Alternatively use Less
Less Networks have a bootable cd that serves as a wi-fi hotspot server, which takes care of virtually all the hassle. If you are not going to be charging for access, then it's ideal. Forces a re-login every so often IIRC. Runs fine on a P2 with 128Mb RAM. You do need 2 nics (one in, one out) and an access point of course.

Fiber to the home
Meh, I'll just get verizon's fiber to the home service. Then setup a Less Networks node, roll my own NoCat Auth AP or join one of the great Area Wide Wireless networks.
Verizon is just a 500lb gorilla that can't see more than 2inches infront of its face! -
Austin Wireless City
Austin Wireless City has set up over 100 hotspots in Austin, all free, within various venues. This includes a partnership with the city to use its network for free wireless at city buildings and parks. The recipe for building hotspots the AWC way is at Less Networks, which provides a backbone for the AWC sites. However there's more to it than the recipe would suggest... e.g. getting visibility with the city and getting support from the wireless industry within Austin was party a function of the Wireless Future project. Bottom line is that we laid a lot of groundwork and had a major university helping suppor the effort, as well as over 90 companies in town with an interest in making Austin a hub for wireless activity. The businesses formed the Austin Wireless Alliance, and it's been promoting business and commercial aspects of the wireless explosion. Verizon just selected audience as a launch point for its 3G service. Rich MacKinnon (founder of Less Networks and Austin Wireless City) and I are both willing to talk to other folks in other cities about the work we did... and the Wireless Future report can be downloaded as a pdf here.

Austin hotspot
The Austin Chronicle has a nice story on austin's free hotspots setup by, lessnetworks.com, austinfree
There seems to be a rather large push for free hotspots in Austin, TX. Its quite noticable that starbucks and TMobile have about the only pay hotspot in town. Its popping up in the strangest of places, for instance the dog and duck pub now offers wireless. -
Re:How do I do this on my home WLAN?

Less Networks
We are this close (holding fingers an itty-bitty bit apart) to releasing 1.0 of our software for just this purpose. Free, based on open source (including NoCatAuth). It's what's powering Austin Wireless City project. Free software, any PC that will run RedHat, any access point, w00t.
