Re:I miss the pressure AMD used to put on Intel
This review:
http://it-review.net/article/hardware/cpu/Intel_Core_i7_980X,_Core_i5_650_and_Core_i3_530_review&3These processors:
Core i7-980X
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115223Core i5-650
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115220Core i3-530
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115222Notice the performance of the 980X over the other two. There's no more than a 3x performance increase in media encoding. Compare the price tag differences, ranging from a six-fold increase over the i5 and an eight-fold increase over the i3.
The kind of premium Intel charges for the "Extreme Edition" brand is ridiculous. Based on those specs alone and knowing the price of the two lower models, I wouldn't expect to be charged anything more than $600 for the i7.

Speaking of high IOPS and SSD
Until recently to get decent performance in a reasonable size you needed a huge SAN with hundreds of spindles. Now that you can get stuff like The OCZ Z-Drive, the PhotoFast G-Monster and of course the Fusion-IO IODrive Duo that's not really necessary unless you also need >6TB. The 50 microsecond latency is just bonus.
And oh, joy, there will be more. The SAN vendors who are betting their next year's revenue on those $million+ performance SAN's better get a plan B, and quick.

Is there any hope?
I mean, I've been checking out the reviews out there... For example, http://theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=39580

I'm not sure this "HD2900XT" thing will be repairable. I think that perhaps AMD's announcement that they're targeting best-buy in high-end is more valid. Although that one might have been said in pure desparation.... -

Thanks, but...
There isn't really much in the first four pages that we didn't already know from The Inquirer. I also recall them linking to a recent and thorough benchmarking of the HD2900 XT by it-review.net - don't think that was a hoax, so this wouldn't be the first review of the R600 by any measure.
84 degrees Celsius actually isn't that bad - my MSI 7950GX2 starts throttling at 122C (never gets above 85 maxed out, less than 60C idle), and the 8800GTX in the system I'm building for a client throttles at 127C (also never gets near the double digits).
It's just like Tom's Hardware, plenty of fluff pages to increase adviews, and wasting our time while the site is slashdotted (or at least feigning it).
