    Apple has always bad luck when it comes to naming things. Does anyone remember the whole Carl Sagan/Butt-Head Astronomer deal? http://idiot-dog.com/humor/butthead.html

    Of course, they've had problems with the Beatles since day one, due to Apple Records. Initially, there was an agreement that Apple Computers could use the Apple name only for computer products--not music-related enterprises.     Let's not forget the Power Mac 7100 incident involving Carl Sagan. Interesting little story for those who've never heard it before.

    IIRC, the first-gen Power Macs were internally codenamed "PDM" (6100), "Carl Sagan" (7100), and "Cold Fusion" (8100). Carl Sagan got wind of this via a MacWEEK article about the forthcoming machines, and promptly complained that Apple was using his name to promote their products without his consent-- a rather nebulous accusation since it was an internal codename never intended to be made public. Some say Sagan was also miffed about having his name included with two scientific frauds, Piltdown Man and cold fusion. I don't recall if lawyers came into play at this point, but they definitely did when Apple changed the 7100's codename to "BHA," widely rumored to stand for "Butt-Head Astronomer."

    Sagan sued and lost, but the 7100's codename was again changed to "LAW," rumored to stand for "Lawyers Are Wimps."

    Many years ago, Apple was developing a new computer under the code name "Carl Sagan". Well, Carl Sagan learned of this and had his lawyers send a C&D letter to Apple. So Apple changed the code name to "Butt-Head Astronomer". A few details are here.

    Maybe Lindows should be named Butt-Head CEO?

    Something like that has happened - Apple had an internal project code named "Sagan" - when the Carl Sagan people started threatening legal action, they changed the project name to Butt Headed Astronomer.

    Well, according to the court he lost the case ;-)

    Apparently it counted as a statement of opinion and didn't directly impune his professional standing; and it was clearly satirical, and hence protected by first amendment protection.
