    Actually, I have a friend at Clear Channel, though he may not be after this. ;-)

    Here in Houston we have KPFT Pacific Radio and KUHF NPR.

    Indeed. KTRU is the campus station for Rice University. 50,000 watts, and their mission statement reads
    The mission of KTRU as a student organization and a 50,000 watt radio station is to educate the station membership, the greater Houston community, and the students of Rice University through its progressive and eclectic programming in the spirit of the station's non-commercial, educational license. Musically, KTRU programming will endeavor to solely feature genres and/or artists who are unexposed, or unavailable on, the Houston commercial radio dial. Non-musical programming will focus on content with clear merit and of practical value to a significant segment of the communities served by KTRU.

    Likewise, KPFT is the local Radio Pacifica affiliate whose mission statement includes
    In radio broadcasting operations to promote the full distribution of public information; to obtain access to sources of news not commonly brought together in the same medium; and to employ such varied sources in the public presentation of accurate, objective, comprehensive news on all matters vitally affecting the community.
    Either way seems like a good fit.

    a good one is at angryarab. It's from a non-religious arab guy who teaches middle eastern studies in california. He seems to know his business.

    FWIW I initially heard him on Flashpoints on Pacifica radio, that's produced out of KPFA in Berkeley and I hear it on KPFT 90.1 Houston, 89.5 Galveston

    The Pacifica radio network (the older but less recognized brother of NPR) has a program focused on technology. The hosts of the program brought were responsible for some of the first DMCA criminal and civil cases to make it to court.

    As is typical of Pacifica; the programming is legendary and edgy.

    Here's a creepy chunk of nearly-forgotten war news: with an eye towards Michael Powell's FCC potential actions against the bloated radio corporation, Clear Channel actually funded and hosted its own "Rally for America" pro war functions all over the place... Tom Delay even spoke at one. Here's one story on it. Plenty more on Google. This, clearly, is a situation of corporations manipulating the public, blar blar blar... It's extremely creepy, and it will be a lovely pattern for NewsCorp and the rest to emulate when we take on the Persians and Chinese in 2007.

    I dont really care that one weather guy is lying but Clear Channel on the whole is a horrible project that has obliterated good radio in Mpls/St. Paul. I've heard that their sprawl is only possible because they buy radio stations on the collateral of the other stations they own. If they can't keep buying and gutting stations they might implode from debt. Hence the cost cutting virtualization all around. Thanks for the Free Market, Michael "Totally Objective Communications Arbitrator Not His Poppa's Boy" Powell!

    Well, it's a bit unfair to tout noncommercial radio on this discussion. But Pacifica Radio is full of fresh surprising viewpoints, and my local Houston affiliate kpft.org actually plays great music. It gives you a sense of how fun dj's used to be.

    Can you say 91.7 KTRU (Rice University), 90.1 KPFT (Pacifica), or 88.7 KUHF (NPR, classical)? All good noncommercial Houston radio.
