Re:No more time travel!
Consider their budget: $7,000

As predicted: Monetize EVERYTHING
And... there it is, monetized. A 1995 VHS tape. If I fart in a grocery bag and quickly tie a knot in it, anyone want to buy?
Here are the locations, showtimes and ticket prices. Enjoy, but I won't be going.

Re:Lots of theater problems actually
I go to movies. I like them. I no longer though go to movies near my home.
I drive 30 mins to get to one of these theaters.
I get there on time. Get an assigned seat. No commercials. A few good trailers. Small theaters.
Respectful people and Ushers that give a shit.30 min of driving and a few extra bucks and suddenly I like movies again.

Re:Also:
Or more recently watch "In The Loop" if you can find it outside the UK.
It played around the US in Landmark Theatres, a big chain of independent film theaters. The whole movie had me crying from laughter and laughing in pain. I'm sure it will be available on Netflix soon.

Re:This Is Madness
Look at his other business ventures after broadcast.com. They're all massive dogs.
I don't know, I don't watch sports. The only other business I know he's in now is Landmark Theatres, which is my favorite cinema chain. I haven't gone to a movie there that was a dog, box office sales wise at least. Actually he may be bringing cinemas into the 21th century. While other chains send movies on film to theatres he uses broadband to send those available digitally.
Of course I didn't find out he owned Landmark 'til after watching movies I loved that only played there to begin with. I noticed some of the movies was played at traditional theatres after being shown there.
www.lucernesys.com Horizon: Calendar-based personal finance
It doesn't look like it works with investment portfolios, does it? I've searched for FOSS programs that do but haven't been able to find any offering something more than bank account balancing. Certainly nothing like Quicken or higher priced packages. And I can't justify the expense now.

Re:In light of his position...
In light of that perhaps we should conclude that all free thinking people should boycott his wonderful Dallas Mavericks and any of his other businesses.
Unfortunately it would be hard for me to boycott all of his businesses. I love to watch foreign and art movies that's aren't typically shown in regular movie theatres but his Landmarket Theatres is the only one in my area that shows them.

Re:One way to solve this
theaters might have to go digital so I will accept that they are trying to recoup the cost but I doubt it will go down after they do recoup it
That's something that puzzles me about what Mark Cuban is doing. Cuban owns the arthouse theatre chain Landmark Theaters, and though I haven't found it again a few years ago I read how Landmark was delivering movies to the various theatres digitally via the net. From one location they could distribute movies to all of the theatres showing the movie without having to deal with producing film copies then sending them via roads. Delivering movies this way takes less than an hour versus the days it takes to deliver film. Using the net to deliver movies like this is actually cheaper.

Re:Hollywood is out of ideas
If you're wondering about where the parent poster sees all these good movies, I'd suggest looking for a Landmark Theatres in your area. I've seen a wide swath of movies this year, and I keep noting that the ones I've caught at Landmark are the ones I've liked the most.

Re:3d video games
The Midtown Art Cinema in Atlanta already has this, albeit not in 3D.

downloading
It's a pity they've got their heads up their collective asses. I'd be happy to pay for on-line content if they'd provide a reasonable service. You'd think iTunes would have taught them a lesson.
I'd think they'd learned from Betamax. Movie studios were so afraid video cassettes would rob studios because people would be able to record movies yet tape sales became hugh profit makers. Seems what they are afraid of is new technology that gives movie watchers choices of what to watch when. There are some though who get it, like Mark Cuban the owner of the Dallas Mavericks. He first made a fortune from the internet so he gets it. Now he's pushing HDTV and is part owner of HDNet. He's also owner of Landmark Theatres and is working on delivering movies to theatres through broadband which eliminates shipping of film, reducing costs.

Lady friends and alcohol
For one I can't imagine taking a woman out... to your house. First off she might take it as... presumptuous and secondly, what is she to expect next? That dinner's going to be some mac n' cheese you just threw in the microwave? That she's going to have to clear a space for herself from your couch (and not there because that's where the cat sits)? Girl might be game and if so, more power to you. But she'll grow bored mighty quick if this is what all evenings' plans entail. Going Out is an expense but it's done for all the intangibles and the luxury of the evening. Good company, a good meal, a good movie, a good club can add up to a good evening. Of course that might involve dressing up a bit and talking to other people.
Also there are many non-megaplex theaters catering to adult sensibilities that offer alcohol (usually wine or bottled beer but you can wait until after if getting shitfaced is the order of business). It's pretty standard for art-house theaters. If there isn't a Landmark Theater near you, there is probably something similar. They even sell Pocky if you lack for a topic for the evening (leading well into bringing up Pocari Sweat). -
limited art house release and DVD sales
Most movies I see are shown at "limited art houses", at least at first. My favorite theatres where I live now are Landmark Theatre. Many of them latter make it the general cinemas. And if I like it enough I also buy the DVD when it comes out. Actually that's the only reason I got a DVD player, one movie I saw I wanted to get but it didn't come out on tape at first so I bought a DVD player to watch the dvd on. Now I buy mostly DVDs and not the tape, and no I don't rent movies, these places want your name, rank, and serial number, or at least your credit history which they will not get from me.
stolen material before it's even been released to the theatres.
This is a problem with the studios and/or distributers not file sharing. How can file sharing be responsible when a movie appears on a P2P before it's even released? Nobody from a P2P service should be able to get a hold of a movie before it's released.
FalconAh, I see their playing a documentary on Steve McQueen, The Essence of Cool. I may go see it.

Re:Why not?
The day Landmark Theatres start showing advertisements is the day I stop going out to movies! (Movie previews are OK. Car commercials are not.)

Re:You'll only screw yourselves...
You probably aren't in Texas, but the Inwood Theater in Dallas has a lounge that serves alcohol in the lobby. It is a really cool old theater, and they show a lot of foreign films.

Seattle? Scarecrow Video...
Ummm....they're okay, for the occasional lucky used purchase, but check out Scarecrow Video it's THE place for movies in Seattle. It's one of the best movie rental places in the world--in fact it's a destination store for many directors, screenwriters, various and sundry Hollywood refugees...
Their collection is a great place to start learning about any kind of film--they also sell region free dvd players, new and used dvd's, etc. Truly an amazing place and one of the cultural treasures of Seattle.
If you don't want to rent, you can buy there, or you can go to Kicks or any number of grey market places in Chinatown (only anglos call Chinatown the International District by the way). There's also the place in the Great Wall mall down in Tukwila, but I'd stay away from them for the fact that many of their dvd's don't work quite right, but to be fair, they've always been really great about returns and customer service.
And for seeing anime in theaters, well, you're very lucky to be in Seattle--even some of the biggies downtown show anime, particular the theater in Pacific Place, but the one that shows the most is the Varsity on University Way.
Have fun. -
Re:MPAA 0wnz and we all suffer.
If the movie theatres are 0wned by the MPAA, then where do the truly independent filmmakers go to show their work?
Great question ... here is your answer:
Search for the indie theaters in your area. I live in ultra conservative Texas and Dallas has three well known really good ones [The Magnolia, The Angelika, and The Inwood].
There are many other smaller true independent theaters where local tallent can show their stuff. Think gateway to the above listed. Start by attending a local film festival or even a local video festival and see where that leads you.
If you don't know of any in your area then play around with Google for a bit, you'll be amazed at what you find. -
Re:This is awesome!
We have Landmark Theatres.
