Yah, what seth said. Check out that article. I do believe that the downtownl library has it. Schlotszky's was one of the first here in austin. I remember driving there just to check it out, oh-those were the days... checkign your email from schlotsky's parking lot.
The Austin Chronicle has a nice story on austin's free hotspots setup by, lessnetworks.com, austinfree
There seems to be a rather large push for free hotspots in Austin, TX. Its quite noticable that starbucks and TMobile have about the only pay hotspot in town. Its popping up in the strangest of places, for instance the dog and duck pub now offers wireless.
in conjunction with ready technology that apple allready provides you can do some cool stuff. With bluetooth on your mac, using Salling Clicker with your bluetooth phone you have a portable display, volume control, search functions, all streaming to your loudspeakers throughout your house! Hah, and you say, what if you need to use your phone - o' well then it pauses the music while you use the phone, then resumes play when you are done. Obviously there is a market for this stuff... I amazed friends the other day, sitting on my back porch talking about that new album they hadn't heard..."oh yah, click click" and its playing the latest album I bought (yah I buy) from the applestore... and I can care less if its in your favorite format, because I am not giving them away. Way to innovate, again, apple.
sony makes, or at one time made, the battery. why not go for their throats too? Is the apple iPod a good product? Does it serve its function? yes, yes. Does it last longer than 18 months, sometimes that is the case. Personaly, I have never been able to hang onto any portable devices, digital camera's die, palm pilots die, my first sony discman stopped working after a year... whats up with that? Maybee all companies will have to adopt a labeling scheme that says something to the effect, "We really hope this product last a long long time for you, if it doesn't and its out of warranty, we sincerely appologize but it means that you should buy a new one, or pay to get this one fixed." Was the tech guy right, yah he probably was at the time, and then apple lowered it. I remember taking a call about an iPod, where this guy wanted to know if the ipod could be used as "elevator music" for his office. He wanted to plug the iPod into a receiver and have it play continuisly for throughout the week... he wanted to know if it would last for ever, I remembered telling him, "sir, to be quite honest I have no clue, but I would seriously doubt it only because nothing really lasts forever." the guy bought one on the spot because he liked the honesty." Like doggies and kitty's, batteries too die...
this all sounds like a recursive nightmare. a mirror within a mirror within a mirror. Talk about smoke and mirrors, SCO is going to try and convince us that they infact invented flight, and that they have copyright on copyright, so everyone must pay them, say, $50 a day for the rest of our lives.
I think it may be that there is a good reason for a discrepancy in the testing, then again their may not. A Windows user can speculate, a mac user can defend, yet at the end of the day neither will change their mind. I have a mac at home (PBG4 & PMG4), and they are much slower than my work PC, but the difference is not the speed, its the feel of it. The user experience, the crispness of a mac vs the sloppiness of the windows machine, or sorry to say linux especially. I think osx is a bit more refined in some ways, personally I like it much better than Windows 98/2000, now I think that I would like XP a bit more, but I haven't gotten to play with it much. Thing about it, I like computers - as do all of you - only I don't really care one way or another! They both have usefullness, one is just faster than the other, but also onle looks a lot better than the other. A corvette is much faster than a Rolls, but one takes you there is style and class... but if all of this is true, and Apple has deceived us with marketing!! Well thats not what I buy a Mac for, and I definately don't like being lied too! I think that when the new G5 is shipped another side by side comparison should be made - for all of us too see? Who would do that, without bias?
Having worked at apple tech support, I am quite sure that they would have if you pursisted enough. You may have gotten a disgruntled temp that didn't know what to do. Also, I have found that many online stores will process nearly immediately, and that it is hard to stop, change, add to orders after you click 'process'. Such is luck I guess. ibooks are great, i have a powerbook g4 now, but i dearly miss my 12" ibook. Not as many worries, and it did everything I needed it to do... cheaper too!
I think its funny that people still buy software in boxes from stores like Best Buy, Circuit City etc. I am insulted by these places, they treat people like shmucks.
Just wanted to point out, that my heart is warmed that we can all agree on something so profound and great such as jazz. Though I have not read all the posts, I do find that nearly all of them are helpful, insightful and not at all destabalizing. Jazz is pure, jazz does not invoke argument (that much). Jazz is art. Even those that don't like it don't really say anything bad about it.
Oh - man, after about 6 months out of being telephone support for apple I am forgetting everything... but, I do remember this little script inside the scripts folder (you mighs search for scripts in the nifty finder) there is a applescript that will parse through your outlook address book and perhaps (memory fails me) it does the mail too? Again, its been a while.. but you should have some luck looking into that script, maybe you can edit the script to do what you want it to do? Hope that helps... maybe applecare support can help you, but they will probably tell you to go FYS, but then again I helped someone do it once. I am pretty sure this was 10.2/jaguar only thingy...
That is a great idea! Thanks! I have about three books I am reading from gutenberg now, and it seems as though i am never going to make it through them... I find that it is hard to find your place if you have to get up and get a cup of coffee. When you set it to read, can you pause it and come back? Doesn't it loose focus of what it is reading, say if you change the window in the foreground? I can't wait to get to work and try it! Again, thanks for the idea.
I love Victoria. She takes me back to the days when everything used to talk. In Hong Kong, in 84 (or so) the had an Isuzu Impulse that would talk to you when you got in, I don't think it ever materialized over here. Does anyone know what cars still talk (besides kit). Seems like the AI industry would be pushin their technologies all over car makers today. Have you car read to you (in the voice you choose) slashdot RSS feeds as you drive to work. I think apple should look into developing its own car, or perhaps a Volkswagen Jetta, Apple edition, running OS X 11.1, LynX. It seems to me that if you drive a volkswagen, you probably have a mac; or if you have a mac you want a volks wagen... much like I think of Coca-cola to Chevy, or Pepsi to Ford...
