Re:MariaDB CEO Accuses....
Interestingly, and relevant to the topic at hand, Microsoft explicitly announce they are Platinum Sponsors of the MariaDB Foundation, a claim backed by the foundation itself on their homepage. This is possibly part of why they're drubbing in AWS and not Azure -- Microsoft are simply contributing back (financially at least, maybe technically) to the project.
(And, yes, IBM are also listed as a sponsor to the MariaDB foundation, albeit Gold and not Platinum)
It also helps that Microsoft are a lot more up front about what is MariaDB - "Azure Database for MariaDB" is straight up a hosted MariaDB and Azure don't try to hide that (in fact, quite the opposite, they advertise that). (There's also PostgreSQL, MySQL and several SQL Server options). I take one look at "Amazon Aurora" and I would have assumed it was built from scratch!
I also wonder why the Amazon service is so much higher performance than just rolling your own on a VM - at a guess, it's lots of tweaking and/or spreading over many nodes or something.

Re:Not dealing with Oracle = big win
I rather like MySQL for certain projects, but unfortunately Oracle owns that now too.
MariaDB no good for you?
-
Re:Replace it with MySQL
Uh you mean MariaDB #FTFY

Hit em where they live, move to MariaDB
Of course stop using any part of Java that Oracle is claiming a copyright on. Heck I thought it was 9 lines of code, now it might be 37 APIs, come on now...enough already.
If this really pisses you off, especially if you are in a decision making position for IT in your company, seriously look at mariaDB and if possible switch out Oracle's SQL database for mariaDB. If you are considering Atlassian (JIRA, Confluence, Fisheye, Crucible, Bamboo) than use MariaDB instead. The first thing they did when they wrote MariaDB is get rid of all the things wrong with MySQL.
Many Linux distros have finally begun moving away from MySQL and to MariaDB for LAMP. Redhat recently started shipping their Enterprise version with MariaDB over MySQL
If you are the CEO of a company, did your VP of IT even consider the savings to the company that maridb would mean vs Oracle's SQL database solution? If not, perhaps its time to find a VP of IT that will put your company first.
Do you buy stock in companies? Do they use SQL databases? Do they use Oracle? Perhaps its not the best solution. Any company that does not control its cost effectively will take a hit one day, not a matter of if, only when.
Java is a PITA for overhead anyway, ask yourself, can I accomplish my goal without Java when developing applications...you might be surprised at how much faster and customer responsive your app is if you can 86 Java.
If its the entire API and not just 9 lines of code, everyone needs to re-evaluate their use of Java in development and especially in Cloud applications. No more Service As A Dis-service (SAAD vs SAAS)!
If you are reading this, you are a developer, time to think outside the Java / Oracle box!

Re:NoSQL is just a vague term
no idea, but I know Postgresql has had JSON columns for a while now, so you get the benefit of 'typeless' data storage (ie a blob of JSON data) and all the benefit of relational data if you want it (as its just another column).
MariaDB did it differently, merging Cassandra as a storage back-end, and "dynamic columns' so you can have different columns of data per row in a table. (and you can get all the dynamic column data out as a JSON blob).

Re:I'm sick of the whining. Software development =
Maybe this could give you a hint. Looks like a small factor, but is critical for validating whatever you want to do with the code. If is the start of a trend, better to be in a safe zone, i.e. elsewhere.

Maria DB
"MariaDB"? "Ishmael view" Jeebus, what's going on here? And now http://mariadb.org/ has been slashdotted^H^H^H DDoS'ed to death by the criminal organisation known as Slashdot!
Maybe we'll see some coverage in the TechEye Bible, wonderful proze!

Re:Me, too!
I haven't ever experienced problems with data not being available on MySQL either. Running several Drupal 6 & 7 sites on MySQL. Also, the company I work for hosts their main customer interface against on MySQL and they haven't had any problems in the several years it has been running either.
Is that an issue from 'ye olde' days? I love your posts, but from what I am reading here, it seems like some have problems with bugs in MySQL that aren't actually there anymore. Either that, or I have just been insanely lucky to not have experienced any of them? I'm running Debian stable with apt sources from (http://packages.dotdeb.org stable). So my MySQL version is 5.5.30-1~dotdeb.0.
I couldn't blame you in that regard though, once something leaves a sour taste in your mouth, it's hard to find reason to go back and try it again, I've done the same thing. Though this article is definitely inspiring me to have a look at both PostgreSQL and MariaDB. One gripe I had before (in drupal v6 about 2 years ago) was that PostgreSQL was purported to not support a 'distinct' select by the maintainer of the 'views' module (or possibly a random committer?). It made some of the configuration that I tried to do with views not work out correctly, so I ended up hacking the module code to add distinct support.
Drupal v7 now has a database abstraction layer though, so it now supports specialized queries based on whatever DB you choose to run it on. Drupal 8.. haven't tried it yet, but I looked at some of their DB code using PHP 5.4 traits, and it looks pretty slick. I'm was planning on putting together a new VM soon for testing out Drupal v8 on PHP 5.4, I'll definitely give PostgreSQL and MariaDB a shot.. though http://packages.debian.org/testing/database/ doesn't seem to have a package for MariaDB, looks like mariadb.org has its own repos: https://downloads.mariadb.org/mariadb/repositories/.
Should be fun!

Not One Link to the Actual Project Page
Seriously, how do you post an article about a software project, INTERVIEWING THE CREATOR, and not have one god damned link to the actual homepage or the software?
Why did I have to google that? Why were there 20+ irrelevant links in the opening paragraphs of the article? Why wasn't the actual website even mentioned until paragraph 7 of the second section? WHY didn't they even link it? Really? Gee, thanks, Rohan Pearce. Wouldn't want to enable my laziness, right?

Re:We've begun the move away from MySQL also
Note that those comparisons are with MySQL 5.5.
MySQL 5.6 is supposed to have performance improvements over 5.5 that should make it competitive with Percona Server, particularly on machines with many cores. Percona will also incorporate these changes.MariaDB is farther from mainline, and merging in the changes that are applicable to them will take longer.

Re:Thinly veiled stab at MySQL
I also figured that maybe there was some other up-and-coming database out there that I should take a look at. The
/. community is good at bringing alternatives like this to light.Did you take a look at MariaDB? It's a continuation/rework of MySQL by the guy who created MySQL...
-
MariaDB
You might want to take a look at MariaDB, it's a continuation of the MySQL project by the original author of MySQL.
-
Re:Orcale
You are so right. I meant of course MariaDB the fork of MySQL. I don't know why I wrote MaraDNS, maybe because they sound a-like. I'm sure one of the poster have corrected me already.
-
Re:Orcale
Aren't you mixing up with MariaDB? This looks more like a DNS implementation that a database.
-
Re:Google Apps
> Has no one forked MySql yet?
Yes. The original author. Michael "Monty" Widenius. He named his first database after his oldest daughter My, the new one after the second daughter Maria.
-
MariaDB and Percona
Oracle is not that big a of concern.
There is MariaDB which is data-compatible with MySQL, and has some nice additions (like microsecond performance data), and there is also Percona Server.
If Oracle messes up, like they did with OpenOffice, there will be another version that they cannot touch, like LibreOffice.

Re:MySQL tombstone: G.I.F.
And it has, see MariaDB. A complete drop in replacement with added features. Full disclosure: I work on the project.
-
Re:IMHO...
You mean, like MariaDB, as mentioned in the summary (hint: 3rd word) ?
-
MariaDB
MariaDB is a drop in replacement for MySQL which was forked a while ago: http://mariadb.org/
-
Fork You
If Oracle ownership of MySQL bothers you, then download MariaDB.
You don't have to use it right away if you don't want to, but it is a drop-in replacement for MySQL that you can substitute at any time.

Take a look at MariaDB and Drizzle.

Re:Oracle on shared web hosting
Shared hosts will switch to MariaDB when it is necessary to do so.

What about Maria DB?
http://mariadb.org/ - I watched a google tech talk on this. Looks quite good. Might be worth a look for those who would like to remain in familiar territory but not have to worry about Oracle.
-
2nd fork then?
Wasn't MariaDB enough?
-
Re:You have nothing to fear.
I'm not worried, MySQL is dead, long live MariaDB
-
MariaDB
It's doing just fine, thank you very much. http://mariadb.org/

Re:MS throws chairs, Oracle throws yachts
Isn't there already AmySql or TotsSql or something like that named after somebody's daughter
-
Re:Mysql as well?
Already done: http://mariadb.org/
Problem: The MySQL trademarks and support contracts cannot be forked as easily as code can.
