metaphor
(And now for a little bit of sortof self-promotiing but hopefully also interesting stuff)...
There's a metaphor I used in an OSNews article I wrote a while back. The article was on Microsoft's claim that IE was part of their OS. The metaphor was: a radio isn't part of a car's engine. Read the article for the full effect. OK, it's true that it's flawed in some ways, but I still think that it provides some insight and food for thought.

Re:So what's a good service? For hosting you might try Hurricane Electric. Their servers use Linux and let you use PHP3 and MySQL. All starting at $9.95 a month. They're fast for me, they're only a hop or two from MAEWest (maybe not a good thing) and overall I'm quite happy. I've only used them for a month though, so YMMV. They currently register through NSI so you'd have to register it yourself using one of these alternate Name Servers.
There was another hosting service that advertised on Slashdot a while back. I don't have the URL handy, might not have it at all anymore.

Re:Alternatives?
Okay, I just noticed pointers to Llama Communications and HE.net above. Others?

Inexpensive Hosts
Unless they get back up due to popular demand and charity, try he.net - I've been using them for a couple of years on about 4 domains and have had zero problems - they're also on Linux...
