Re:wrong timeI dont think that matters so much so long as it's the same time, though it will be highest around the local noon. The exact time of local noon changes a bit from day to day as the earth is going a little faster when it's closer to the sun. That's why you get the figure 8 pattern - otherwise it would be a straight line up and down.

Re:hackers are everywhereAstronomy is an unusual domain in that professional researchers participate in and support amateur clubs, and are often glad to collaborate. It's practical and a there's a long tradition too. After all, Gallileo took some time at home to build his own telescope, make some observations and take very good notes!

Billiards anyone?How about this? We herd a couple of asteroids in closer to Earth and keep 'em handy as ammo, to knock away any that threaten. Setting this up would give us some real experience in moving these things.

Meteor Acoustics
Any many say you can hear them too! See, for example Leonid Meteor Sounds. Could be the power of suggestion, but one theory says that EMF from the ionization induces sounds in metallic nearby objects.
