Re:'Greatest and Luckiest of Mortals' indeedI do agree that Newton discovered/invented a large part of our mathematics but when people mention Newton they always seem to forget that he didn't really think up everything out of thin air.
The story about him and Robert Hooke is quite and interesting one and makes you think about how much he actually did do. Robert Hooke did infact accuse Newton of plagiarism but the charge was dropped because Hooke didn't have proof of his own theory and made some assumptions on intuitive grounds.
Makes one think that if someone would now proof Einsteins theory of relativity, if they would then discredit Einstein for the discovery.

Re:Record labels are still up to their old tricksThe formal FTC charges in 1959 regarding payola referenced unfair competition. In New York, they were trying to bring misdemeanour commercial bribery charges against DJs.
It seems like part of the problem was that the money was paid directly to DJs, rather than the company that employed the DJs, and was done in a way to not be explicit about the payments (eg. free vacations for DJs).
I think a modern-day analogy would be computer game reviewers getting free vacations from game companies and publishing glowing reviews without being forthright about the connection between them and the game distributor. I think this is one of the main reasons why newspapers, magazines, and such are so careful to delineate exactly what's written by their employees as independant commentators, and exactly what sections are ads written by the distributors themselves, and to not blur the line between the two. (eg. see the NPR linking policy brouhaha).
Though if something like this were codified into law, it would seem to prevent companies from placing "plants" in local bars who try to get people to think a particular product is cool or whatnot, in that they're trying to pass off paid direct-from-distributors marketing as independant recommendations.

Re:Cats are edibleIt's not about logic, it's all emotion. There's nothing wrong with eating cats, dogs, pigs, or cows, unless you grew up in a culture that arbitrarily empathizes with them as if they were sentient like humans.
Americans eat cow, Indian's worship them; Asians eat dog & cat, Americans love them; Redneck Americans eat Nutria (rats), some Indians worship rats.

We need an alternative
There's nothing particularly wrong with single-signon, just so as long it is done securely and the data of everyone on the planet isn't stored in one bank. Users are going to like the convience that Passport provides. Thus, we need a good alternative.
I found this, which discusses a way of doing a Passport-like identification over Jabber, dubbed "Jident". Maybe this, or something like it, could be implemented as a proper open-source/distributed counter to Passport.
Jabber is definitely what the world should be using instead of this new "Windows Messenger". Perhaps an alternative to Passport could be added/layered to it as well? Definitely check out that Jident page, especially the bottom where it lays out the pros and cons (and a neat scenario).
Maybe something like this will be discussed at JabberCon.

Jident
This is similar to the Jabber battle. "Windows Messenger" is going to be installed by default on 90% of the desktops out there in the near future. We need to win over users NOW, or everyone out there is going to get way too comfortable using the centralized Microsoft alternatives.
Btw, on topic, there was mention in the jabber.org forums of a Passport-like identification to layer that could be used over the already working decentralized Jabber network: Jident. This would be ideal IMO, and Jabber+Jident could be a perfect counter to Hailstorm+Passport. -
the 12th planet
21 - the 12th planet comes back and crashes into the Earth, turning it into another asterioid belt.
And if you believe that, I've got an umbrella for sale that will protect you from meteorites, guaranteed.
