This is not necessarily truth. Fully peer-to-peer networks *can* work in a scalable manner if we do a better job of searching. Query processing is the limiting issue for all truly P2P networks. I have been working on an idea to address this which involves query routing (instead of broadcasting) to reduce bandwidth requirements. Essentially, only nodes in the network which have a high probability of satisfying a query will recieve it.

Full details are in a draft paper here. I welcome comments.

The elections in the U.S. depend on two things:

Getting people who agree with you out to vote.
Making sure that people who don't agree with you don't vote.

Let's be blunt. The differences between Gush and Bore are miniscule, and growing smaller. Candidates race to the center as quickly as they can.

If you're sick of the two major party candidates, then check out the candidate list at Vote Smart . If nothing else, writing in the National Barking Spider Resurgence Party , Church of God Party , Lettuce Party , the Anti-Hypocrisy Party, the Hephzibau, the Corrective Actions Party , or Mike's Party.

A large groundswell for sixth-party candidates would be far more effective of a protest than not voting.

IANAA, (I Am Not An American) but hail from thier neigbour to the North. Since much of what goes on below the 49th eventually happens up here, I'll comment anyway.

Isn't it amazing. Here we are, 224 years after the American Revolution, and we're back to square one. If this follows through, the Citizens of the Good Ol' US of A will be paying sales tax to a coproration. Heh. Something like that hasn't happened since, ohhhhh... the British Crown decided to tax tea. Read the link, kids - that was to save a faltering coporation, namely the East India Company, too.

So, we have taxes on audio capable blanks to make sure the RIAA and it's kin get thier fair share, absurd patents and copyrights whose sole purpose is to guarantee profits for already successful companies, and now this. Makes you sick, especially when this and this stare you in the face each night on the news

It's a great attempt even though it's mostly a lovechild of engineering and creativity
Battery life may not be a big issue. I think there's no problem placing it on a charger every night. Especially if it's a drop-in charger. Most people don't wear their wristwatch to bed.
It's the best innovation in watches since the Casio CFX-40 scientific calculator on a watch!!! (and the Seiko TV wristwatch)

I'm a big fan of gadget watches. I used to own a Casio CFX-40 and have missed it ever since it broke. I'm bored with every other watch 'innovation' since the mid 80's. They're all variations on a theme. What style will the next Mega-Iron-Triathalonman sport watch come in next? Will it have a Karma-Meter or something? I can't wait to see if IBM starts something big with this research. Maybe other companies will get a clue that we have the technology to do something useful.

As for other arguments... Sure, lets put all the functionality in a PDA or cell phone. My Palm Pilot is easy to lug around on days when I have a shirt pocket. But with the business casual trend still coming along, how do I carry it if I'm wearing a Polo shirt? If my wristwatch performed similar functions, I'd gladly use it.

I have a Timex BeepwearPRO, but having a pager on my wrist doesn't seem as thrilling as I thought it would be. I'm waiting for a collection of wrist computers to become available.

But as it's been noted countless times before there are at least half a dozen alternatives to Napster, including Gnutella, CuteMX, Freenet, OpenNAP, IRC #mp3z and #mp3s, etc. The RIAA won't touch many of those. They're just getting bad press, that's all.

Sadly, CuteMX (great software, stupid name) lockedd their users out yesterday. They have central servers and are could be sued. Besides, they had a lot of people trading movies. Well, corrrection: they had a lot of people talking about trading movies; the vast majority had connections too slow to succeed in actually getting any movies.

In spite of my respect for Justin Frankel, Gnutella is more interesting politically than as an actual program. None of the clients seemed to be easy to use, or very effective at searching. Also, Gnutella lacks chat and the ability to browse other users lists. The whole idea is to see what people with tastes similar to your taste like.

BTW, a nice looking Napster client will be released today: Naphoria's audioGnome. It has resumeing, the ability to view multiple servers at once, the ability to search across multiple servers. Joe Bob says check it out. No, no Linux client yet.

I am a geeky guy, and I took an "Advanced Web page design" class. (I didn't expand my knowledge any, but that is another story.)

There was only one girl in the class. Partly because all the chicks at my school are stupid, partly because they don't want to be seen in that class. It is embarrassing (or frustrating for their feeble little minds) for the girls at my school to be in there.

Another point: if someone argues that there are a lot of girl geeks, then why do all those guys have to sit around creating Lara Croft?

Geeky girls, I think, are stuck. They don't want to enter a predominantly male field, or they don't like what other people will think about them.

I could be totally off target, too.

Webster Groves Computer School, a public elementary magnet school where I got my 1st thru 5th grade education, has just put 30 new Dells (complete with full, high-speed Internet access) running Windows 98 (hey, you can't have everything) in each of their 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classrooms. As it turns out, my own 4th grade teacher, Sue Gibson is still teaching there and I had the opportunity to hear about her experiences with the new equipment (as well as letting me play with the new toys).

The students are eating it up! Which causes the teacher to just plain love it. Remember when we used to do reports on posterboard with magazine cutouts pasted to it? These kids are putting together Powerpoint slide shows that look better than what I see at work. Heck, their class website is more interesting than any college classes I've taken.

And these aren't the select district Poindexters, either - they're just regular kids. The method for getting in the school is based on a lottery rather than test scores.

Now, it's not all peaches and cream. There are problems with kids going to "unauthorized" (read: PORN) sites, but from what I understand, it's only from students who are otherwise known for getting in trouble. In other words, the kid most likely to check out penthouse.com is the one who got in trouble last week for bring his dad's pocketknife to show off.

The way I understand this, it's all about guidance and supervision. Remember Star Trek? The prime directive was not to interfere with "primitive" races because a radical change in technology could seriously screw up their values. The same goes for computers in the classroom. You can't just plop a 10-year-old in front of a PIII and expect him to become Linus.

Computers are a teaching tool. There was math class before there were calculators, or slide rules for that matter. There was school before there were books. There was school before there was even paper! Ancient Roman schools had children writing on wax tablets. Then came paper and children used it to take notes on and store. Then books allowed us to store, read and recycle information. Computers are simply the next big teaching tool, and hence, belong in EVERY classroom, along with the propper guidance.

I've always wondered: "now" that we have incredibly powerful telescopes, wouldn't be possible to take closeup pictures of the moon, for example where people have landed (and/or left some stuff)? (it has been already asked if it would be possible to track the moon considering its relative fast speed).

It sure would put an end to all of those conspiracy theories... or maybe confirm them. ;-)

I was wondering if anyone else would mention the PowerHouse 4GL from Cognos. I used it under VAX/VMS for several years in the 90s, and it met our needs fairly well. I didn't really feel that it lived up to the supposed benefits of a 4GL, at least in terms of extending programming capability to "non-programmers." We did have a handful of users who could write ad-hoc Quiz reports, but writing Quick screens or QTP runs was definitely in the programmers-only realm.

We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.
