Re:Bad design....
No, you don't, but a 4 year old isn't going to know that. There's an emergency call button on the lockscreen (screenshot below):

Re:You're touching it wrong
Affects iPhone 6 models as well. It's why there are instructions on fixing both models.

Re:Metered connection
Apple is doing this now too. I was listening to music in iTunes and it exited. WTF?! I couldn't relaunch because it was installing an update. Here is a link to instructions on how to disable that behavior:

Another use case I can think of where auto OS updates are a bad idea is you have some professional application that isn't compatible or is not stable on the new OS or integrates with hardware that doesn't have solid drivers for the next addition. These forced for your own good updates seem to be causing a lot of people to have a bad day. I'm lucky enough to only be slightly inconvenienced. This trend is really unsettling IMO. On a phone that is basically an appliance I don't really care. On my main computer I consider it a problem. I'm still holding out that I will never have a Windows 8-10 install in my environment. With any luck maybe no more Microsoft ever again. Upset level with Apple is rising and the outlook doesn't look so good.

Re:in other news
nobody attacks apple for agressivly pushing their updates.
You must be new here.
On my ipad almost every time i pick it up there is a screen about an IOS update. i say 'sod off' and it takes me to my lock screen code page. unless you are paying attention its not clear that putting in your code will enable it to do the update, you have to press another button to stop this madness.
Liar. I sit here typing this on my iPad 2, running iOS 7. It is eligible for iOS 9.2.3 (or whatever the most recent rev. Is); bit I don't CHOOSE to upgrade. About once every few weeks, I see a REMINDER that the new version of iOS is ready for download. I DISMISS the Dialog by clicking "Not Now" or whatever, and THAT IS THE END OF THAT.
and on my machine at work - continunal messages sat in the top right over updates, with no other option than 'remind me tomorrow'- how about 'remind me never?'
I get ONE message per day, max. And you can make them go away forever like this. I found that in 5 seconds on Google. Why couldn't you?
Now go away, asshole. -
Re:ARGH
Microsoft is tired of supporting old ass insecure software. They can't rely on people who won't run patches, so they are going the Apple route. They know what you need, just submit and deal with it.
What do you mean "Going the Apple route?"
Just like everyone else, Apple defaults their Updates to automatically download and install, but not only do they do a much better job of telling you what they are doing; but they also make it extremely easy to not have automatic updates.
Quit assigning the name "Apple" to just any-old-thing you don't think is right. -
Re:That's special...
Problem with the constant updates and the way Apple is now almost forcing the updates on users is that as in my case just when I have fixed the problems that previous updates to Yosemite caused to some of the software I use (i.e. made the applications completely stop working), they are now more or less forcing El Capitan on me. If and when I do upgrade, it will be a few versions in as earlier versions have caused numerous problem for many people in Mavericks and Yosemite). There must be a way to turn off software update (I am willing to take my chances) as there used to be, but Apple have made it hard to find that option. There are constant update nags that appear in a distracting way at the top right of the monitor. Very annoying...
That was hard. I almost broke a sweat searching for a whole minute through two search results to find the better explanation.
;-)
Yes the nags are annoying; but at your own risk, it is good to see that Apple provides a nice, GUI way to stop the madness... -
Re:Apple stagnation
Funny, how their were no mic issues before, when it was a third party app.
Not to mention that some jail-breakers were able to figure out exactly how Siri was disabled on the iPhone 4 and re-enable it and - surprise surprise, Siri works just fine on the 3GS and 4.
