Salt Lake 2002I've been reading over some of the comments here, and I must say that I am appalled at the unjustified criticism and uneducated stereotyping being thrown around. Salt Lake City is not an inbred hick town, Mormons don't have horns, and Utahns are not polygamists (Those that are do so in violation of federal law and are the exception, not the rule. Besides, all the polygamists live in their own cities with unfinished houses to dodge taxes.), and the term "Mormon Olympics" is simply uncalled for. I am speaking as a former resident of Salt Lake City and current resident of Utah, and a Mormon all my life. Isn't this (Open Source) community supposed to be open minded and unjudging (except toward Microsoft products, of course
;p)? Shame on you all. Learn a little bit about a group of people before you go up and down criticizing it for things that aren't even true. The fact that the website runs IIS and is incompatible with Lynx says nothing about the character of the people who live in the state. Not everyone is an incompetent MCSE (I, for example, have written several useful projects).
Surely I will get moderated down for this post.

Re:Very strange...
For those who are interested in LDS history and theology, this event is recorded in the Book of Mormon as having occurred to the inhabitants of the ancient Americas:
Read about it in III Nephi chapter 9 -
It was the ....
Jaredites
They all died eventually. -
Re:The views of a Muslim in NY
On a related note, here is the word as I have it from SLC relayed by my EQP. This isn't to be taken as religious agrandizing, or competition. Mearly a bulliten that applies to many readers of slashdot.
[Message...]
As a further note,I bring a message from the Bishop which has in turn been received from the General Authorities of the Church.
1. We are asked to pray for the victims of the terrorist attack that occurred on Tuesday.
2. We are asked to reach out to Muslim friends/neighbors/acquaintances to ensure they know of our love toward them and to not participate in any kind of hatred or discrimination against them.
3. As noted below in Ron's note, there will be a special Fast this Sunday for the victims and their families. Fast offering donations should be made on the Humanitarian Aid line of the tithing/offerings receipt. Please indicate 9-11 on the slip and this money will be dedicated to assisting the victims of the disaster.
Please ensure that you have contacted every family you Home Teach by this evening.
[Ron's message]...
Here's a link to the message from the First Presidency about Sunday's fast.

The Church of Jesus Christ's statement
For those interested, here's the official statement from the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:
"In this hour of sorrow, the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints expresses profound sympathy to those whose loved ones, friends and associates were lost or injured in today's senseless acts of violence. We offer our prayers in behalf of the innocent victims of these vicious attacks. We ask our Heavenly Father to guide President Bush and his advisors as they respond to these devastating incidents.
"We join with others in prayers that the Savior's peace and love will comfort and guide us all through this difficult time.
"The resources of the Church will be made available to any relief agency requesting assistance."
Missionaries in NY and DC are reported to be fine. In addition, "Any appropriate humanitarian response is still under consideration, pending further assessment of needs."

Re:Moral compass
The Book of Mormon has a few passages about an actual moral compass called Liahona, used by a couple of Israelite families about 600 B.C. That's pretty old prior art.

Reminds me of a sermon that I heard.
This reminds me of a sermon that I heard. (The complete text of it can be found here.) I know that some of you will be offended by the religous nature of this. If you are among these people, just don't follow the link and you won't have anything to worry about.
This sermon is basically a practical guide to living in an information saturated world.

Re:Not that simple...
It's not like the Constitution is divinely revealed wisdom.
Well, actually...There are groups that believe exactly that. For example, the Church of Jesus Chirst of Latter-day Saints believes that the Constitution was devinely inspired. There are several revelations in their Doctrine and Covenants that state that. (See this article for example.)

Mormons are not certified whackjobsI grew up mormon - I'm not very devout right now, but i take offense at your statement that mormons are certified 'whackjobs' As opposed to what? what's your basis for this statement? And if it's soley on the basis that we have a few practices that aren't public, that's a pretty hollow argument, as you don't levvy it against the vatican as well.
Truth be told, there are a few eccentricities in the Mormon church, but that all depends on where you stand to begin with. I have this creeping feeling you have no clue what you're talking about.
If you really care to have something to base your argument on, check The Articles of Faith and tell me if they seem unreasonable. You can also check here for a balanced view. If you do have any real basis for your argument, please post or email it. Otherwise, can it.

It's really funny for Mormons. . .
Scifi freaks who are also memebers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints think Galactica is kinda funny since a lot of their stuff is stolen from religious stories/practice. "Council of the Twelve" and other such likenesses. It's been speculated that one or more of the producers was Mormon.

Bible 2 and global fringe cult
The Bible II would only start a global fringe cult at best!!
As an anonymous coward commented above, this "global fringe cult" is called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Another testament of Jesus Christ
There is another testament of Jesus Christ, and it's called the Book of Mormon. (Read More...)

All major christian religions usually
Particular groups of religious people who don't use drugs and strongly discourage their use are mormons and others.

Re:LDS vs Christian.Apart from your terrible spelling, you're plain wrong too.
IANAM (I Am Not A Mormon), but I am familiar with their belief and they ARE true Christians. They believe in Jesus Christ.
The only difference is that they think that Jesus was not the last "prophet", but that there are still "prophets" around. It's actually the leader of their Church, which called "Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints".
1) Jesus Christ should give away that they are Christians.
2) It's Latter-day, not Later day. Note the subtle difference in meaning here!Ivo.

Re:This is UTAH you know.Nope. It's not true.
Those who opposed God in the war in Heaven were cast out of heaven, and will never receive a physical body. Satan is in this group. (Those who followed God are all those who ever have or will live on the Earth.)
Dark skin was given to Cain (you know the guy, son of Adam, murdered his brother Abel), and to the Lamanites (American Indians) to separate them from their Nephites cousins, to prevent marriage between the two groups. In 1978, the Mormon church gave the priesthood to all worthy male members.
http://www.lds.org/ is a very informative web site, if you want to know what the Mormons *really* believe.

Re:This is UTAH you know.
look s-t. You spout off way too often on stuff you have NO idea about.
What if I am not a mormon what then? Public execution? whipped and beaten?
No, like most other major religions outsider are tolerated and encouraged to join up. The Mormon religion also has a doctrine on how un-believers will be given a chance to recieve the gospel after they die. When you hold incredibly high standards you get real good at tolerating those that don't, or you form a hate group. If you want to read about whipped and beaten read a little bit of Mormon history. Ever seen somebody tarred and feathered? You do know how Joseph Smith died right?
No Smoking, No Boozing, No Coffee, no Tea, No Pre-Marital Sex and many other rules that may seem arcane to outsiders.
Whoever wrote this missed the point. It no CAFFEINE, no NICOTINE (i.e. all tobacco), no rated-R movies is also a big one. These are all things that various Prophets of the church have counciled against (the current leader of the church is called the Prophet)
Only if you are actually part of the mormons these are not laws but ideas that they cary and ideas that really don't have much purpose.
If you replace ideas with ideals you would be closer, but still dead wrong. Every single one of the things they prohibit can cause severe health problems or unneeded trauma in one's life. The movie thing is to try and avoid unpure images being introduced into the brain, where they have a hard time getting out.
Giving unrestricted access to the internet is not the same as giving everyone a free adult check id number and free unmetered access to porn sites.
You haven't spent much time on the Net have you? I still don't think that filtering is the "right" thing to do, but avoiding the truth is not the way to prove your point. I prefer the "place Net-enabled computers in well-lit, high traffic areas" and let the patrons filer themselves. Very few people read Swank on the bus
Utah is not a country in and of it's own right and it dosn't get the right to change the constitution on a whim.
No, that's for Congress to do. How do you impose a national speed limit, drinking age? Threaten to hold back funding for those that don't comply. Monkey see, monkey do.
For a better picture of what Mormons believe at the root level go here
I am no longer a part of the Church by personal choice. This choice in Mormon terminoloy is called "Free Agency" (aka Free Will) and is regarded as one of the greatest gifts we recieved. We fought a war for it in Heaven, or so the story goes. They have faults, which MANY Internet sites are more than willing to point out, but the core of the religion is the family and most of the doctrine is designed to strengthen that aspect of life. Which is why I'm defending my family's beliefs here. And please don't bring up evolution, it's taught in the Book of Mormon.

Re:Don't know what to say...
Among other things, my church says simply "don't watch R rated movies." That might sound extreme, but if you're trying to keep up your spiritual sensitivity it's good advice.
