Re:Best attribute
There are plenty of people stuck in the eighties still. Just look at the popularity of emacs and vi around these parts.
"Stuck?" If it works for those people, why are they stuck? The last release of vim (vi's modern incarnation) is numbered 7.2 and was released on 2008-08-09. The Dutch developer (who works at Google) accepts donations which go straight to a charity fund active in AIDS-plagued South-Uganda.
Totally stuck, alright.

Re:Technically true thoughAnd then some...
gives this: Vim is Charityware. You can use and copy it as much as you like, but you are :help uganda
encouraged to make a donation for needy children in Uganda. Please see |kcc|
below or visit the ICCF web site, available at these URLs:
http://iccf-holland.org/
http://www.vim.org/iccf/
http://www.iccf.nl/ Just in case anyone is interested (and can't use vim).
"Charityware" - can you imagine them mooks in Seattle trying to pronounce that. -
While it may be free
It is also charity ware. The website asks for donations to a charity that helps children in Uganda.

Re:I just want to say thanks.
Vim is charity-ware, please donate.

Re:Amazon
Why give the money to him though? If you really want to give money to someone, you might as go with a charity. It's also fucking annoying that this shit crops up on every single book review on Slashdot.

I second this.
I even donated a little to the charity he suppports. If anyone isn't aware, I know it's hard to miss the splash message, but vim is charitywre. Bram wants doantions to be sent to iccf holland which are used to help children in Uganda. I use this editor every day that I use a computer (which is pretty much every day) and I think it's great that Bram uses his work to help others less fortunate.

Cream (for Vim)
Indeed Vim rocks! Not only does it have blinding speed, but with some effort, it can be made to do almost anything. I'll respond specifically to each feature requested:
- aimed at HTML/XHTML/CSS/JavaScript/JSP/XML -- Vim recognizes over 375 languages
- CVS integration -- Available
- stellar UTF-8 support -- Yes, plus at least 35 other encodings
- correctly recognizes and highlights HTML, JSP, JS, and CSS within a single file -- No, not yet. This gets discussed on the lists often though.
- does some rudimentary auto-completion -- Yes, far beyond rudimentary
- is easily configurable -- Yes, perhaps even too configurable
- runs on Win2k (oy vey) -- Yes, plus Unix, BSD, Apple, Amiga, OS/2, and others
- supports bookmarks of various kinds -- Yes
- supports code collapsing -- Yes, called folding, even supports nested
- affordable -- Can't beat Free! Even better, you can donate to a great cause
.
However...
...although other posters have already pointed out various scripts you can add to give you the features you want, you can also try my pre-assembled package of scripts for Vim, Cream. It makes Vim keyboard shortcuts nearly CUA-compliant (Ctrl/Alt/Shift + letter) and otherwise masquerades Vim as a more familiar feeling power text editor. Most long-time Vim users barely recognize it, but Apple/Windows users will find it much more familiar than the sometimes cryptic Vim.

vim!For those of us who - for whatever reason - aren't going to go help people ourselves, you could do a lot worse than helping one of our own who asks - very politely.
Bram Moolenaar, the author/maintainer of the amazing vim visited a school/community center/development center in Uganda a few years back, and when he returned to Europe, he, along with others, setup a charity in the Netherlands to support the center. Those who use and enjoy vim (and those who don't!) "are encouraged to make a donation for needy children in Uganda." Go to the International Child Care Fund and make a donation, or at least click through their Amazon affiliation links next time you buy something from there. That way, it doesn't even cost you anything...
Wouldn't it be nice to Slashdot a charity with donations?
