Re:DRM Creep?
Would that be slip kid or analog kid? Or maybe you meant New World Man?

Not so.the country has reached a critical mass that although could be unravelled, seems to be for the most part on autopilot.
I understand your point, and I'm glad we don't all have to be constantly fighting to keep the Vandals from the gates. Luckily for you and me, there are lots of people who think otherwise:
- Consider the young men and women to join the military to defend their country. Never mind your opinion of any particular war - they joined risking their lives, if necessary, to protect the nation.
- Consider the thousands of lawyers who give up vastly greater income for a chance to serve as judges, public defenders, and district attorneys. Yes, the jobs have their perks, but almost all of them have as their driving force a commitment that the rule of law, one of the fundamental principles of our country, should be preserved.
- Most people in the media (including bloggers) do their jobs hoping to influence society and keep the government and institutions of power from becoming more corrupt. Some of them get seduced by the camera and glamour, but most of them are there to do good.
- Know any policemen, firefighters, citizen's group activists, or teachers? Some are there to collect a paycheck or something, but most of them are there to do good as well. In the same way, each of us should do our part to make the whole thing work.
In other words, it's not autopilot. It's just that the hard work of keeping the republic together happens out of sight. Not knowing your background I can't guess at your contributions, but you might ask yourself what you have done to deserve citizenship.
As a favorite poet put it:
You don't get something for nothing
You can't have freedom for free -
Re:google google everywhereJust to show that I got the reference, and for those wondering.. "from the google-google everywhere dept." is a reference to The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner by sir Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
That's the Rime of the Ancient Mariner, btw... and it'as a kick-ass Iron Maiden song too (also note the albatross reference in Serenity... it's about the same poem

eHeroes
"I looked over Jordan and what did I see
Saw a U.S. Marine in a pile of debris
I swam in your pools
And lay under your palm trees
I looked in the eyes of the Indian
Who lay on the Federal Building steps
And through the range finder over the hill
I saw the frontline boys popping their pills
Sick of the mess they find
On their desert stage
And the bravery of being out of range
Yeah the question is vexed
Old man what the hell you gonna kill next
Old timer who you gonna kill next"
- from The Bravery of Being Out of Range by Roger Waters -
Weird Al song
Would it have been too much to have given proper credit to "Weird Al" Yankovic?

Re:very scary
I've been thinking about this too, for mostly the same reasons as everyone else, but you hit on the one reason I hadn't yet read. I want to wear cheap sunglasses!

Re:I'd rather they not even try
Have you actually ever listened to the lyrics? They are very appropriate, and deal with breaking free of constraints, reaching for the stars, that sort of thing.
I can sortof see your disappointment... You were expecting another star trek series, in star trek style and all that, but Enterprise is not Star Trek. Star Trek deals with the exploration of the galaxy by a well-established, powerful alliance. Gene Roddenberries vision of a ideal future is already in full swing. In contrast, Enterprise deals with the problems that the first human interstellar explorers might deal with. Things go wrong, supplies are a problem, they have to work things out as they go.
The entire thing has a significantly different mood than any star trek story, and the song reflects this quite well.
Also, I don't think that there is a basic star trek music. Elements of the theme music of TNG/DS9/Voyager are similar, and they're done in a similar style, but they are different. TOS on the other hand has a different style (if I remember correctly - it's been ages), and since it takes place in another time, that's fair enough. -
Tom Petty Owes me a Keyboardor How Tom Petty Almost Made Me Quit Smoking
^@%$#%^@##@%$^%@#$ Tom Petty
How dare he make an album like Wildflowers, that can make you zone out and get lost for an hour. I just got done with a zone session that ended up with a cigarette burning through the left CTRL key on my nifty Keytronic LT Wireless Keyboard, the keyboard I've been faithfully typing away at for almost 5 years now. :-( :-( :-(
That keyboard, along with my trusty Logitech Cordless Mouseman, has been the direct interface between myself and the virtual world for some time now. The freedom was incredible. I could ease into my La-Z-Boy recliner, kick back, and surf for hours and hours and hours....[droooooooooool]Tom Petty, along with other artists like King Crimson and Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, have been responsible for many hours of zoned out internet surfing to some of my favorite sites. You've been there - putting on some tunes, firing up your browser, zoning out and surfing away...
Two minutes later, an hour has passed, the album has ended, and you've been around the world and back and hopefully learned something new. That's just how I started off the other night. I popped Tom Petty's Wildflowers cd into the drive, cranked up the volume, and fired up the browser. I was immediately sucked in by the sweet acoutic guitar sounds of the title track. Click... Click... Click... You Don't Know How It Feels comes up, I hear the sentimental lyrics, and I drift back to my younger days... Click... Click... Click... Another 30 seconds rolls by and half the album's over... Cabin Down Below just nails me with the big fat Telecasters running through tube amps turned up to 11 sound... Click... Click... Click... I finally make it to Wake Up Time
... "Time to open your eyes... And rise and shine..." and...I'm accosted by the stench of burning pl

Re:Babelfish..
Which is therefore a religion. Atheism is the belief, in the absense of any scientific evidence either way, that there is no deity just as theism is the belief in a deity under the same circumstances. They are both religions, and both equally irrational viewpoints defended, well, religiously.
In the immortal words of Rush "You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice. / If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice."
Or to put it another way, if on a form you are asked to choose your religion and you choose to put "atheist" or "none" or even "not applicable," that is your religious belief.
