I reckon this is a scammers honeypot
At least to catch people who deserve to be scammed. Funny how spam and scam are intimately linked.
Try this on for size. Note none of this stuff is the least bit reliable so don't send any money, we'll bill you...
Joey Skaggs taking prankstering to a higher level: Art!
and a prank or business idea: hunting for bambi
Warning: I think the concept is a sick reflection of some sections of our society. It ain't funny, or at least, if this is a scam, the customers deserve to be ripped off. -
How can you identify Blogs?
blog sites?
geocities
Tripod
words like "blog" "weblog", "last summer I went on vacation to" etc
The above mentioned sites can have very useful information. I whole heartedly agree about news having lowsy sources (see Joey Skaggs' website
Even if you use search criteria, what's to prevent some doehead from getting his own domain name? (It's only about $8 from a good name registry service)
Personally, I think it may be useful to have a blogging search, but it will be near impossible to remove many blogs besides the ones listed on major websites. -
Re:"Whata band"
I'm surprised to see so many posts slagging McLaren and the Sex Pistols for "media manipulation" -- as if it's a bad thing.
Media manipulation of any kind is a cool hack.
(Before you flame, note that I am not referring to media coersion or state-sponsored propaganda in this sense as "media manipulation".)
Media manipulation that results in a new scene or cultural change is a truly great hack!
Media manipulation can even be an artform unto itself -- for example check out this old-school media artist.

Credibility
I'm getting far too cynical in my old age, but I just don't believe it. First, as the article pointed out, the odds are huge. I'd like to think this was a scientist teaching his daughter how easily the foolish media is manipulated. Eg. Like Joey Skaggs does. The meteorite in the picture appears to be about the size of her 14 year old thumb. She states: "I saw it fall from above roof height". We don't know her height, and the distance to the roof, so we can't calculate the arc tangent. Let's say she was staring into the sky with her head tilted at a 60 degrees angle upwards. (an odd angle for a head to be at). Also, her head was also staring in the CORRECT direction (360 degrees) and SPOTTED the meteorite, and still it hit her?
Hmmm. Kids do like to exaggerate when something happens to them. Possible, but astronomically unprobable. -
wait wait wait is this a prank?Hah, I just realized that the rocket science expert they interviewed has the name Frisbee.
Hmm, anyone know what Joey Skaggs is up to lately ?

For those who can't remember
Here is Joey Skaggs's website. And here is the Soloman Project, the hoax in question.

They had better one's last year...
The current list isn't as good as C|net's top 10 list from 1999 which contains a 1993 USENET hoax by Joe Skaggs (sp? Is it a word?).
Joe Skaggs has been hoaxing the mainstream media for years and is one of NYCs most loved and hated citizens. Here's a retrospective of some of his hoaxes going as far back as the sixties. My favorites are dog meat soup, the geraldo hoax and coma cocoon

What the hell is he apologizing for????
This man should be commended and held up for the world to see! He pulled a media hack that got a whole cable network show devoted to it. Only Joey Skaggs has done better at this than I know of, and that is because Joey has been pulling these media hacks for years!

Re:The _Real_ Hack
Exactly. They are almost on par with Joey Skaggs. Read the one about "A Cathouse for Dogs".

SlashDOT moderators: please read.
It has come to my attention that Joey Skaggs will be hosting the 14th annual April Fools day parade in New York. Perhaps many readers would be interested in attending.
On the serious side, I realize SlashDOT has never been about professional journalism, but I would expect you to atleast TRY. I am always reminded of the story claiming Hotmail/Microsoft's refusal to deactivate the e-mail address used in the util-linux trojan. This story was completely false and after several posts explaining that, it simply vanished from the site. Although SlashDOT is not a printed medium, you cannot simply hit the "Delete" button to make things right. You must first check your facts and also be willing to admit when you are wrong.
How does that rambling relate to this story? Well, reading through some other comments, I've noticed many readers (such as Kenneth Stephen) have taken the initiative to contact NSI directly and learned the errors were due to a problem with their upgrade. This blatant lack of professionalism is scary and even worse, is plastered accross redhat.com as we speak.
