Re:With holographic storage and folding color dispas elusive as a google search...
you're an idiot.

Re:You can already *BUY* 300GB discs
Errm, if you look at the pricing its not 300 dollars for a disk but $180.00, (see this). Still thats quite a bit of money.
-
You can already *BUY* 300GB discsInPhase Technologies have a system that writes 300GB holographic discs and they have a roadmap that goes to 1.6TB.
They cost 18K for the drive and $300 for the discs.
They are expensive now, but when they drop they will make it worthwhile.
All of the Simpsons, the Complete Bach, the complete Mozart, the complete Beethoven all together on one disc.

Re:This is the main use for holographic storage
Yet another web designer who would fail the test after lesson 1.
Disable javascript to see why.
How confident am I meant to be about trusting these assholes with retrieval of my data in 25 years when I'm having difficulty retrieving the data on their website now? -
This is the main use for holographic storage
Archive is what holographic storage is targeted at. The movie and broadcast industry is pretty geared for it - Right now they have to keep copying tapes and hard drives over and over because they either suffer bit rot, or hard drives crash. The holographic media from Inphase Technologies (Drives were running on display this week at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show in vegas) has a 50 year archival life. A lot of people look at the price of the drive (18k) and say, "I'll never backup my pron collection to that" and miss the point that nobody gives a rats ass about your pron collection, but for real archive purposes, people will fork out the money to preserve large, expensive content assets.

WRONG - Holographic has a 50 year life
Using the same processes used to certify other media, holographic media has been proven to 50 years, it DOES NOT suffer the same bit rot as CD/DVD. Hence, being able to call it archival grade. Read the papers.

Re:1 CM larger?
On Inphase's web site they have a PDF file with details on their media.
http://www.inphase-tech.com/products/professional/ download/DataSheet_MEDIA.pdf
You don't have to worry about inserting it into an ordinary CD/DVD drives because it's in a 135x153x11 mm cartridge. This is exactly the same dimensions of existing MO cartridges. I suppose one could cram one of their holo-cartridges into a MO drive or maybe if one had one of those ancient CD-ROMs that used a caddy...
I like this from the PDF: "Recording Format: Phase Conjugate Polytopic Holographic". Not sure what that means, exactly, but it sounds cool.

inphase press release
This article from the company in the link seems to show different numbers:

Me thinks the other article is badly misquoted. -
Re:I'll wait
I'll wait
...until they come out with holographic-RW
From this pdf:
InPhase is developing a rewritable material and
system to expand the technology into more
traditional data storage markets. -
That's not interesting
but this and this is. Why did the summary only link to the press release and not the info? I had to browse the site a little get some interesting stuff.
And for my fellow PDF viewing overlords, read this this and this. -

I think that this is a lot more interesting, as although we have huge hard disk capacity as we are, we dont have large removable disk capacity (unless you get a removable HD caddy) -
Information about US company's holo drive
InPhase Technologies
I wonder who has the patents on this technology. -
Holographic storage is the real answer .
Where is the American ingenuity ?
Why are we dependent on Japanese technology which to me is very average.(maybe because we don't have as many electronic manufacturers like we once did.)
DVD technology is limited and is slow coming.
Whats the alternative ?
How about holographic storage.
Latest Blue laser recorder shipped. -
