Re:realistic alternative power source for vehicles
..And of course, the lovely thought of driving around in my car with a nice tank of hydrogen fueling me, knowing that I'm just a wreck away from a hindenburg style disaster. "Most deaths were not caused directly by the fire but were from jumping from the burning ship. Those passengers who rode the ship on its descent to the ground survived. Some deaths of crew members occurred because they wanted to save people on board the ship."

"The Nature of Hydrogen:
* Hydrogen is less flammable than gasoline. ...
* Hydrogen disperses quickly. ...
* Hydrogen is non-toxic. ...
* Hydrogen combustion produces only water. ...
* Hydrogen can be stored safely. Tanks currently in use ... have survived intact ... including being shot with six rounds from a .357 magnum, detonating a stick of dynamite next to them, and subjecting them to fire at 1500 degrees F."

Both websites refer to the causes of the Hindenburg disaster, pinning the blame on the blimp material for the largest part of the fault.
The Hindenburg really wasn't a hydrogen disaster, it was an airship disaster that happened to also involve hydrogen. -
Re: You reinforce my point
Try this: Gasoline is about $1/kg and hydrogen is ~$6/kg (source). However, hydrogen provides over 120 MJ/kg energy (source) whereas gasoline provides 43 MJ/kg energy (source: wiki gasoline). So for hydrogen to be cost-comparable to gasoline, gas needs to hit $5/gallon. Which is....get this. Europe. Today.

Re:veggie oil?
If we were talking hydrogen, you'd be complaining about using up our water for fuel.
Well, not really. The process of combustion with hydrogen is...water.
http://www.hydrogennow.org/Facts/FAQs.htm#10 explains nicely. -
This is old news.

Honda has had the Honda FCX out for awhile now. There is dozen or so people who is driving one.

Re:FP BS!
Not a scientist, but...
Most people's impression about the nature of hydrogen comes from the film of the Hindenberg burning (not blowing up)... The Hindenberg was such a disaster because the skin was coated with iron oxide and aluminum paint, not because that hyrdogen is so inherently dangerous.

Hydrogen does not burn without the presence of oxygen, so just like gasoline the process is self-limiting by the amount of oxygen in the vicinity of the fuel. The only way an explosion occurs is if the fuel is vaporized and widely dispersed before ignition - but the same is also true of flour in a grain storage facility, and we don't ban use of flour. -
denver fuel cell powers fire station
Denver gets around the explosion issue by put its demonstration fuel cell station at a fire station!

sorry.. I was wrong...
I acted on what I was constantly told growing up, so I will appologize here and say I was wrong about my assertion.
However, I would like to point out that the research here does state this:
The hydrogen burned quickly, safely, above the occupants. When the escaping hydrogen was ignited by the burning skin of the airship, it burned far above the airship, and was completely consumed within 60 seconds of the ignition. During this period of time, the airship descended to the ground from the 150-foot docking tower.
So, the assertion that the Hydrogen DID NOT burn seems to be incorrect. When the fire started there was no way that the hydrogen could get out quickly enough to NOT set the hydrogen on fire, but fast enough that it moved away from the ship.
I still personally don't think it's a good idea though to put that my gassous hydrogen in one place. -
Re:Too Bad Commercial Airship Development Has Stal
It's understandable that investors would be a little jittery at the thought of a German airship

Hydrogen = Unsafe (Hindenburg?!?)Or not. That depends on whether one looks at spectacular video or at the facts behind it.
In terms of undeserved bad raps, H2 safety must be at the top the all-time list. Hydrogen burning was *NOT* the disaster of the Hindenburg.
I hope that
/.ers and the general public can appreciate how safe hydrogen really is in comparison to other fuels.How about some higher profiles to hydrogen safety demonstrations?
Anything that burns has safety hazards. H2 safety with proper engineering will be far safer than the gasoline bombs we now haul around under our vehicles.
