  1. GOG.com on What Modern Games Are DRM-Free? · · Score: 5, Informative

    Good Old Games has just entered beta. They are offering older games for $5.99 - $9.99, completely DRM free. They've got some great games in their catalog, including Fallout & Freespace.

    Being DRM Free is one of their major selling points.

    RTFA for your answer. Bill Kunkel mentions "Rescue on Fractalus" which is what you're describing.

    Have you guys checked out Metroid Metal yet? It's a great interpretation of the Metroid soundtrack. --JoeFaust

  5. Backwards Compatibility on Xbox for $99? Xbox 2 in 2005? · · Score: 4, Interesting

    I personally hope the XBox 2 is fully backwards compatible, including XBox Live functionality.

    I use my GBA and PS2 to play old games all the time. If the Gamecube let me, I'd be playing old N64 and Super Nintendo games, too.

  6. Re:BG on Neverwinter Nights Coming in June · · Score: 1

    Don't get your hopes up. Baldur's Gate (1/2) used the 2nd Edition D&D ruleset. NWN uses the 3rd Edution D&D ruleset.

    Conversion charts have been published, but they're not very good. The power curve has been greatly ramped up in 3rd Edition. Much better to just create new characters.

  7. Want fun? Try game programming! on Are There Any Fun Tech Jobs Left? · · Score: 1
    I came out of school and got a job coding Java for a Consulting company. They paid me a lot of money, but no amount of money was worth spending 9 of 12 months living in various hotels.

    So I sent my resume out to some local game companies, and the rest is history.

    I get to:
    • Write C++ & Java Client Code
    • Write C++ & Java Server Code
    • Play Dungeons and Dragons every Thursday night with friends at work
    • Stay late at work and play the latest games when they come out

    A lot of people seem to have the impression that getting a job in the Game industry is really really tough. For Engineers/Programmers, this is definitely not the case. Sure, at entry level the pay is typically not on par with "business coding", but for me at least, a smaller salary is a tiny price to pay for the blessing of a job that I love.

    If you're a coder, and you like games, and you'd like to work on games, send that resume out. You might surprise yourself.

    MP3.com Voluntarily Disables Major Label Content From My.MP3.com

    Dear My.MP3.com member,

    As you may already be aware, MP3.com has been engaged in an ongoing legal process with the five major record labels in regard to their recordings stored in My.MP3.com. While we have been working to settle these matters with the labels, MP3.com has voluntarily agreed to disable their content in the My.MP3.com database while negotiations continue apace. As a result, you will, at this time, be unable to access the major labels' content through your My.MP3.com account. We will continue our efforts to restore your music as soon as possible, and we hope that you will continue to enjoy the remainder of the My.MP3.com content, including all indie label content, the more than 350 albums in the Classical Music Channel and the 400,000-plus songs available to you for free on MP3.com.

  9. Breaking up is good to do on Congressman Advocates Breaking-Up a Guilty MS · · Score: 4

    I actually think that breaking up Microsoft would be a good thing. As much as I hate to admit it, Microsoft is here to stay. Linux isn't going to kill them anytime soon.

    That being said, I would like to see Microsoft produce some quality applications. They do have some. Visual J++ is my Java IDE of choice, and I'll take IE5 over Netscape any day.

    If the Operating Systems team was separated from the Application team, then maybe they'd stop trying to produce bastard hybrids and focus on one thing at a time. With some massive scope reduction, I think that all the talent at Microsoft could produce some killer apps.

    I have also had nothing but great success with my Boston-area Mediaone Cable modem. I run a Quake 2 CTF Server off it 24/7, with little to no problems. Now if only I could get more upstream bandwidth...300Kbitps is good enough for most things, but it'd be nice to be able to run more than 12 people on my Quake server.
