Forget the Segway. Better wheelchairs!
The guy that designed the segway also designed the iBot which is basically a wheelchair that can "walk" on 2 or 4 wheels. This includes the easy navigation of stairs.
Forget about copying the segway...
Copy this device! It goes for about 20k... how many people do you think can really afford this thing? This device allows wheelchair-bound people to practically walk again!
Drugs go generic... but I fear this thing will be too pricey for a long time to come. -
Beyond Segway
A lot of people may not know this, but the segway, in addition to being a means of transportation, is also a testbed for technologies used in Dean Kamans latest invention, the iBOT. Its a new wheelchair thats being tested by the FDA, but most of its technology has been proven in the non medical(meaning it didnt have to be tested by the FDA) Segway HT. The iBOT is a revolutionary wheelchair with that can climb stairs and raise a person up to normal eye-level. link link link link

Could this be the future web site of IT?A Johnson and Johnson web site that is not completed yet.
The site is called "Independence Technology" or could that be short for IT? Remember that Johnson and Johnson is going to be selling the iBot for DEKA.

My guess: dynamically balanced unicycleSome people are saying IT is a personal hovercraft, which would fit the "re-architecting cities" comment, but that would be hard to demonstrate in an office...
I saw this wheelchair demoed on a TV profile of Kamen some months ago... it's amazing... it can basically stand-up on two small wheels, and using gyros and a CPU, can dynamically balance itself, even if someone shoves it as hard as they can...
So, some sort of personal transportation device that doesn't quite belong on the road, or on the sidewalk is my gut feeling...
Of course if you can balance on two wheels, why not one? A powered, dynamically balanced, untippable unicycle would account for the laughter at the secret demos!
Hell, if that's not what IT is, it should be!
Reminds me of that "Where the hell are the flying cars?" ad.

Miniture Ibot
2 in fact: one for each foot.
Add a hand-held controller and we're off to the races.
Funny how easy it was to guess.
Here's a Pic and info of the IBOT. Add some contempary chips, and it's easy to imagine.

IBot
I wanted to see what it looked like; didn't notice any pictures in the Wired article (not unusual, since it was about the man, not his inventions per se). I found these, and it doesn't look awkward at all, it actually looks very agile, this thing is amazing.
