And even that much assumes that you have at least one parent home all the time, and free to pay attention to the kids at least 4 or 5 hours a day which rules out any real job, even remote ones.
So you don't think it's good the have a parent at home? They used to call kids like that latchkey kids. And no it doesn't mean no real job, but I guess you don't consider raising kids as a real job. I bet my brother-in-law would argue that with you. Home schooling children are getting more and more popular, and it doesn't even require a child's parent to stay home, instead a group of families may get together and they'll decide who teaches. With a groups of families the children will get their socializing.

Re:Unconstitutional? No, it does not. You do not get to decide games are or are not appropropriate for someone else's kid. Ever.
Exactly! I agree with you here 100%! The problem is, how do you know its the parents making that decision? You either think that this law forbids the USE of these games by minors or you like red herring. Either way, all this law would do is make it so the parent gets to decide if their child should play these games or not. By removing these laws, you are taking that responsibility AWAY from the parents and giving it to their kids!
These laws do not provide or safeguard anyone's freedom or rights of any kind. Parents already have ultimate and total authority over their kids' gameplay, and nothing the government can do will increase that.
Uh, I'm afraid you are wrong here. This law would do exactly that! While it is not perfect, it does ensure that kids are not out buying games without parental knowledge. I did stuff my parents didn't know about. Didn't you?
Alcohol has proven, objectively demonstratable harmful effects. Video games do not, as every single judge in these cases has noted. I realize you "don't give a shit what researchers say", but they do, as they should. Rational people don't ignore scientific research just because it doesn't tell them what they want to hear.
Right! Rational people do NOT ignore scientific research. So if scientific research says that violent video games are harmful to children, then the government is completely within their right to ban the sale to minors, right? OK, how's this:An early study on the effects of video games on children found that playing video games had more positive effects on children than watching television. A conference sponsored by Atari at Harvard University in 1983 presented preliminary data which failed to identify ill effects. More recent research, however, has begun to find connections between children's playing of violent video games and later aggressive behavior. A research review done by NCTV (1990) found that 9 of 12 research studies on the impact of violent video games on normal children and adolescents reported harmful effects. In general, while video game playing has not been implicated as a direct cause of severe psycho-pathology, research suggests that there is a short-term relationship between playing violent games and increased aggressive behavior in younger children (Funk, 1993).
Because it is likely that there is some similarity in the effect of viewing violent television programs and playing violent video games on individuals' aggressive behavior, those concerned with the effects of video games on children should take note of television research. The consensus among researchers on television violence is that there is a measurable increase of from 3% to 15% in individuals' aggressive behavior after watching violent television. A recent report of the American Psychological Association claimed that research demonstrates a correlation between viewing and aggressive behavior (Clark, 1993).and HERE:
Fifty years' of research on violent television and movies has shown that there are several negative effects of watching such fare (see http://www.psychologymatters.org/mediaviolence.htm l). Because video games are a newer medium, there is less research on them than there is on TV and movies. However, studies by psychologists such as Douglas Gentile, PhD, and Craig Anderson, PhD, indicate it is likely that violent video games may have even stronger effects on children's aggression because (1) the games are highly engaging and interactive, (2) the games reward violent behavior, and because (3) children repeat these behaviors over and over as they play (Gentile & Anderson, 2003). Psychologists know that ea

Re:Cabbage Patch Finger Food
According to this, "no serious injuries have been reported".

Re:Left eye, right eye
Actually, a study of the American Association of Ophthalmology found no correlation between hand-eye dominance and baseball performance. I would guess that this holds true for other sports formerly thought to be affected by mixed dominance.

Look into the laser beam...... as you are driving at high speed on a narrow mountain road and tell us whether "...some physical damage could have been done..." to your vehicle. Yeah, chances are the laser beam wouldn't affect the vehicle directly.
The problem is that most of the other terms the article could have used (illuminated, painted, shined on, etc.) don't indicate the gravity of the danger this bozo was causing. Here is a brief article explaining some of the risks of even very low power lasers such as laser pointers (Class 3a laser generally with a power level of less than 5 milliwatts).

Re:I'd disagree somewhat...While I believe your intentions are in the right direction, creativity and imagination are not the same thing.
Creativity is the ability to produce, which would mean a child cobbling together a new toy, which some children accomplish taking apart several toys and making a new one, or creating a toy out of "non-toy" objects. Imagination just means the ability to think without boundaries. Meaning a child who pretends a train is a dog or that a patch of dirt is a lunar surface.
Some people are more creative than others and are most likely born that way.

Re:DO NOT INHALE HELIUM!
I suppose the Compressed Gas Association is spouting Urban Legends too.
Go tell the parents of this kid that inhaling helium is perfectly harmless.
Afterwards, you can talk to the parents of this other kid and tell them that helium-related deaths are an urban legend.
Feel free to read this first person account of what it's like to experience an urban legend.
Next time you post on slashdot, make sure you know what the hell you are talking about, and that you at least know how to spell "poisonous".

Georgia History - Repeat?
The controversy surrounding the Florida recounts and the 2000 Presidential election still simmers.
And recently a number of prestigious computer scientists came out on record as cautioning against all of the possible problems with electronic voting.
And still I hear recently of some effort where electronic voting is being made available to mall shoppers in Orange County.
But, Georgia?!?
For those with short memories, Georgia was to the 1800 election as Florida was to the 2000 election.
The current issue of The Atlantic Monthly has an interesting article about how Thomas Jefferson, then VP and President of the Senate, recorder of the votes, and a candidate in the election, was put into a conflict of interest when evaluating "irregularities" associated with the electoral votes from Georgia.

So what? Jupiter has spots
If people keep pointing it out, it is only a matter of time befor Jupiter starts developing a negative self-image. It is then only a matter of time before Jupiter stomps off sulking and slamming doors, taking it's vast gravitational field with it and leaving us to collect our own space junk.

Re:"hey mom"
What differentiates "antibacterial soap" from "soap"?
One word: Triclosan.
This is an antibacterial agent commonly used in all sorts of consumer products including deodorant soaps. If it's for your body and labeled "antibacterial" check the ingredients. It probably has triclosan. While it is certainly not an antibiotic per se, bacteria can grow resistant to it, producing more virulent strains. See here for a good discussion.
A recent article (too lazy to google again) recently suggested antibacterial and regular soaps do an equally good job of cleaning you of bugs anyway.

Re: Girls and mathI think this explains why girls do better than boys when younger, but worse later, in education.
I think this explains that you're trolling. Have you done any study of this problem? Based on my experience as a middle & high school math teacher, personal reading, and literature reviews, it's pretty clear that math gender issue can be explained very effectively by social factors. Peer pressure and media influence shunt girls into supporting roles and focus them on appearance over accomplishment.
