This was the last time Tom is on Oprah. Really funny. Gut splitting really.

Finally there is the making of war by the spooky Anonymous who has declared war against the cult of
Scientology. A video manifesto of sorts. Oh, this was already linked. Well, it's here just for completeness.

Nerdcore Hip-hop
Here's a hip hop Halloween video to go with the CDs. It's awesome, if only for the appearance of Dragon Mummy and the revelation that werewolves can give people Parkinson's disease. CC licensed BY-NC-ND.

Self serving, yet helpful comment.
Try out Lulu TV for doing short videos/trailers/webisodes and Lulu.com for DVD sales. Lulu TV converts to Flash for browser viewing, MP4 for iPod/PSP and 3GP for phones. We support OGG uploads, and will support the Gnash player when it releases. You also get your own RSS feeds, etc.
I work there, so I could just be a shill. But it's free, so you've nothing to lose by trying.
We have a guy using Lulu TV for webisodes of a documentary he's filming to raise funds and drive awareness. It's also a good place for all the footage he can't use for the film. He sells the DVDs of another documentary via Lulu.com:

Re:Lulu.tv
I see a Star Trek parody on the front page - http://www.lulu.tv/?p=1882.
The submitter doesn't seem to be Paramount pictures, although the old Star Trek cartoon is being used with new audio.
So much for "only the creator". -
Re:Or...
Your right. The lulu.tv subscription model will pay for as long as your video is in the co-op pool and generating traffic... if you do one a year, and its so-so then you'll make a little back for your subscription. If it is truly good stuff then it will get traffic in a good chunk in the beginning and then a nice stream (see long tail). So if the first is paying for the subscription, and maybe some more, then the rest.... I mean, you can not like the model if it doesn't fit your content, but that doesn't sound like the case.

Re:Revver
Revver pays based on an advertising model. lulu.tv is a co-op, that is paying out 80% of what we take in. Aside from that we dont ship your video onto peoples websites as it seems like a less effective (though we could be wrong) way for the creator to make a name for themselves (though they are free to embed it). Instead using the co-op we don't have to rely on that type of marketing and instead provide downloads, xml feeds of every variety, and try to encourage sharing to raise interest in the creator, instead of whatever company the ad is pimping. Chances are the ad based variety is a good model too, its just a different model with less advantages for the author to create fame for themselves.

Re:But
I have to imagine that would go something like the tourettes guy, then... yes.

Re:Pay for play video? Welcome to Amatuer Porn
plus how much pr0n do you need? we don't do it at lulu.tv and the experience is actually moderated (see. differences between us and youtube) so that only the good stuff comes to the surface, else your relegated to the belly of the beast.

Re:Self limiting
It might be. But what cut will you actually get? We aren't ruling out advertising, or several other channels, but if lulu.tv did it there would be a split with the creator just like everything else we do. We are very interested in finding the best way to get cash back to creators, and not corrupting their fame with the lack of recognition you get with an ad stuffed on a website. As far as people downloading movies... go ahead. There are rss2, atom, ipod feeds etc... and getting the video known will increase the chance you'll be interested in the creators next works. So come back and check them out... we don't bite... at least not if you have a mildly css capable browser;-D

Re:Or...
Getting that cash in the hands of those that created the videos is the distinction of lulu.tv. Lulu is dedicated to helping creators share, collaborate, sell, and now co-op their IP, helping indy creators get known, grow, and get paid.
-
Re:Or...
Which is why lulu.tv doesn't make them... Did I blow your mind?
-
Re:Current.tv
Ha, check out the stats on how many people have actually been paid. Lulu.tv is much more ambitious as to paying people.
-
Re:What, already?
Embedding the source is actually a great idea, or at least a flash version (7) that is recognizable. At Lulu.tv we added a link to the mp4, but anyone with a clue will see the other file paths including avi's, and streaming ready 3gp's for viewing on cellphones. Google video also allows at least some avi's to be downloaded... though I'm obviously partial to the first:)

Re:The new killer-killer...
Killer is an interesting phrase. It would indicate that you are quashing the life from the original. The issue really is that people have a bunch of problems. One of those is that they want to share videos with their friends, another they want to share with their fam. The last is that they want to make some cash because their work doesn't actually suck, or isnt incredibly personal. Lulu.tv is answering the third, the first, and partially the second, and there is plenty of room for businesses in this space. How many want to service just the networks? Google, Itunes etc... How many want to just service off revenue... well thats a much bigger number. Or us with a co-op... any which way its not killing anything, there are soooo many problems that need to be addressed that there is room for plenty of companies in this space. The ones that are doing whats right for the end producer while finding a way to keep the lights on will succeed, those trying to answer their own problems will not. So sayeth the killer-thread-killer.... So in short, I concur.

Re:Problem
As long as its creative commons licensed or public domain nuthin. In fact I would recommend starting with the archive.org content as a great place for public domain content, especially if you are into mashups or mouseovers. Or if you have an afternoon to burn while waiting for a kernel recompile, you can make something like catassterpiece theatre... which while no picasso, sure is fun to spread around. I have grabbed a bunch of the public domain stuff I'm interested in, like the old superman and popeye toons, but there are way more that would be cool to see redone... keystone cops linux commercial mashup anyone?

video biz models
Speaking of video business models, Bob Young is in the NYTimes this morning covering www.lulu.tv and the business model of a creator co-op. Bob Young was actually talking specifically about the possibilities of sharing advertising back in his presentation at Linuxworld.
It is good that open source folks are focusing on the business models for Internet Video as this is another place that if we are not careful will get yanked away from joe public and put into the hands of execs and studios that push their cookie cutter dreams all over my viewing experience... and far more importantly take the cash that should be going to creators. -
