Unless there's a good C# SQL wrapper that I don't know about
The Entity Framework in ADO.Net 3.0 combined with Language INtegrated query (Linq) C# language extensions is going to change how you write data based applications. Dispite my obvious bias this is one of the coolest things I've seen in quite a while.
Microsoft SQL Server Express is free to use and redistribute. It supports 1 CPU, 1 GB addressable RAM and 4 GB database size.
It's based on the core SQL Server 2005 Database Engine, including an advanced query optimizer and the new snapshot isolation level. It also supports the complete SQL Server programming model including T-SQL and CLR integration.

Did I mention that it's free to use and redistribute?
While night vision goggles are pretty cool; most suck when it comes to depth perception. So most likely you'll end up walking into things you think are far away.
I too miss those days. It's been over a year and a half since my last post to slashdot.
I remember when I didn't need to have a login. I remember when there was no first post. or Natalie Portman. or hot grits. or any of the other stuff we have today.
My humble impression: It kicks TIVO's ass. In fact it kicks TIVO, ReplayTV, Snapstream, Showshifter even ATI's guide+ right out of the water. It's user interface is nothing short of breathtaking, it's real slick.
It just makes sence to me to move my "digital library" (music, videos, pictures, movies) to my entertainment center!
How about $0 Baldric a student run beowulf at the University of Western Ontario built one on hardware dontations. It's not exactly top 500 but it still kicks ass.
Here's a question that's been bugging me for a while. What is the advantages of NAT in Linux and W2k for a home network? My friend who works at Microsoft want's to know what Linux NAT can do that W2k can't and I want to show him the light.. but I'm not that educated on the matter.
How important do you guys value Configuration Management Tools (tools that aid in the process of developing software)? I think they are very important to the development process. If you don't use them you're dead in the water.
The design, development, testing and deployment of software is a very iterative process. What kind of tools do you use that you have found to match this process and be very sucessfull?
I realize that these tools have to be easier to use and have more benifits to using them than not to use. But what would be an ideal situation for the development of "software that doesn't suck?"
I personally know at least two people who work for Microsoft and I know that they were told by Microsoft Legal that they are not to look at any Open Source software code. This is to prevent even the accidental use of some ideas from Open Source Software in any of the Microsoft products. The last thing that MS needs right now is another legal battle saying that they stole some GPL'd code. This would be a very dumb move to make on the MS side of things if you think about it.
Anyone else out there remember the "September Syndrome" when all the freshmen at college/university first got their accounts. They would test the waters and often would be quick to flame or troll. This would be quickly corrected by the existing community members and the freshmen would be put in their place. In about a month and things would calm down untill the next September. Well the net has been looking like September for the last couple of years now. Every day of every month, September. Oh well.:)
Seems the site is *really* bad right now, Might have something to do with the fact that they are serving all of their pictures through a cgi script ?. Oh well.
I made the switch from Altavista to Google right after it was announced on slash. It took a bit to pull me away from altavista.digital.com but for me it was that google returned good results with searches for Linux information. Good results are something that has been key to google's success, some may say that google is selling out by selling placement in their results but often that helps out a lot when you're looking for something.
For example I remember when a search for "Crappy Software" on google would return Microsoft and Netscape as the top two hits, now that's funny.
"Expected in the United States and Japan sometime in 2001"... and in Canada by 2047. Seriously.:)
From the article
"It includes position location, Bluetooth capability, MP3, MIDI" GPS, very cool, how many times have you been out with your friends, in a new area, and you are trying to find out where everyone is? Having a "Tell someone where you are" (exactly) type technology would be very cool. Bluetooth, very cool but: MIDI ??? God help us all if I'm in a eatery somewhere and someone's mobile device starts playing some crappy MIDI song..... oh wait a sec.... nevermind.
Well it looks as though the/. crew still has content control even though VA owns em, good for you!:)
I'm kinda conserned about this. A couple business partners and I are considering selling our software system solutions on a VA servers: We provide our custom software systems et al. and VA provides the hardware and support for the Boxes so we don't have to run around fixing broken ethernet cards... just our software:)
But I am still considering VA for this choice. I've met Jason and Zack from VA Canada and from what I gather Zack's job is to, "Make sure our boxes work for our customers". (sorry If I got that wrong Zack). Now with a job description like that I've got to wonder if this is an exception to what's actually going on over at VA.
Any other VA customers out there like to comment??
Now I havn't done a lot of homework but don't VA boxes come Redhat with VA Enhancements pre-installed on them. Then the obvious question here is why would you yank out something that the VA developers have slaved over to make run very well on very good hardware and put in Mandrake on them... there servers right, why not just "enhance" what's allready on them to suit your purposes???

Right from the article it's called "Windows XP Media Center.".
I have had the privelage of seeing and using Windows XP Media Center edition live, up close and personal.

Suppose someone writes some nice perl script. Are the millions going to use it? No.

Some yes. Millions no.
Is this going to change my reading habits? Probably Not.
