Re:civilization
Civilization is one of the best games that I have seen in a number of years. Although it was the inspiration for the computer game, it is very little like it. Each person controls a nation, which you must expand and build to the greatest nation. This is where the similarities end. There are no specialized units, and the game is much less combat-centered, making it more important to focus on keeping your population under control and making sure you can still support all your cities. Perhaps the most exciting part of the game is trading resources. Each turn, you get a number of commodities, which you must trade in order to end up with more of one particular kind of commodity. If you get enough, you can "purchase" technologies that enable you to advance in the game. For more information, this page [http://www.lilback.com/civilization/ah/intro.htm
l #overview] has a nice short summary. -
Civilization Originally a Board Game?
Didn't Sid Meier base the original Civilization computer game on Avalon Hill's game of the same name (albeit a British spelling)? (See, for instance: http://www.lilback.com/civilization/ah/board.html
. ) I never played it, but I wonder how similar the gameplay of the original version is to the new board-game-to-computer-game-board-game version. At any rate, I call dibs on adapting the new board game into a computer game. -
Re:Yawn...
How much business did France and Germany do with Iraq in violation of UN resolutions?
Read the articles and you'll find that one is covered. The US government stripped out 8000 of the 11,200 pages Iraq sent to UN. Fortunately, Iraq also gave a copy to some Europian reporters who wrote stories about those pages. Pages that provided dirt on France, Germany, Russia, and the US. It also gave evidence that Cheney should be indicted for war crimes.
I never heard that story reported in the US, which frightens me. And I would call it censorship when the corporate-owned media doesn't report a story because it would make their parent company look bad.
I got my degree in Journalism and worked in DC for a few years. I gave up on it because of the self-censorship that all reporters were expected to perform.

Re:a MUSICAL exercise and a question about ADHD
Games are short term goals. The longest games last an hour or two at most.
You've never played Diplomacy or Civilization then? You may not have been exposed to eight+ hour games, but some of us used to play through the night in college. -
Check out Mac SQLThere is a Mac OS X SQL front end called Mac SQL available from RunTime Labs that includes ODBC drivers for mSQL, mySQL, and Sybase. I believe Metro Technologies has Mac OS X ODBC drivers for Oracle.
The person to ask about this is Marc Lilback; he wrote the ODBC stuff for OS X; his web site at www.lilback.com has drivers, sample code, and ports, but I believe he charges for this. Mac SQL databases are his livelihood.

Re:Here here!Erm. Have you actually played the Avalon Hill games? They have almost nothing in common with the Microprose Civs. Microprose bought the franchise, but that is where the similarity ends. Compare the Advanced Civilization Demo to the Microprose versions. It's almost like saying Diablo is based on Talisman.
