Re: Dreamcast instead?
A cheap network adapter would be nice. Although I have not tried it myself, there is a modem to modem method of establishing a PPP connection to your local network with the DC. Not ethernet but it should be a reliable connection.
For Divx I've only used dcmplay. I do not know the relationship if any between it and Pocket Divx but this one suffers from sync problems also.
Even with the obvious negatives of the DC, it was a very capable console and there is still a decent amount of development floating around for it. -
Back in *MY* day...
When I was in high school, the computer dept. had a policy *encouraging* us to try and break into the system, with the caveats of #1, don't delete everything if you somehow do break in, and #2, tell the staff about it if you do...
The network there used the 3Com ethershare system (this was '86 or '87), and we attempted to write a "brute force" password cracker in MS:Basic (basically just shelling to dos a bunch of digits starting at 00000000 and working up)... First time we got the program to run we were sitting around patting ourselves on the back in the way only 14 year old boys can, when lo and behold, about 2 minutes into the program running we found a backdoor. Turns out that you could log on as anyone with any password that started with "82". Talk about dumb luck.
We told the staff. They congradulated us. Called 3Com, who confirmed the backdoor and had to send someone out to patch the servers. They shut down the entire department for two days until that happened. No classes for over 200 students.
What a major pain in the ass for a school. Some of the teachers were really pissed about it, but the people in charge treated us like heroes.
I honestly can't imagine how my life would have been if I'd been stuck in a school like this kid. Of course, the open attitude of the school led to alot of the people I went to school with doing much more serious things and Getting busted (no time to find the real link).
Geesh, I just remembered I got an A on a project in 7th grade because we figured out you could load "*",4 when someone else was printing to steal their work on our Commodore pet network.
I think that kid needs to get a better school. -
Or, you could get all super marios at once
There is a program like MAME called PocketNES which is an NES emultator for the Gameboy Advance. This allows you to play hundreds of NES games on your GBA. Up to 200 NES roms will fit on a single GBA cartridge.
I personally prefer the opportunity to play the original rom, than a remake, even one that is identical from a gameplay perspective.
So to play NES roms on your GBA you need:
- A flash cartridge and linker (I bought mine at SuccessKH and got great service. I recommend the flash2advance USB linker with a 256 Mbit cartridge.
- PocketNES
- Nintendo Roms, a google search finds these quickly
Or if you don't have a GBA but still want to relive your childhood on linux, os x, or windows, grab your roms and then grab RockNES. -
Interweb Terminal
Among the other mentioned uses, the dreamcast will work wonderfully as an interweb device. If you can find the keyboard and mouse attachments, or use one of the adaptors that Mad Catz sold for ps2 keyboards, it's very simple to set up the included web browsing software and have at it. All dreamcasts came with a built in modem, and if you can find one, the broadband adaptors work well also. If you don't want to shell out the money for the expensive and rare broadband adaptor, you can still connect your dreamcast to the internet through your PC's broadband connection using the guide here for windows and here for linux.

Re:I'll pass. It really flimsy and stinks.
Yes, however most money in the U.S. has traces of illegal drugs on them. Does that mean that paper money should be illegal? By your logic it would be. Directly though, I am against companies, or anyone for that matter, making money off of emulators. They should be created and used b/c people have a genuine desire to run stuff they no longer can. I use RockNES for the simple pleasures of great old games like contra and mike tyson's punch out.

Re:That's the thingYou know, that's what endears me to Linux; the way it's users are _driven_ to make new uses out of it.
Yup, so much so that the win2k version of the guide was done first. But hey, this is slashdot, that doesn't matter does it?
