  1. Security should be an Enabler on Ask Slashdot: Dealing With University Firewalls? · · Score: 0

Among the key aspects of security that many none security techies (control-freaks and politicians) miss is the fact that Security is supposed to be an enabler. It isn't supposed to get in the way of business.
Aside from legal and compliance matters, security should never get in the way of day-to-day operations.
The business of a University of LEARNING. Internet is a vital and essential part of learning - draconian restrictions will never help security.

The "IT Guy" obviously hasn't segmented his network; nor has he done a threat assessment, risk assessment or analyzed the business requirements of Internet in a University!
When your "security" policy/procedures force users to work around, bypass, hack; then that security policy has FAILED.

At my old university, (1998), we got our useless IT Administrator sacked when the students and staff got together and made the case to the University Administrators (it was a fun meeting :-)). Unfortunately, University Administrators think they are running a prison, not an educational institute; however, they can't fight against the teachers and students! ;-)

In short; Terrorists aren't sofisticated. They like simple, easy, least defended targets that bring in the highest body count. These pratts don't even have a defineable/achievable military goal.

Their activities are aimed at carnage, destruction, self-promotion. Anything to undermining their governments to make way for themselves.

I wish someone would explain to me why roaming data (browsing internet while overseas) costs an extortionate amount more than when browsing it locally (especially when you are being served by the same damned carrier Vodafone in both countries). Do they bill for each individual router hop?!

I don't see how you can think that you have exhausted all your options in it.

Technically, after 20-years, you should either be at an Architect or Manager level - both of these open your career up to sideway shifts into other management style roles.

Personally, I think you've got to the stage in your career where you're no longer interested in learning EVERY NEW THING that turns up. You feel you've done enough 12-16hr days, that you shouldn't have to do that anymore (or perhaps you just have a crap manager that doesn't appreciate you and has you doing work that doesn't interest you) - basically, you want to move into management where you're telling other people what to do instead of being stuck with the day-to-day techy issues. You have the benefit of comming from the techy background and thus have an appreciation for the technology - You should do well.

You will miss some of the buzz you get from picking up a new IT "toy" and playing with it, but hopefully, you'll be paid enough not to care.

If you still aren't happy, start your own business. - Don't think about the technology, but rather the business domain that you know best - since you'll need to sell it to Business people and they hold the purse strings - not the snot-nosed pimple-faced linux geek in the corner.
