Hey, Marc! Can you say "obsession"? I knew you could!
Honestly, brother... I love Linux too (I administer Linux boxen), but isn't that perhaps a tad too much lovin'?

You people are kidding, right?
With 521 comments already, probably no one will ever read this but -- I have to say that in the 3+ years I've been reading Slashdot, this is the single most idiotic, clueless, divorced-from-reality discussion I have ever seen. I haven't been this embarassed to be part of the free software world since Eric Raymond marched on Microsoft dressed as Obi-Wan.

here's how you measure... and why not toAccording to this book that I'm currently reading, we just need a quantum computer to analyze what the outcome would have been if there was no MS in our world, by communicating (via spooky interaction) what's going-on in at least one of the realities where MS didn't exist.
ie: "costs to consumer" == opportunity costs (from our other world) - our world's percieved outcome.
Personally, i think you'd end up with a negative value... but that's not my reason for wanting to see this kind of test never performed...
Even if this were possible today, I'd say DON'T DO IT.
can you imagine, every company/individual being put to this test gee, according to our Quantum computer, if Bob would have been your kid's father, instead of you, Larry , they'd be XXX better off, ergo, you're a shitty dad and are orded to pay restition in the amount of XXXXX!
Seriously though, did some folks pay more? sure
Will it be too complex (due to the "indirect nature" of the end-users) for a single class action suit? yes
Should we tie up the court system for every party to get their $$ back? No.
A court ordered 'real version' of this attempt would be fine (with varying levels of refunditure based on your 'classification' c'mon, a little compartmentalization will do much to expedite!)

I can vouch for X/OSI don't know these guys from X/OS. They're probably just honest guys, but who know ?
X/OS is our neighbour in the building. Jos Vos (picture here) is very much respected around here. He has written firewall code such as ipfwadm. This is a very serious guy too: he blasted me a couple of weeks ago because I suggested we "congratulate" Microsoft Netherlands on their benchmark "victory" by offering them a cream cake. He thought it was juvenile, which of course is true, but hey, anything for a good laugh while we keep on coding!
On my turn, I am a bit weary of responding to these SCO claims, especially by citing IDC studies and Y2K reports.

On to the other parts of the article...
Linus is looking at 8, maybe 16 CPUs, but not 256 or 512 CPUs. After 16 CPUs or so, he prefers to look at clustering because a lot of hardware, especially PC hardware, wasn't designed for such scalability anyway.
Efficent clusters can make good use of multiple nodes with multiple CPUs. You won't necessarily need a 200 node system with each node having 200 processors (although that would be SWEET). You could just as easily have 200 nodes, each with 16 CPUs. You have to balance necessity with realism.
For now, he doesn't have a list of what he will allow in 2.4. At this point, performance and USB are the main focus and we'll see afterwards.
USB support would be good, but I'm still not sold on the principle of USB. As for performance, I'm not sure how much further it can go (although, I DO believe in Linus and the Linux Development team). 2.2.X achieved a TREMENDOUS performance leap over 2.0.3X. If we see another one of those jumps, I'd be thrilled.
While the penguin was announced as a 2.0 mascott at the beginning, there's no plans for a new mascott for linux 3.0
Why the fsck do we need a new mascot?!?!?
Just some thoughts, rants, etc.. :)
