What have they ever done
What has CERN ever done for the IT industry?

Re:Too much for the 'NetDon't forget these are the guys who INVENTED the internet.. Is it really so hard to believe that Al Gore invented it?

Re:Too much for the 'Net
Don't forget these are the guys who INVENTED the internet. It would be as you know it today if it wasn't for them. So I wouldn't be surprised if they actually do something über amazing to transfer all that data.

Re:why
All in the name of research baby. "The internet" as we know it was in part created at CERN, if that does not merit researching high energy particles, I don't know what does. http://www.hitmill.com/internet/web_history.html

History of the WWW
Invented at CERN... which is where I'll hopefully be working in another few years

Open Source InnovationsThe open source guys can scrape together enough resources to reverse engineer stuff. That's easy. It's way cheaper to reverse engineer something than to create something new. But if the world goes to 100% open source, innovation goes to zero.
The open source guys hate it when I say this, but...
I found these three examples on one google search page. Saying something as broad as "Open Source is not Innovative" without some sort of proof to back it up just proves your talking out your rear! That statement is like saying "Innovative Products are never invented by anyone outside of a corporation"! Airplanes, the first Apple, come to mind.

Re:C++ Should Be The Only Programming LanguageC++ is still far better than Java. What most people call Java benefits are truly it's drawbacks too. The least you could do is get the dates right. Here is a history of C++. From the article:
C++ was written by Bjarne Stroustrup at Bell Labs during 1983-1985. C++ is an extension of C. Prior to 1983, Bjarne Stroustrup added features to C and formed what he called "C with Classes". He had combined the Simula's use of classes and object-oriented features with the power and efficiency of C. The term C++ was first used in 1983.

Re:Area 51 is a hoax by the goverment
But I thought that CERN invented the Internet
-
Re:but the evidence is still relatively weak.Considering they invented the web, I would expect them to be fairly well prepared for a slashdotting.
And yes, they really did invent it. Honest. See, for example, this link if you don't believe me.

A C to sail them on.
Designers in abundance, salesmen all around but what I need is a coder and a C to sail them on.
But this C is tiny and difficult to sail so I'll hand them all an upgrade to C++ and let them wail.
This shrieking is ill met, I stop and look profound as I have a solution it's C pound.
My coders all have left me with this ugly stinking mess I should have not given them more and more but merely better less. -
Re:
> THE ARPANET/INTERNET WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT TO WITHSTAND PHYSICAL ATTACK. THAT WAS THE REASON. THAT IS WHY IT WAS BUILT.
To my memory, Internet was created in CERN for free exchange of [scientific] ideas:

Doesn't that corrrespond to what is now the Open Source? You can call it an ideology. It were this continent's greedy screwheads that tried (and trying) to use if to profit (I remember the idea of charging $0.002 per page which was utterly ridiculous).
Alternative WiFi internet, mentioned in the first few posts, is a good thing. I think we will be there finally.
UNDERSTOOD?!?!? -
That's a stupid questionEverything has a history, of course.
:) I've done a good amount of online history-seeking, and I've found that the usual places of searching (like Google are the best--at least to find other subject-specialized sites. For some of these, there's always Yahoo!, which seems to have a good number of links in this directory.
Also the Online History of Computers seems alright.
If you're willing to spend a few bucks, you might invest in some of the titles in the IEEE Bibliography. LoL.
