Replacing one greed with another changes little
I feel that the true promise of Open Source software is that it removes, or at least significantly weakens the ties between engineering-driven decisions and market-driven decisions. Rather than the incentive being market position or the acquisition of wealth, the incentive is a more useful product. Or at least that seems to be the ideal.
Placing greed for business success ahead of a drive for a quality product has led to such disasters as Microsoft and Intel. If greed for personal acclaim simply replaces greed for profit, we've changed little if in fact anything. Perhaps, ultimately, this problem is unsolvable; perhaps it's intrinsic to human nature. However that seems a little too pessimistic for my taste, so I prefer to remain an optimist that we can de-couple design from greed.

Sorry, bad link, this one will work better.

Oversubscription
graph available
I just have to tell you right now why the real reason for these caps are. It has nothing to do with "bandwidth" problems. They've oversubscribed their userbase. I have a graph up on my website detailing this. If you want the scripts to generate it yourself, contact me. What disgusts me the most is that I was paying $40 a month when the service was *good* during prime time. Now I'm still paying $40 a month, but the service is completely unusuable during prime-time. Please contact your PUC (Public Utilities Commissioner), as well as the technically-savvy press. This is an outrage - they're delivering less, but charging the same rate. In any other industry, this would be outright fraud.

Re:How about my TV!
Well I AM a physics Student and I I don't know why it is disturbing my TV but it is. And there is nothing I can do about it. And About the gas pipes, Ok there is some kind of danger to it but how are sparks (on time thing when connecting you know) gonna get inside the pipes. They are metal for a reason, that way they are automaticly grounded. Or something. But obviously no one knows how to get rid of the disturbtion (- well its wrong but then again it isn't my native lang.)

How about my TV!
When I have my TV and my box, which are about a meter apart, My cable reception is terrible. I tryed turning off the monitor and putting it in to suspend mode. (Two of the four fans go off) All this doesn't make a diffrence. I can't move it further away since I have a really small room. The Bios option about emf emission is truned off but this doesn't make a diffrence
Topless or not doesn't matter either. And no I don't have a cheap plastic case i have a heavy metal chassis. The main's aren't grounded so I thought that would be the problem. But again no it wasn't. I took a cable and connected it on a part on the topless chassis. I then hooked it up the the gas pipe used for the heater. So That is surley grounded.
The sparcs were pretty neat, when I connected the cable and forgot to turn it off.
I even hooked the coaxial cable shield from the TV to my "ground" No diffrence at all.
So if you got any help, suggestions, tips, hints or whatever...
And yes the Source is my box. And it doesn't matter what OS i am using.

If you're thinking I'm from mediaone - you're mistaken. They're my ISP, not my employer.
If there's a further explanation you find yourself in want of - e-mail me.

Re:MediaOne is da' bomb in Boston
I have also had nothing but great success with my Boston-area Mediaone Cable modem. I run a Quake 2 CTF Server off it 24/7, with little to no problems. Now if only I could get more upstream bandwidth...300Kbitps is good enough for most things, but it'd be nice to be able to run more than 12 people on my Quake server.

Geeks Anonymous?
"Matthew C," the final author in the column, wondered if there was some sort of organization out there to support those who will, if they live, grow up to be the next generation of Slashdotters.
I don't know that there is. There should be. If there isn't, WE should make one. An all-volunteer (Open Source? :) organization of been-there geeks, counselors, and others who can help these kids get thru the Hellmouth when no one else will.
And I'm going to go way the hell out on a limb and volunteer to coordinate the effort.
I need someone who can volunteer a co-located server and bandwidth, a webslinger, and some folks who know something about counseling. I'll handle the sysadmin end of it. (If someone wants to point me at an IRC server HOWTO, I'd appreciate it.)
If someone thinks they can do better, go for it; I just want to see this done. If somebody doesn't, we'll end up with all the smart ones selected out, and .... the rest is left as an exercise for the reader.
Talk to me, people.
