Re:New military branch needed
The problem isn't that voters couldn't control the government. It is that they are too lazy to do it. Picture about it.
I remember watching a document about some dutch philosopher some time. I didn't pay enough attention to remember his name but I remember that when the city he lived in got it's first amusement park, he was against it. He believed that such places only serve to make people politically passive. Turns out he was right.

Re:When asked about the new particle
Was it this guy?
(Forgive me mods, I posted this a week ago, but it was VERRRRY appropriate this time. No more, I promise!)

Re:Agreed, Very Interesting repercussions
All I could think of was that I really wish they called micro black holes that exist for minute fractions of a second something other than "black holes." It scares people unnaturally
What scares me unnaturally is the uncanny resemblance. We're doomed!

Re:Can we please talk about physics now?
Am I the only one who's sick of every news story and every discussion about the LHC deteriorating into giving the "end of the world" bullshit even more time of day that it doesn't deserve?
I think that in a way these rumours have increased awareness of the LHC.
I mean, just slashdot has 23 articles about the LHC as I write this. Articles like "Awesome Pics of CERN's Large Hadron Collider", "Why the LHC Won't Destroy the World", "Large Hadron Collider Sparks 'Doomsday' Lawsuit", "What Are Must-Sees For Open Day At the LHC?", "LHC Fully Documented Online", "Large Hadron Collider Goes Live September 10th", "One of the Coolest Places In the Universe", "Physics Nerds Rap About the LHC", "LHC Success!", "'Evolution of the Internet' Powers Massive LHC Grid", "LHC Flips On Tomorrow"...
Compare that to the Large Electron-Positron Collider (LEP); Admittedly shut down in 2000, but a total of two slashdot mentions, and not even in dedicated stories?
And I haven't seen a single comedy photoshop about the LEP.
Sure, it's a bit frustrating that the LHC became well known because of baseless apocalypse rumours instead of hard science, but would you prefer it didn't receive any publicity at all?
Were I an LHC physicist, I would prefer publicity and informing the public at the price of a few jokes on slashdot; to the project being unknown to the public and not the butt of any jokes.

Re:It's going to be OK they said
You say that as a joke, but it may be more likely than you think.
