Re:Outside the US?
It took me about 5 minutes to find these guys: https://www.megaproxy.com/learn/free_vs_advanced/
If you're willing to pay (even a little bit) you have tons of apparently high quality options.

Why even get involved?
Where there are loads of free proxies already available.
Many will even pass through https traffic. Personally I use MegaProxy so the banks NetCop can't snoop, but even the free sites are feature rich these days.
I'd say just stay away unless your friend can offer up a better explanation. -
Re:DRM=WTF
My isp offers movie downloads for windows only and they block gnutella traffic. Instead of paying them 9.99/mo. to my isp, I'm considering paying the same amount for a megaproxy vpn solution http://www.megaproxy.com/secure/sslvpn/ so I can use the internet as intended.

GoDaddy WAS blaming Apple - the whole time!!
To everyone who says GoDaddy was not blaming Apple - listen up, your observations were simply wrong.
GoDaddy did not post that particular message on their website and blame a vendor (Cisco) until the evening AFTER this Slashdot story got posted (by me, I'm ZackMac). No Joke. This issue has been occuring since on or around November 25th, 2005. Took them long enough to even admit the problem.
For over two weeks GoDaddy has been doing NOTHING BUT BLAMING APPLE. If you read that Apple forum linked in the article you'll see that everytime anyone asked GoDaddy about resolving the problem, these are the type of response(s) given:

12/07/2005 10:26 AMHello Zack,
Thank you for your email. There has been no change with the way we do forwarding. The problem with Safari is related to how it (and Opera) handles 302 redirects. Your sites are currently forwarding correctly. You can verify this with https://proxysystems.net/ and https://www.megaproxy.com/freesurf. I apologize for your frustration, but as the problem is not on our end there is no further troubleshooting possible.
Please let us know if we can help you in any other way.

12/07/2005 09:05 AMDear Zack Brock,
Thank you for your reply. There are several issues that our beyond our control. One of which involves Safari. If that is not the problem you are experiencing, it must be an issue on the internet. The domain is functioning properly. We have noticed lately that some customers cannot view their domains though they function for us internally, on an external connection and via a proxy server. It seems that some ISPs are blocking the response back from our servers causing the forwarding to malfunction. Unfortunately, this is beyond our control. While we will work with these ISPs as we determine where the problem lies, we do not have control over when the resolution is achieved.
Please let us know if we can help you in any other way.

12/07/2005 08:02 AMDear Zack Brock,
Thank you for contacting customer support. Go Daddy has not made any changes in the way forwarding and masking sites are handled. The error you are referring to is a known issue of Safari, that you will need to contact Apple support to further resolve.
Please let us know if we can help you in any other way.

Dear Sir/Ma'am,
Thank you for contacting customer support. We have not changed in anyway our forwarding system. The forwarding issue with Safari is a known issue at this time. Unfortunately, this problem does not originate at GoDaddy but is most likely an issue with Safari. For more information regarding this, please contact Apple support. We apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing.
Please let us know if we can help you in any other way.

Re:Free wifi internet, free packets?
...Besides the problems with forcing the ads, how will they make sure the person sitting across the street can't read your email? That's a big issue, imo.
With public access wifi, capturing the airbourne packets is probably gonna be very easy. And no-one notices you, because your notebook will simply function as a 'radio'...
At public access points I always use a Proxy Server, and I always use one at work also - added bonus - I can look at any pages I'd like to and not worry about hitting something NSFW.
All the Admins would see (if they were snooping) is an encrypted SSL session between by browser and a remote web site.
I'm currently using MegaProxy, but a Google search reveals a large list of both pay and free services.

Re:Handy-dandy Google cache and Archive.org links
Oh come on, just use Megaproxy

Easy To CircumventWe're nerds, so why do we even care what policies they set? It is, after all, extremely easy to circumvent them and browse whatever the heck you want, safe in the knowledge that you're probably not being monitored (I know, keystroke loggers, etc..) I'm sure somebody here has already mentioned SSH tunnels, and us ultra-nerds have no problem setting them up. For the rest of the world (as well as those who don't leave their boxen on 24/7), there are free services like https://megaproxy.com which is, as the name suggests, an HTTPS-secured web proxy system.
You go to that page, type in which site you want to visit, and you're off to that site, and off the company's squid radar. At school, I use it every day to read forbidden bulletin boards that are blocked by the school's squid-based proxy.

Where are they getting all this money?
Apple has got more than 4 billion cash. There's where they're getting it.
