Re:How did it come to this?
horseshit. There was the X-33 which died because of costs and projected technical issues.
Then there was the Constellation Program which was proposed by Dubya after the Columbia disaster and proposed to re-use technologies learned from Apollo and the Shuttle. It was actually going quite well but budget concerns crept in and it was de-funded in the 2011 Federal Budget and with that we now have the situation where the Shuttles were retired, we have no manned capability and we were expected to spend $6Billion on ferrying astronauts using Russian rockets. Of course real American heroes (Armsrtrong, Lovell, Cernan that have been to the Moon argued against killing Constellation but we now have Bolden who couldn't find his ass in broad daylight with both hands and now we are where we are with just continuing the Orion capsule development and choosing a heavy lift engine by 2015..
It wasn't NASA not preparing for a replacement after the shuttle, it's more or less the large behemoth that is NASA for not getting something in place quicker.
In order to make significant investments like this for Space exploration, it takes substantial amounts of money and the political will to accomplish that if you're going after federal dollars. Unfortunately with continual trillion dollar plus deficits I fear we're going to have to get away from the NASA side of the equation and push to more private enterprise to get back to the moon or mars for that matter. Or we'll just watch the Chinese and Russians do it and say "woulda, shoulda, coulda" -

Re:Ah don't worry...
This from an anti-Muslim hate site. No supporting citations to their numbers, but they promise to "supply sources upon request". Instead of each item linking to some citation, they link to other pages on the anti-Muslim hate site that says the exact same thing as the item.
I decided to test your assessment. I took the first six news items they listed:
The List of Islamic Terror Attacks from 2012
2012.06.18 Pakistan Quetta 5 69 Five Shiite students are blown to bits by Taliban bombers.
2012.06.18 Afghanistan Tagab 6 13 At least six locals are exterminated when religious extremists detonate a bomb at a bazaar.
2012.06.17 Nigeria Trikania 5 40 A Shahid suicide car bomber crashes through a church gate and blows up at least five Christians.
2012.06.17 Iraq Fallujah 6 12 Two children are among six slain by Jihadi bombers.
2012.06.17 Nigeria Zaria 34 125 Holy Warriors walk into two church services and detonate, leaving over thirty worshipers dead in the carnage, including at least ten children.
2012.06.16 Pakistan Landi Kotal 26 65 Sharia advocates detonate a truck bomb amid a crowd at a market, sending over twenty-six souls to Allah. And this is what I found after a minute or less of Google news search for each - reasonable evidence for each of the six items listed.
Pakistan Bus Bombing Kills Students In Quetta
Blast in French-controlled Afghan town kills six
Islamists Bomb Three Churches in Kaduna State, Nigeria
Iraq bombings kill four, wound 32
At least 50 dead in three Nigeria church bombings, reprisal attacks
Around the WorldNow then, the links below are from a side bar labeled "News" on the front page. Apparently the sites you complain about as being hate sites include Reuters, the BBC, the CS Monitor, The Telegraph, the Emirates 24/7, and other lesser lights. In short, you are full of baloney - to be polite about it.

Re:Tornado Alley Could Be the New Middle East
T. Boone Pickens demonstrated someone getting in too far over their head too fast in this market. I really wish he would explain to everyone what went wrong with his plans. Who knows? The cement for the bases could get too expensive?
He tried to change Texas law so that the water supply corporation he owned in the Texas panhandle would be able to use eminent domain to take land on a corridor to Dallas/Fort Worth, so as to convey the wind power. Oh, and he could use the same corridor to convey water from the panhandle to DFW as well.
In all those wind power ads and interviews you saw, he never did mention the fact that he owned significant water rights in the Texas panhandle, and just needed a route to pipe that water to major cities to sell it. Do you recall that part?
When Texas balked about letting him pump the panhandle dry and flood (literally) the DFW market with his water, he stopped his ruse of caring about the environment.

Re:Safety?
There was an interesting mythbusters on falling bullets. They couldn't get much force out of them.
Only if they are shot at a 90Â angle. Idiot assholes who shoot "into the air" hardly ever fire straight up. Falling bullets have killed many people, and one guy got a 20 years sentence for manslaughter.

Re:The difference between "following" and "trackin
The term is called ambulance chasing.
...and if I'm not a lawyer/doctor hawking my services to accident victims, then no, it's not...
In Texas, "ambulance chasing" seems to be limited to "lawyers and chiropractors"...

Re:ISS vs MIR failure rates?I'm not sure if that is true of not... MIR was a much smaller design. Here are two things I do know about MIR:
--There was a major fire in 1997, the crew was barely able to extinguish it before it killed them (story here).
--We have no idea what the failure rate of equipment on MIR was before the USSR collapsesd. Who knows what might have happened up there. It was not reported in the press.
--Here is list of problems on MIR: (list)

Re:negligent homicide
A search of Google returns 46,000 hits for Negligent Homicide. On the face of it, many, but by no means all of these, have been traffic cases, and defendants have been convicted of the charge, even when cold sober at the time of the accident.
Well, that's the face of it, I guess.
Negligent homicide is a lesser included charge to involuntary manslaughter that does not exist in every state. You can find it, for example, in Texas (link) and Arkansas (link). It appears that Texas has this lesser included because its penalties for involuntary manslaughter are unusually harsh, and lawmakers didn't necessarily want them applied to speeders.
Generally, negligent homicide statutes include a clause requiring "reckless or wanton disregard for the safety of others," and simple fatigue rarely if ever meets that burden. -
The article reference...
If you're looking at my "from the article" quote and wondering what I've been smoking... it's not me! The reference changed!
The Slashdot story now links here, but it originally looked like this:
Sprinkled in the Janet Jackson boob stories is an alarming bit of information: Tivo tracks subscribers' viewing habits.
At first, I thought, "Is the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal not enough of a "major news outlet" for Michael?" Then, I compared the articles... the Lubbock newspaper didn't even mention the now-famous boob, while CNN didn't even mention the privacy implications!
As curious as I may (or may not) be about Janet Jackson's breast, it has never been caught recording my personal viewing habits. Give me the Avalanche-Journal over CNN, any day. -
Not too surprising
The days of $80,000/year for tapping out less complicated HTML than you see in the comments on Slashdot, sipping cappucinos, and a free scooter to ride around work are gone, so naturally the base of people who thought they could make a quick buck in IT are vanishing. It's just that knee-jerk go-where-the-money-is phenomenon getting a correction.
It's like that Kingston Memory thing a few years ago. The owners had hidden away a stack of cash to give a very special Christmas bonus to their employees. Even the janitors walked away with $20,000 bonuses. When that made the news, they were inundated by phone calls for employment. Well, the bonuses haven't been made public since then, and where are the calls now?
The same thing happened to IT. Nobody hears about it anymore, and if they do it's usually bad news, so nobody cares. Now the only people left are the ones who really love it. Those people will get the true rewards, because they are always growing and learning even though the tough times, and as such will always have a leg up on the noobs who show up when they smell money.

And again, it's Delaware...Stambler filed his suit in February 2001 in U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware in Wilmington.
The big question is, when will Delaware clean up its act? Not content to merely keep quiet and maintain a not-unprofitible existence as screen door manufacturer for the world, Delaware has lately been attempting to hijack the limelight for itself in a series of staged "coincidences" which I believe are too well-planned to have been anything but a massive attempt to gain prestige amongst the other 49 states. Consider, if you will:
Engineer has "patents" which would invalidate the security of the Internet. Where does he go? Delaware.
Marvel Comics, home of Spider-Man, the X-Men, and many other lovable good guys, files for bankruptcy. Where are they forced to do it? Delaware.
The movie Fight Club. Where's it take place? Delaware.
In an episode of the Cosby Show, Vanessa's car is stolen. In Delaware.
Look, I'm a pretty average guy, not some conspiracy nut. But the evidence speaks for itself: Delaware wants to rule the world. And something must be done. Thank you. -
Re:3.5 million years ago ?
Agreed. We don't even have a complete picture of our own planet's ecology from 3.5 million years ago. It is worth studying the unique Andean environment anyway, simply because it is there, so I suppose if they have to use BS like this to get the grant, I will excuse it. I just hope that they keep their focus broad. Also, I am a little concerned that they intend to dive into the frigid lake to collect water and sediment samples. Doesn't this introduce danger and contamination to the ecosystem that they are trying to study? They should realize this considering that they admit that Perhaps humans - either the Incas in the distant past, or recreational mountain climbers more recently - introduced life to the lake in the first place. I just hope that they take the kinds of precautions that were taken at Lechiguilla where they also are drawing analogies to the Martian ecosystem.

Meanwhile, In other news ...
According to most scientistics, the retreat in the West Antarctic ice sheet has been occuring for 10,000 years.
Also on BBC, Ice thickens in West Antarctica
Sun is hotter, but shrinking (mass energy conversion, you know).
Maybe we should realize that perhaps some of the global warming hype is just hype. Everytime there is a heat wave on the news coasts, there a new round of global warming stories. Normal climate variability is large, and modern winters are not the warmest ever (or even in modern history). Check out Minnesota 1877. The observed long-term warming trend since 1900 is not unusual in terms of climate history.
BTW, risk of Kyoto protocol is followed in 100% of the expected cost, because it is certain damage to world economy. -
Re:Ooh, so confusing
Pixar == Disney distribution == Disney == bad.
This is temporary. Check the company's long range plans. They are in a distribution agreement with Disney for only so long, and only so many films. What else could they do to get their first few films out? As soon as the Disney deal is up, they can go independent, hook up with DreamWorks (doubtful), or whatever. I just hope they don't re-up with the big D. I'd like to see them have enough capital and expertise to manage the entire process on their own. -
Re:His questions have already been answered....This is indeed true, and indeed scary.
Consider the major television media players:
- CNN - owned by Time Warner
- ABC News - owned by Disney
- NBC - in a strategic partnership with Microsoft
- Fox - owned by a content congomerate of the same name
- CBS - owned by Westinghouse, which is
diversifying into ownership of cable music channels
We can't reasonably expect unbiased reporting on this subject when the top five television news companies all have a vested interest in preserving the DMCA intact. - CNN - owned by Time Warner

Scared Straight to the Grave
A friend of mine had a foster brother who was caught stealing things from one of the neighbors. The local Sheriff, apparently having heard about the success of the Scared Straight program aimed at juvenile delinquents, proceded to describe to the young man what he was in for if he entered prison. The young man committed suicide at the age of 16.
