Re:"Won the right to submit offers"
Regardless to how much you just 'say' to the contrary, people know and are comfortable with Windows, Linux desktops don't act or feel the same and that costs a lot of man hours. Not for people like you who can transition to a new OS rather easy, but for all the low level grunts who don't 'know how to use computers', but 'remember the series of clicks' to get their job done.
Oh! Sorry, I was momentarily distracted. You were saying...?

Linux XP/Ubuntu/Mint
I've never used it before, but I've heard good things about http://www.linux-xp.com/ which claims to be "The most user-friendly interface ever made for Linux". I don't think you would have too many problems switching somebody to a distro like Ubuntu or Mint. Since you mentioned that most of your friends and family only need some basic programs, it shouldn't be too difficult to install the software for them through apt-get and slap the icons into the top panel. The Ubuntu Software Center is decent enough as well that they can probably find other things that they may need as well, hopefully without having to call you.

Re:Linux will never do this
In Russia (not the Soviet Russia, the modern one) there is a Linux distribution called Linux XP. They sell it without opening source codes and they are clearly against the GPL.

These bastards have indeed put the activation into the kernel. It is by all means most windows-like distribution - you even run as root by default.
Too bad the legal situation with the GPL isn't clear in the country so they can carry on. Hope it'll change soon. -
Re:No way, given half a chance
The good thing about this is, if enough people express/think it's usefull, someone will do it for you.
Have you seen Linux XP ?
Yes, if you know how to do it yourself, you are more empowered. But that's the same for a lot things.

Using one Now!
I have been using Linux XP for three years now! The newest version LXP2007 is due out in Sept 2007. It IS a VERY good Distro, the newest version based on Fedora Core6. It is a FOR PAY Distro and has been highly customized. The latest version is beautifully done and works excellent. Follow the link to version 2006: http://www.linux-xp.com/ penguin7009
