Classic Gaming Expo Guests Unveiled
Thanks to GamePro for running a new article discussing the recently announced guest list for the Classic Gaming Expo, to be held in Las Vegas on August 9th-10th. Honored guests include Franz Lanzinger (the designer of Crystal Castles), Warren Davis (the creator of Q*Bert), and Howard Scott Warshaw of Yars' Revenge (and E.T.!) fame, alongside more than 40 other classic gaming heroes, plus retro bleep soundtracks from the Micromusic crew. The Intellivision TV Game system we covered a few days ago will also be making its US debut at CGExpo. -
Q-Bert Creators Get Interviewed
Thanks to an anonymous reader for pointing to an Arcadeperfect.com interview with the three original creators of Gottlieb's classic arcade game Q*Bert. As the interview says, "Developed at Gottlieb's Northlake plant and released in 1982, Q*Bert is a lesson unto both the players and creators of video games. Designed and programmed by Warren Davis with sound by David Thiel and art by Jeff Lee, the antics of the game's title character and his nemesis, Coily, are a unique and vital touchstone in the history of gaming." And yes, there really was an unreleased sequel called Faster Harder More Challenging Q*Bert, quite apart from the rare Q*Bert's Qubes. -

SNK Vs Capcom Beta Draws Frenzied Fans
The Japanese arcade beta-test is in progress for SNK Vs. Capcom Chaos, the latest Playmore/SNK 2D fighting game, featuring both the Street Fighter and King Of Fighters characters, plus a whole host of guest stars from places as obscure as Samurai Shodown 64 and Red Earth/Warzard. There's now some good-looking videos of the beta-test up at the unofficial SNK-Capcom.com site, and an excellent hands-on impressions piece was posted at Insert Credit earlier in the week. Behind the frothing otaku, the Insert Credit article does sow some doubts, though: "..three years - probably more - in development or at least planning, and all they have to show for it is a standard Street Fighter engine with a predictable character roster"? -

Tron 2.0 - Hands-On With Master Control
Thanks to an anonymous reader for pointing to a new Gamespot hands-on preview of the forthcoming PC title Tron 2.0. This FPS, which we featured a preview of last month, now has a fully playable early version, and the writer says that "..from what we've seen, Tron 2.0 seems to do a great job of capturing the essence of the original film, thanks to its distinctive art design." The preview also draws attention to the unique weaponry, which, yes, has you controlling Discs Of Tron, but there's a possible dealbreaker caveat: "..the game seems to offer a few more jump puzzles than we'd prefer for a first-person action game." However, this Monolith-developed title, which also includes a lightcycle racing section, "..still shows promise" - watch for it later in 2003. -
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Bootleg
Thanks to an anonymous reader for pointing to a Magic Box article showing screenshots from the bootleg arcade game Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon 2003. Although there are few details on this title, it seems to be a South American-sourced Neo-Geo cartridge that doesn't actually have the actual movie license, but is 'borrowing' its name, along with most of the gameplay of King of Fighters 2001 and a bunch of backgrounds from the Street Fighter series. So many years after the Street Fighter II bootlegs, it's amazing to see people are still 'enhancing' arcade games for cultures where the 2D arcade fighter is still popular. -
Sega Remakes Phantasy Star, More For PS2
Thanks to an anonymous reader for pointing to a Gamespot story that indicates Sega's remakes of Phantasy Star, Fantasy Zone, and Monaco GP will be available for Playstation 2 this August in Japan. According to the article, "Phantasy Star: Generation 1 will feature enhanced graphics and sound, cover artwork done by members of Sonic Team, and a special making-of booklet. Fantasy Zone and Monaco GP will feature 3D elements as well as a making-of booklet." No word on a US release, or, indeed, on the Slashdot Games' most-wanted remake, a next-gen conversion of Power Drift. -
Metallica Videogame Planned
Thanks to an anonymous reader pointing to this Reuters/Yahoo story with more details on the newly announced Metallica-licensed videogame. Apparently, the 2005-due title, which other sources mention is a vehicular combat game, "has the ideas and the inspiration and the identity of the band behind it", and will, oddly, also feature art input from Geof Darrow of The Matrix/Hard Boiled/Big Guy And Rusty fame. Let's hope the title can improve on band-licensed games from Aerosmith , Journey, or even Iron Maiden? -

Street Fighter 15th Anniversary Site Opens
Thanks to an anonymous reader for pointing to a Gamespot story about a new official Capcom site for the 15th anniversary of the Street Fighter series. Although much of the actual page is in Japanese, celebrations apparently include a music competition where you can remix Street Fighter tunes, a cosplay competition where you dress up as your favorite SF character, and a traveling exhibition of Street Fighter art. Hard to believe it's been 15 years since the first Street Fighter, and 12 since the launch of Street Fighter II. -

Bradley Trainer Support in MAME 0.62
TheAlchemist writes "The Bradley Trainer was a modification to Atari's Battlezone arcade game created for the US Army to help train personel in the use of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. Supposedly only two of these machines were built, and of the two only one of them is known to exist today. The latest version of the arcade enumator MAME (0.62) has support for the Bradley Trainer, which hasn't been emulated until now. Pictures and more information of the Atari Bradley Trainer be found on this site, and screenshots of it running in MAME can be found here." -
Interview With Videogame Musician Lx Rudis
Bill Kendrick writes: "The Atari Times has a great (and long) interview with Lx Rudis, the musician behind a ton of video games, including some classics like the excellent port of KLAX to the Atari Lynx. He discusses how he got into the industry, what it was like back then, and how things have changed in the (console) generations since then."
