Re:Obligatory LinksIMHO, the best video game music out there is Metroid Metal. Of course, it's all a matter of taste.
I downloaded all of OCRemix's archives through their BitTorrent link and sampled about 20 seconds of every one. I wound up keeping only about 200 total (and I'm still filtering down to about 150 of those). It's just worth noting to anyone who is getting interested in gaming remixes that there is a lot of crap out there. However, some of them are *really* good (see above link, "Kraid's Theme" rocks!).
Another good one is Project Majestic, although they sell their CDs rather than provide them for free.

Re:I've noticed
It's been around for a long time. There's a whole Internet subculture dedicated to remixing video game tracks (as well as at least one commercial effort), and a few composers (Nobuo Uematsu [Everything Final Fantasy that has a number other than XI after it] and Yasunori Mitsuda [Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Xenogears], namely) have achieved almost cult-like status. It's also customary in Japan to release soundtracks for video games on CD, as is done with movies in America and Europe.

Gaming Music On Demand (Kind Of)
I agree, it would be nicer to see additional channels to purchase this music through. Though at least my local comic shop carries a small selection (though mostly it's DDR).
One place I just discovered online is gamingfm.com, which streams videogame BGM 24/7. (though please, if you get addicted like I did, donate. I would hate to see them shutdown after getting /.'ed).
Also, I've noticed that sometimes it's cheaper to purchase the BGM from Ebay sellers overseas. However, I do support gamemusic.com and if you are a Square fan, the Project Majestic Mixes are a must have. Project Majestic HomePage
Now if someone could just crank out a decent remix of the M.U.L.E. theme, I would be in heaven.

Some things are worth waiting forfrom the it's-only-been-how-many-years dept.
The world's greatest browser took over four years to be made, and you're complaining? I bet you would have complained that Michelangelo couldn't finish a simple roof painting job overnight.
Some things are just worth waiting for. -
Re:Maybe I'm just missing it...
They're on their website here.
Just click the pictures of the 3 different versions, each has different songs to preview. 160kbit and about 30 seconds long each. -
More Arrangement Goodness
Be sure to also check out Project Majestic Mix, which is a arranged tribute album to Nobuo Uematsu of Final Fantasy fame. It features music from all the Final Fantasy games, plus Chrono Trigger and Front Mission: Gun Hazard. Very cool stuff. Project Majestic Mix
