Re:I'm as stumped as my girlfriend usually is
I assume Wouter (The parent poster) and I are both equally delighted te be have found a home away from tweakers.net, which carries mainly bad translations (To dutch for those still wondering) of slashdot items... I better shut up now, voor ik een bende power-koeien achter mij aan krijg. -
Re:I'm as stumped as my girlfriend usually is
Actually, the good people at Loral provide a handy and informative glossary on their site. Note also that this glossary has been hacked by one "GUL7" (see first entry). heh. That poster's girlfreind was right.

Telstar 6
From the Telstar 4 link, I can see that there's a Telstar 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, and 13, but no Telstar 9 in the list. What happened with Telstar 9?

Re:Effect ?
The last time a Telstar satelite went out of alignment about 3/4ths of the credit card processing in the US went offline. Many banks and gas stations relay their CC processing through transpoders on one of the Telstar satelites instead of dedicating a phone line on each end of the connection. It looks like T-4 is used by ABC and CBS for network programming. See This for more info.

Re:Hmm, T-3,2,1 anyone?
Well, I'd bet that the DoD uses Loral's spacecraft for some non-sensitive point-to-point data stuff.
Yup, SkyNet. -
Re:a group with lots of money forced to compete??
Loral has some birds in the area (essentially Europe), but at $.33 a share, I don't think you want to buy into it. Looks like few people are making money in satellites these days, and I doubt that a short-term spike in usage is going to change that.

Re:So what satellite?
According to the Guardian article, it's on Telstar 11 - which is a Ku only bird. Check the footprint to see if you are in the beam. Plus, of course, you'll need a Ku LNB.
