And about the original "1984"---
1984 Apple Commercial - The Making of a Legend, originally from Owen Linzmayer's book, The Mac Bathroom Reader.
And for you Trivial Pursuit buffs: the name of the hammer-wielding blonde is Anya Major, an obscure British actress who was a discus thrower. -
Re:iPods predicted in 1984?
So you can compare, here's a link to the original commercial, which you can see didn't have an iPod in it.
;o)(As has been mentioned, Apple digitally added the iPod in the 2004 version of the commercial.)

Re:Jan. 22, 1984
The spot aired on Jan. 22, 1984, the date of that year's Super Bowl.
...although technically, it also aired for the first time on December 15, 1983, at 1:00 AM (the sign off slot for KMVT 11, Twin Falls, Idaho), so that it would be elligable to receive awards the following year.

1984 advertisement historyOther posters have provided links to the famous 1984 advertisement, but I haven't seen anyone post the history of the ad. It almost wasn't shown at all because the board didn't like it at all.
Here is a good writeup on how the advertisement came about and what the initial internal reaction to the ad was in late 1983.

Re:Classic ad updated, too!
The girl is Anya Major, and she was chosen in part because she was the only one who didn't get dizzy spinning the hammer around. There is more general information about the commercial here.

Re:Tron!
Thankfully, there's a MAME download for those who can't imagine it...

Hang on...the CoCo 3 didn't have the chiclet keys, and there were nice third party keyboards even for the 1 and 2. (For that matter, there have been PClone keyboard adapters for CoCos for some time; anyone wanting one now should check out Mark Marlette at Cloud-9.
