Google vs. MSN Search : Fight!
Microsoft is much too greedy - they won't ever come just close to Google's good reputation for untainted results. Microsoft stealthily places the 'paid results' in a manner so as to camouflage them and blend them in with the 'normal' hits. Then there's the cheezy ads and popups and generally skewed results nowhere near as relevant as Google's.
Try searching for scientology : Google's #2 and #4 hits goes to critics of that criminal organisation. MSN has operation clambake listed only as #6. -
Re:Digital Cameras + GPSFor that matter, do these high end SLRs encode information about shutter speed, aperature, focal length, etc into the image somehow? It would be cool to be able to examine the photos later and say "ahh okay, the ones I liked best all seem to have been shot at f/5.6 & 1/250, with the zoom lens at around 120mm -- I'll have to keep those settings in mind next time out...".
Actually, yes - they do. The EXIF fields on a Nikon D1 recorded image are loaded with data about the shot, including lens type used. On my half-baked photo website I have extracted these data and displayed them below the photos, in a simulated LCD display, for precisely the reason you mention.
There's a new version of the site in the works with GPS and map coordinates to go with the shots. On my photo journeys I've used a palmpilot to record a GPS trail with timestamps - these timestamps, when matched to the EXIF timestamps, produces an adequate shooting location marker. -
Re:Many people would thinkI could agree that -- the fee, 'prize' or whatever -- is mostly irrelevant in non-for-profit matters, but this is plainly obvious a revenue generating for-profit venture. Considering the vast user base of slashdork, there is potential sales volume in the thousands. So the $75 prize plus three units, is not just a bit cheap, it's an insult.
That's not the worst of it. The apparently random, unexplained exclusions of a handful of U.S. states (and the rest of the world) from participation in the contest. It would have been decent of Taco & co. to at least state why they feel so inclined to disregard the vast international community around slashdot. What's wrong with t-shirt designs from England, Austria, Belgium, Sweden?
The contemptous boilerplate legalese bullshit their reptilian lawyer pulled out of his ass, Taco can go cram up HIS ass. So much horseshit for seventy-five fucking bucks? Bah!

Re:T-shirt design, 3 colors, then 5You are entirely too generous!
You better get the vector art to go with the copyright. ;) -
T-shirt design, 3 colors, then 5Only too happy to contribute, so here goes - t-shirt design entry, all vector, should print easy.
It started as a 3-color design, but ended up as a 5-color design once I read the happy-fun and absolutely agreeable T&C's. Yay! Lawyers!

Waiting for concave, curving screen.I want something like this : (crappy lame untextured quick 3D doodle - a large monitor about the size of the Panasonic, but it should curve slightly inwards.
This would allow more monitors to be put side by side forming a giant panoramic screen. One benefit of such screens would be uniform eye-to-screen distance which should greatly reduce eye stress (since you won't have to refocus when looking at a different part of the screen.)
The actual optimal resolution of the screen should be determined by intended viewing distance : Individual pixels would still need to be discernable at a distance of about 3 feet, which makes me think the Panasonic resolution is only slightly under par.
The curving screen technology will almost certainly be available with the advent of OLED screens - perhaps even with semi-flexible, adjustable curvature.

Okay site, shoulda waited for it to mature a bit.Interesting idea. I thought about recording a commentary track for some of the movies I like and have researched and watched enough times to have something to say about. Then I heard a recording of my less than perfectly modulated voice and decided to forget about it!
However, there's apparently only one track on this site - I listened to the Groundhog Day track and it's certainly not bad. The guy admits he doesn't have filler commentary for every scene on the screen and the microphone rattle in the beginning reveals a limited amount of preparation, so for what it's worth it's certainly a nice first try. I been to Punxsutawney couple times, and love Groundhog Day the Movie, so it was rather interesting to listen to the guy's comments.
I think perhaps though it was premature to feature this site on slashdot - don't you think you should have waited until there was a few more tracks on there? As it is, it looks like a thousand people are gonna download the same track - it would have made a better impression if you had let it mature a bit. All the same, it would be nice to see more things like this. It's a good and creative way to 'share' stuff without pirating.
:)
