I think this more or less sums it up.

Try OpenCroquet Project!
Human Computer Interaction, for many, seems to have been pegged down to the windows 95 explorer.exe interface. The best project(s) that I've seen to demonstate possible Ideas is the OpenCroquet project:

It's only a dev release, but very promising. PhD. Alan Kay, the head of the project, has some 40 years experience and has been in the lead of many tech projects, such as the Xerox Parc team that made smalltalk and a lot of other great stuff. To be amazed, check out this site for Alan Kay's Etech 2003 Presentation: http://www.lisarein.com/alankay/tour.html -
Re:What's the big fuss?
Check out some of his presentations of open croquet before you say that (see e.g. here). He is bringing the kind of OpenGL graphics that gamers have got used to into the mainstream GUI. It is among the most innovative and forward-looking interface development I've seen. Do we really think we'll be dragging windows around a 2D desktop in 30 years time?

Re:what about Doug Engelbart?!
Here's some historical video of Engelbart in action (thanks Lisa!):

Doug Engelbart was also largely influenced by JCR Licklider:

Read his seminal papers titled 'Man-Machine Symbiosis' and 'The Computer as a Communication Device':

Re:QT or MPGKeep in mind that mplayer uses win32 dlls, so if your game is non-x86-32 then it's useless.
Well I can play Quicktime films on LinuxPPC (i.e. no windows dlls) with both mplayer and vlc.
Not all, but some of the more obscure ones like, for example this one. Also, I have found no problems with
.mp4 files (with MPEG-4 video/ and both mp3 and mp4 (aka AAC) audio): they play in quicktime on mac os x and with vlc on any other platform. -
Re:Kind of makes you wish...
I forgot to mention, if you want examples of Bush lying, you should watch the Bush/Bush debate, moderated by Jon Stewart.

Croquet demo video
You can find some great video clips of Alan Kay demoing Croquet here. Well worth watching, this is much more than just a 3D desktop.

Re:Croquet
If you're interested in more about what Alan's been working on recently, check out Alan Kay and David Smith's Keynote at ETECH 2003.
I've seen it firsthand (some alpha builds sitting right here) and have to say it's damn impressive. He's recruited some really smart people, and I'm quite excited about what they're working on (self-modifying code, smart objects (object veiling/advanced capability models), P2P sync/mesh networking, natural interfaces [mirrors, portals], etc. etc.)

Re:Yes!!
You think Moore was booed at the Oscars because the people in that crowd disagreed with him? Hardly. It was the equivalent of modding his rant off-topic.
Except he wasn't booed... Was he really booed?
That's the whole point of the movie you bonehead, is to get people talking about these controversial topics. Stop treating the symptoms and start addressing the problems. -
Alan Kay Etech 2003 presentation
Here's a presentation at Etech 2003 Alan Kay gave on some early computer projects that were way ahead of their time and he also demoed his latest project: Croquet -- which is a 3D collaborative environment pretty close to Metaverse.
