Re:Referrer in the logs is highly unreliable
Before we went to Google Analytics we tried using referrer in the logs to track paths through our site. Something like 40% of browser visits (i.e. excluding known robots) did not report referrer properly. It was random and therefore totally useless.
Interesting. I suppose it depends on how many pageviews your average visitor is making. I see anything from 1.8 pageviews on average for http://lyricslist.com/ to 5.4 pageviews on average at http://what-is-what.com/ and on the sites with higher page views, less than 10%-20% don't have referers. Both sites are currently running Google Analytics and a third stats tracker (Extremetracking) for confirmation.
We thought about that, but at that point we were doing the exact same thing Google Analytics does anyway. We figured why not just use them, which is way easier and more powerful.
I suppose that I suffer from NDH syndrome.

Floating monument
Before the astronauts were declared dead I was wondering where the monument would be. It _should_ be in space.

Laptops are like anything else
Naturally, laptops are just like anything else you store stuff in. Bags, anyone?!? Those can be searched too, you know...

Cliffs in California
Didn't some guy from California fry his ankles off with one of these things a few years ago? I'm pretty sure he was jumping off cliffs, too, instead of jumping out of airplanes. Don't exactly remember how he landed, though.

Am I the only one?
I still use pine to access my Kmail mails when I'm not home- so long as Kmail isn't running I can access them fine (via ssh, of course). But I haven't seen pine updated for quite a while, so I can understand the reason to close the patches site. It just means that the program is finsihed! (therefore perfect)

Re:'Nothing to see here'
That's not what's important. They have to make it appear as though the 'ripping' of a dvd is illegal, no matter for what purpose, to prevent borderline cases. It's idiots protecting themselves from morons.

Unplugged his tubes?
It wasn't immediately clear if Wikipedia was inaccessible due to technical glitches or because government censors had blocked the site again. The Foreign Ministry and Ministry of Information Industry did not immediately respond when contacted for comment Friday.
That's probably because somebody unplugged his internet, too. Tubes, right?

Re:Good for them
So switch to Fedora. I did- and you're going to love Compiz.

Screen readers
Has nobody thought of the screen readers? This will just lock out the handicapped users, unless an alternative method is developed for them. Thus, the solution is not practical for any business.

Re:Does it run Linux?
It doesn't need to. If you want to run Linux, you can go pick almost any processor from the past ten years out of the trash. However, I'm pretty sure it will run one of the original Unix's, since they were around at the time (circa 1971).

Dvorak, thank you
Being how I type on a Dvorak keyboard at home, I love the idea of a 'better' layout. Assuming, of course, that it is in fact better.

XP, why?
I'm surprised that this wasn't done on a linux box. It'd be : a) cheaper, and b) cooler. Now M$ will just throw a sock in the works to fuck it up, somehow.

Self-appointed resellers?!?
I thought that Sony was closing down PS2/3 resellers, at least those who sell Japanese units to Europe. Are they available?
By the way, the article 500'ed out on me... /.ed

Re:Ah well.
Just like any other OS vendor. I won't mention one that goes two steps too far. At least Apple does keep it's regular users' best interest in mind, and thier own actions in step.

Re:What is wrong with Captchas?
That's because the
/. capthas use real words. For us who's native tounge is not English, the /. captchas are very difficult to read.

2 weeks on this approach
I'm already using the "identify this" / "identify that" approach. I went from 75+ spams a day to zero. Seems no hand-fed spam for my site. I'm very happy.

Humans???
What's wrong with using humans? This is exactly what humans are good at. While there most certainly are fields where machines can replace humans, this is _not_ one of them.

Buy or desalinate?
I've often wondered why here in Israel we don't desalinate water. Only in the small city of Eilat is this done, also for a population of about 20,000. It seems cheaper to buy drinking water from Turkey that to desalinate it.

Same point, new pencil
This is the work of a media mongol? Every word he writes has been written twice a week since 1995. Bet he's got eMule burning away right now... Really, the first parts weren't so bad. They guys making a point, but it's a point that's been made a thousand times before.

useless article
I'm as sensitive as any other Star Trek fan to the closure of any important scientific instrument, but the article is nonsense. It doesn't describe the benefits of the telescope. It's as if "yeah, well, no harm done" in a kind of way. Don't reporters learn _anything_ about the subjects they write about, or do they suspect that the public is as ignorant as they are?

What? Windows is insecure?!? Even with IE7?!?!?
And why is this news? Or is this a repost of what we've seen a hundred times before? Just once I'd like to see the headline "Windows declared safe to use for the next 24 hours".
