Re:Compare vs. Britain ...
I don't dispute a person's right to privacy in their home. However, my understanding of the article is that the objection comes from the taking and use of pictures of a public setting, ie people sitting in a sidewalk cafe.
Here: "It should be borne in mind that the protection of privacy afforded by article 9 of the Civil Code is quite wide, since it operates both in a public and in a private place ..."
I thought it provides an interesting contrast to the rhetoric in the recent /. discussions on British CCTV surveilance of public streets. -
Re:Did they pay their taxes
More true than you know. Whereas the U.S. is personified by an old geezer wearing a weird stovepipe hat, France is personified by Marianne, a rather attractive lady. For a long time, her official likeness was based on various sexy Frenchwomen, starting with Brigitte Bardot and ending with Laetitia Casta. Since 2002, alas, the model has been anonymous.

Re:Repaid already?
"The taking of the Bastille on July 14, 1789 symbolized the end of the French monarchy and the beginning of the Republic, leading to the birth of a democracy in France."
This strongly suggests that the French monarchy, which did not share the "ideals" of a republic, came to the aid of the colonies and not the Republic. From the French embassy

Working time reduction
Perhaps this would be a reason why some countries have decided to reduce working hours?

Logically,if we just bulldoze the Rocky Mountains we could reduce our dependence on foreign heating oil and devastate French agriculture at the same time.
I bet the oil companies know how the Rockies keep the US dependant on heating oil and that is why they started this puppet organization.

Re:FrenchReally?
No threat? As far as I'm concerned, it's 1939 and Poland's about to be overrun.

The French are cowards

Not such a good name for a distro......especially if you want to convey security. Do you remember your late 18th century European history? Right. The Bastille in France was invaded and destroyed, prisoners were liberated, and the monarchy was overthrown by that terrible harbinger of death, La Guillotine.
I'd hate to see any Bastille Linux-oriented viruses or trojans. Maybe there will be one which triggers on July 14th of every year and echoes on the screen: "Liberté! Egalité! Fraternité!"
