I often speak out about the iPod. (There are a lot of MP3 articles here on SlashDot concerning MP3's) Some that border on bizarre.

This article at MacCentral brought me to a conclusion:

The iPod may turn out to be the most useful piece of computer hardware ANY computer or electronic hardware company has ever developed.

That is a very general, seeming overly biased, statement coming from an Apple Computer Consultant; I'm sure.

Apple created a wonder in ease of use and portability with the iPod. Until the iPod was intrduced not only were Creative and Archos Jukebox series bulky, but 10, 15, and 20 gigs was impossibly slow to load to download to the units. They were also about as easy as a car stereo Mp3 player to navigate. Apple came out with a unit that essentially put a miniature iTunes (one of the easiest, most elegant MP3 players on any platform) on the iPod, made it a hard drive to boot, but added a firewire interface. This allowed the full 5, 10, and 20 gig transfer in minutes rather than the 3.3 hours it would take for the 20 gigs through USB.

The iPod is becoming a status symbol. Shaq uses one and CONSTANTLY talks about his in interviews. He made everyone on the team purchase one before they went to the playoffs last year.

The iPod is also versatile beyond it's intended uses:

I have already seen future incarnations and "in development" iPods. Apple is planning for it to change the future direction of the company!

To answer a question common in the forums, there WILL be an update to allow 10 and 20 gig rev 2 iPods to work, it will be released sometime next month.

size. weight. interface. speed. battery life.

While it might not be a "milestone" of anything, it does all of those better than anything else I've seen. Plus, you can play breakout on it.

I believe users of a lesser platform can get a firewire card for arounf 30 bucks. Also, you can use the iPod with Windows. Doesn't look like their is a linux solution yet, but you're probably used to that :-)

Try using a fucking product, or at least read up of it before you decide to comment on it. It makes you look like less of an idiot/asshole.

When the iPod first came out, it was decried as yet another soon-to-be-discontinued Apple experiment. It was called over-priced and under-valued. Many were the posts that blasted it as too niche for even Apples niche market. Now, suddenly, we hear people asking for a Windows version of iTunes, and can it run Linux (or BSD). We hear that the drive it uses retails for the same as the iPod itself. The iPod may in fact be the breakthrough that Jobs claims it is (ok, maybe not, but closer than people thought it was a week ago). Here's why -

Anyone who may have been considering purchasing a Toshiba MK5002MAL will now give MUCH greater consideration to buying an iPod instead. I know it's not as easy to switch out as a 'true' PCMCIA device, but even if you don't have a Mac, you can still use it as a FW drive. This will drive sales up considerably - there is a market for it outside the Mac world even without iTunes and its MP3 capabilities. And how long before someone hacks it, makes it work with other OSes.

Know what I think? I think Apple SHOULD release a Windows version of iTunes, and CHARGE FOR IT! How long have Mac users had to pay extra to play with Windows? VPC, SoftWindows, Orange Micro PCI adapter cards, MacLink, the list goes on. Well, you know what, Windows users? If you want the ease, the function, and yes, the glitz and shiny baubles, then BUY APPLE! Or else commence hacking...

In addition, one easter egg has already been discovered - the game Breakout! is hidden within. MacAddict reports on it, as does MacityNet. Who knows what other goodies lurk within, or that Apple will release for it. I, for one, do not believe that an MP3 player is all that Apple has planned for it. We've had a few pleasant surprises since it's previewing, who knows what will happen once it's released to the general public. I, for one, want one VERY much.

According to a first look at the iPod, it's got a Breakout-style game included as an easter egg. No doubt the ROM is fully programmable, and I expect it to be only a couple of months before programmers have hacked the device to play other games as well, or (which would be very cool) read games from a special file on the hard disk.

This article about a presentation by Apple Italy shows that the iPod plays the classic "Breakout" game after holding a button for a few seconds (see the second page). Can it only be a matter of time before a plethora of simple apps run on this thing?
