Like that old commercial, I've read every page on the Internet, so I'm done and there's no more addiction! Seriously though, why do we care about what the Old Media has to say anymore about the 'Net?
Not well known, but a great geek read. What's not to like about a novel featuring a vampire on Mars, a somewhat kinky human/android meld, genetically engineered people and animals. And an awesome entertainment industry!
Dont' forget Player Piano! It is starting to look for and more prophetic: that technology has the tendancy to increase the gap between the haves and have-nots
Hey, the US Govt spends millions on flood insurance claims to people who live on barrier islands in the gulf that are made entirely of sand. When a hurricane comes in and wipes out houses and shifts the island, we move the sand back and pay people to rebuild! See (er, hear)
Hurricanes Fail to Dampen Coastal Building Boom". So why not spend something to learn about our solar system and our world?
Is there a way in Java script, or another implementation of this technique, that will trigger an update after a given time interval? OK, I can look this up myself (and will), but was wondering if anyone has done this to create a live page.
I don't know that many people are concerned about comets per se;
The classic sci-fi novel Lucifer's Hammer is worth a read to learn more about this. Another major focus of the book is how fragile civilization is, as we've seen all to clearly these past couple of weeks...
So you're saying you don't REQUIRE updates and patches at a fortune 500?
We had trouble at my companies site because nearly all of our 5,000 users are on Windows 2000 SP3. The patch was only for SP4, so I guess it was decided not to risk upgrade to SP4 with the patch. But then we got shutdown for the whole day!
Let's see: 5,000 people x 1 day: wonder if our TCO is still lower with Windows?
I think it would have been cooler if the machines were using us as inexpensive processing units
There's a cool book called Nightshade that had something like this: the bulk of society is in a welfare class called "Zoomers". They get free room and board but have to watch horribly dumb TV while pluging their brains into a network where they are used as CPUs. Scary thing is, if this can be done someday, I can really see it happening!
It's hard to think of any other scientific program that has provided so much valuable research insight -- and at the same time such a huge public awareness and appreciation. All this after getting off to such an infamous start!
I agree, get them something recreational! I'm sure I'm not the only one hoping for The Complete Calvin and Hobbes

But, what if someone started broadcasting... The Funniest Joke in the World?
