Re:How bad will it be?
Yes, it is designed to route around damage, but this isn't damage - it's the whole network going down at once.
Take a look at this map and you'll see the problem... -
Potential european outtage map
Its good these guys keep on working even though they havent been paid for a long time (some in Holland since may). If KPNQwests network goes down well.. here is their map. Too bad most of the news around this is in english. -
Re:Ummm, am i missing something?
However, that previous article was about a link that used TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) and had multiple signals multiplexed to reach the 40Gbps mark. This signal is a pure 40Gbps signal, and they are multiplexed together using DWDM (Dense Wave Division Multiplexing) to reach a full 160Gbps. So yes, it is significant.
press release by KPNQwest, the company of the previous article.

Re:What is Qwest going to use this for?It isn't necessarily a case of what Qwest is going to use it for since technically Qwest doesn't own it! KPNQwest N.V. is a separate company from KPN and Qwest. KPN and Qwest just happen to be equal major shareholders in the company KPNQwest. The decisions of what they plan to do with the band width is decided by KPNQwest - not the two parent companies.
Anyway, since I work for KPNQwest, I think I'll shut up now...
